Chapter 207: Chapter 206: Found a Clue
Before Gu Qingyin could speak, and before Huo Xingchen and Chad turned around, Huo Yunjing grabbed her by the waist and spun her around.
Instantly, Gu Qingyin’s face flushed red, and she shot back defensively, "We’re in public, can’t you control yourself?!"
Huo Yunjing sighed. "I was controlling myself just fine."
Gu Qingyin fell silent. That position just now, especially on horseback, had indeed been a little too stimulating.
But she swore to herself, ’I really wasn’t thinking about anything else at the time! I just felt more secure holding on up top and wrapping my legs around him!’
After a moment, the two who had ridden off turned their horses around and came back.
Huo Xingchen looked at his mom and asked with concern, "Is it too sunny? Mom, your face is really red."
Gu Qingyin’s heart skipped a beat, and her face grew even redder. "Haha, it is a little sunny. If you have something to say, say it quickly. I want to head back and get some ice cream when we’re done."
Chad tilted his head back to look at the sun, which wasn’t particularly dazzling, and wondered, ’Could it be that women’s skin is just more delicate?’ He glanced again at Gu Qingyin’s fair skin and became more certain of his theory.
"Last night, I managed to contact my people." Anger flared in Chad’s eyes. "That hypocrite, Amos, used my absence to cook up some excuse and had all my men sent to Africa! That bastard!"
That... was a difficult situation to comment on.
Amos’s logic was really something else.
In most power struggles, people would be ruthlessly eliminated. He, on the other hand, sent them to some godforsaken place to work in the mines. For a moment, it was hard to tell which approach was more malicious.
"What are you planning to do?" Gu Qingyin asked.
"I’ve arranged for a few of my men to return, but any more would be noticed," Chad said. "I have limited people I can use, so the key will be relying on you."
Gu Qingyin nodded. "The priority now is to find the person who worked with Amos—the real culprit who erased your memory and sent you abroad to find Huo Xingye."
Chad’s expression turned grim at her words. "Exactly! If it weren’t for that person, I wouldn’t have been stuck abroad for so long, giving Amos the opening he needed."
"Who’s in charge of the Rote Family right now?"
"My father is," Chad said, taking a deep breath. "He has always favored Amos and isn’t very pleased with me."
’Isn’t that rather wise of him?’ Gu Qingyin thought. Outwardly, however, she asked with a straight face, "What would happen if your father found out what Amos did?"
Chad’s eyes lit up. "My father despises this kind of insidious scheming. He would definitely reconsider his choice of heir." He took a few deep breaths, forcing himself to calm down. "But we still have to find evidence first. Otherwise, my father won’t believe it."
Gu Qingyin nodded in agreement. "Exactly. We need to investigate Amos and everyone around him—who he’s met in the last six months, who he’s spoken with on the phone, and so on. We have to check every single detail, no matter how small."
"Alright, I’ll handle it myself."
For the next few days, the family of three acted just like tourists, exploring and enjoying every part of the estate.
They never left the estate, simply wandering around right under Amos’s nose. Their main purpose was to act as a diversion, drawing the enemy’s attention to make it easier for Chad to move undetected.
Amos couldn’t very well act against them on his own turf. He was even afraid of something happening to them—if word got out, what would become of the Rote Family’s reputation?
That evening, Gu Qingyin sighed at the table laden with Western food and asked a nearby housemaid, "Do you have any Chinese chefs here?"
The housemaid smiled. "Madam, the estate’s chefs come from all over the world. Of course we have a Chinese chef."
It wasn’t just Gu Qingyin; Huo Yunjing and Huo Xingchen also looked over, puzzled.
"Then how come we haven’t had a single Chinese meal this whole time?"
For a moment, Gu Qingyin’s mind raced with conspiracy theories. ’Maybe Amos wants us to eat poorly so we can’t sleep well, trying to wear us down. Or maybe he’s just doing it to mess with us...’
To her surprise, the housemaid blinked in confusion, then said apologetically, "Did you want to have Chinese food? I’m so sorry, I assumed you would prefer to try the local specialties."
She quickly moved to clear the table. "I’ll go notify the kitchen right now and have them prepare new dishes for you."
"That’s not necessary! Don’t go to the trouble for this meal. We can just change it for the next one."
Gu Qingyin felt a rare pang of guilt. She had been uncharitable. The staff was only trying to be good hosts; what had they done wrong? If anyone was at fault, it was her for not being clear about her preferences.
"I’m sorry," Gu Qingyin tried to explain. "I’m a bit traditional and prefer the flavors of home. The local cuisine is lovely, but I start to miss Chinese food if I go too long without it. You know what I mean?"
The housemaid immediately gave an understanding smile. "Yes, I understand completely. It was my oversight."
"It’s not your fault at all!" Gu Qingyin said quickly. "Please don’t blame yourself, or my conscience will bother me."
The housemaid immediately assured her she wasn’t blaming herself.
Gu Qingyin breathed a sigh of relief. ’I almost wrongly accused an innocent person,’ she thought. ’Just because Amos is a bad guy doesn’t mean all his staff are. I shouldn’t be so prejudiced.’
Gu Qingyin took a bite of beef and muttered, "My apologies, my apologies."
Huo Yunjing chuckled, picking out some things he thought she would eat and putting them in a bowl for her. "Finish this."
Huo Xingchen also chimed in. "The beef is actually really good, and the sauce makes it taste unique. You should give it a proper try, Mom."
Gu Qingyin flushed. "I know, I know. Just eat your own food and don’t worry about me."
’Being coaxed to eat by her own son...’
She picked up a mouthful of food with her chopsticks and put it in her mouth, regardless of whether it tasted good. She had to set a good example; she couldn’t be the one leading the picky eating.
That evening, Gu Qingyin got her wish and had Chinese food. The flavors were so authentic that she was incredibly moved and even asked to meet the chef.
The chef’s hometown was in the Northeast, and he cooked Northeastern cuisine best, followed by Sichuan and then Cantonese. Unfortunately, most foreigners couldn’t handle much spice, so he rarely had the opportunity to cook Sichuan dishes.
When Gu Qingyin heard this, she was thrilled—what a coincidence, she loved spicy food!
The two of them hit it off instantly, feeling like they should have met ages ago, and immediately planned the menu for the next three days.
Good things came in pairs. That very same night, Chad finally made some progress.
A month before Chad left for Huaxia, Amos met a long-haired Chinese man at a Chinese restaurant.
Gu Qingyin’s expression immediately turned serious. She pulled up a realistic portrait on her phone and held it out to him. "Was it him?"
Chad wasn’t good at distinguishing Asian features and had some degree of face blindness.
He held the phone, comparing the portrait to the surveillance image for a full five minutes before finally nodding. "That’s him!"
Gu Qingyin let out a cold laugh. "Xian Yu Fei!" ’And here I was, worried I couldn’t find him. How dare he conspire with foreign powers against the Huo Family!’
’This time, I’ll settle all our scores, new and old!’
Gu Qingyin was filled with confidence. If Xian Yu Fei dared to show his face, he wasn’t getting out of this alive.
