Moonveil Academy: Trapped With The Five Kings
Chapter 111: Complicated Feelings
Elara:
His mouth pressed hot against mine, and for one suspended moment, neither of us seemed to remember how to breathe. The hesitation that had lingered between us only seconds ago disappeared beneath the hunger of the kiss, drawing an answering need from somewhere deep inside me that I hadn’t known was there.
My fingers curled tighter around the front of his jacket, instinctively pulling him closer instead of pushing him away, and Kairo responded immediately, sliding one arm around my waist and drawing me against him. His other hand returned to my cheek, his thumb grazing slowly over my cheekbone, and somehow that gentle touch was almost more dizzying than the kiss itself.
I could feel the warmth of his body through our clothes, could taste him on my lips, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I wasn’t thinking about the people hunting me, the secrets surrounding my identity, the academy, or the men who had somehow turned my life upside down. I was simply there, caught in the moment, caught in him.
What the hell was I doing? The thought flickered somewhere at the edge of my mind, but it was too distant to make me stop.
After days of staying constantly on guard, of measuring every word and watching every person around me for the slightest hint of betrayal, the sensation of letting my guard down - even for something as simple as a kiss - was intoxicating.
It was just kissing. It couldn’t hurt anything, could it?
Kairo hadn’t hurt me. Not really. He had teased me, annoyed me, invaded my personal space more times than I cared to count, but beneath all of that, he had also helped me when I needed it. He had patiently taught me illusion magic when I couldn’t even control my own power, helped me with the dorm lock spell, and somehow managed to make me laugh when I hadn’t thought I had anything left to laugh about. Maybe that was why this felt so dangerously easy. Maybe that was why, when he tipped his head and kissed me again, I didn’t pull away.
Instead, I welcomed him.
The kiss deepened, and my hand slipped higher against his jacket as his arm tightened around my waist. His fingers traced a slow path along my jaw and down the side of my neck, sending a shiver through me that had nothing to do with the cool library air.
I shifted closer without thinking, my knuckles brushing the warm skin at the edge of his shirt, and the quiet sound he made against my lips sent another unfamiliar rush through me.
For one reckless second, I forgot every reason I had to be careful. I forgot that Kairo was Reign’s friend. I forgot that I had spent weeks insisting that none of these men would ever have control over me. I forgot that every relationship in this place seemed to come with consequences I couldn’t yet understand.
All I could feel was him.
Then his hand moved lower, and the innocent excuse I had been giving myself shattered.
The warmth of his palm against my side sent a sharp spark through me, and I suddenly became painfully aware of how close we were, how easily this could become something neither of us had intended when we had sat down in the library. My breath caught, and the realization hit me with enough force to cut through the haze in my head.
This wasn’t just kissing anymore.
My heart began pounding for an entirely different reason.
I pulled away and the sudden loss of his warmth left me almost as breathless as the kiss had. I scrambled to my feet, clutching my bag against myself as though it could somehow shield me from what had just happened. My entire body felt feverish, my lips tingling and raw, while the cool air of the library rushed against them.
Kairo remained seated for a moment, staring up at me, his gray eyes darkened with the same desire that was still twisting through my stomach. His chest rose and fell beneath his shirt as he tried to steady his breathing, and when he finally said my name, his voice came out rougher than I had ever heard it.
"Elara..."
I shook my head quickly, because I knew that tone was dangerous. If he said anything that made me stay, if he came any closer, I wasn’t entirely sure I would have the strength to leave again.
"I think-I think I should go now," I managed, my voice barely steadier than his.
I grabbed my bag and shoved the books and the laptop almost carelessly. Zipping it, I turned to the direction of the staircases leading downstairs.
"Elara..." Kairo spoke again, his voice filled with an emotion that almost halted me in my steps. "I’m sorry. I really am-"
I didn’t look back. I couldn’t. Because some reckless part of me was already tempted to turn around, return to him, and pretend there was nothing complicated about what had just happened.
But there was.
There was Reign. There was his identity as the Greymark heir. There was everything I still didn’t know about him and his true intentions toward me.
There was the fact that I had spent weeks fighting to keep control of my own life, and tonight, for a few breathless minutes, I had willingly handed a tiny piece of that control to Kairo.
And perhaps the most frightening part wasn’t that I regretted kissing him.
It was that I didn’t.
Despite all the rules I established for myself after what happened with Lorien, I actually made that mistake today.
And worst of all - how was I supposed to pretend that Kairo was the only man I felt attracted to? How could I continue that kiss when he’s just one of the five men who had taken over my dreams and thoughts?
Wouldn’t I be wrong to do that? Or was I just complicating a simple kiss way too much?
