Chapter 182: Chapter 181: But Don’t Remember for Too Long
Tears streamed down Yuan Shuyi’s face. "We were just trying to do what was best for you."
Song Qiweng instinctively recoiled at her words. "After I lost my memory, you deliberately hid someone’s existence from me. Doesn’t that mean this person had a huge influence on my life?"
His thin lips pressed into a firm line. "In other words, this person is very important to me. If you were really doing what was best for me, how could you have the heart to make me forget someone so important?"
Yuan Shuyi kept shaking her head, finally breaking down and shouting through her sobs, "You would have died if you didn’t forget her!"
"Did you really think that was an accident? It wasn’t! You didn’t want to live anymore! You tried to kill yourself to be with her!" Yuan Shuyi’s eyes were filled with pain. "You drove your car into the ocean in the middle of the night! If some fishermen hadn’t found you, you’d be dead!"
Song Qiweng stared at her, stunned, unable to process what she had just said.
’He... tried to die for Su Yi?’
Su Yi was stunned for a moment, too, but then her expression softened. As a ghost, she nestled meekly against Song Qiweng, the picture of dependence.
Gu Qingyin couldn’t help but let out a mental ’oho,’ and felt compelled to remind him, "Su Yi must be your girlfriend."
Song Qiweng flinched. He stared hard at Yuan Shuyi, his voice tight. "Is that right? When I woke up, you all told me we were childhood sweethearts, that we were about to be married."
"So... that was a lie, too?"
Yuan Shuyi couldn’t meet his gaze. She turned her head, wiping away tears as she spoke. "The part about us being childhood friends is true, but... you never liked me that way. We were never together."
Song Qiweng’s eyes reddened, his voice trembling. "The woman I loved more than life itself died, and you... you took advantage of my amnesia to rip her from my life."
As if he couldn’t bear it, he took a ragged breath and asked through clenched teeth, "What gave you the right?"
Yuan Shuyi stood up to face him, shouting, "Because we love you! We couldn’t stand to lose you!"
Song Qiweng ignored her and turned to Gu Qingyin. "Is Su Yi here? I want to see her."
Panic flashed across Yuan Shuyi’s face as she frantically tried to stop him. "No! She’s already dead! She should be in the Underworld, waiting for reincarnation! She shouldn’t be here!"
Gu Qingyin shrugged. "Why don’t you two sort out your opinions first?" She then looked at Yuan Shuyi. "Pardon me, but I have another question."
"Your goal was to hide Su Yi’s existence. So, what purpose did you pretending to be Song Qiweng’s girlfriend serve?"
Song Qiweng looked at her too, his gaze turning speculative.
Yuan Shuyi opened her mouth but found she had no good explanation. She could only stammer, "It was... a misunderstanding..."
When Song Qiweng was semi-conscious, he kept calling out Su Yi’s name, but he had amnesia by the time he fully regained consciousness.
When Yuan Shuyi visited him in the hospital, his mother called out her name—"Shuyi." Song Qiweng overheard and misunderstood, assuming Yuan Shuyi was his girlfriend.
At first, Yuan Shuyi had wanted to explain, but Aunt Song begged her to help, to at least give Song Qiweng a reason to hope again.
Yuan Shuyi agreed.
How could she refuse? This was the boy she’d had a crush on since she was little. She had even gone abroad for her studies just to escape the fact that Song Qiweng had a girlfriend.
In the beginning, Yuan Shuyi genuinely just wanted to help. But the more time they spent together, the greedier she became.
Song Qiweng was so gentle, so considerate. No one could say no to such a perfect boyfriend.
Especially not Yuan Shuyi, who had secretly loved him since they were young.
She wanted to make the pretense a reality.
When Aunt Song found out, she was vehemently against it—not for her son’s sake, but for Yuan Shuyi, the girl she had watched grow up.
Song Qiweng’s amnesia wasn’t permanent. Sooner or later, he would remember everything.
When that day came, how would Song Qiweng react? And how would Yuan Shuyi be able to face him?
But Yuan Shuyi refused to give up. She decided to take a gamble.
She wanted to use his amnesia as an opportunity to replace Su Yi in his heart.
His memories with Su Yi might have been unforgettable, but the sweet, tender moments she and Song Qiweng had shared weren’t fake, either.
Song Qiweng had always been a smart man. Yuan Shuyi was confident he would know how to choose.
Before all the strange things started happening, Yuan Shuyi had been completely confident.
"Actually, the first time Qiweng got trapped in that tunnel, I guessed she was back." Yuan Shuyi gave a bitter smile. "I just... I didn’t dare confirm it. I didn’t want to."
"Ridiculous. This is absolutely ridiculous!" Song Qiweng shook his head, his eyes bloodshot. "How could something like this happen to me?"
Gu Qingyin nodded in agreement. ’Tell me about it,’ she thought. ’Isn’t this straight out of a novel? The only difference is that Su Yi didn’t go abroad—she died.’
Song Qiweng pleaded again, "Master Gu, please let me see her."
Gu Qingyin hesitated. "You’ve completely forgotten her. What would you even say? I think it’s better if you don’t."
Song Qiweng shook his head. "No. I want to see her. I don’t want to have regrets later when my memories come back."
Gu Qingyin didn’t press the issue. Instead, she looked toward Su Yi. "Do you agree?"
Song Qiweng grew visibly tense.
Yuan Shuyi smiled bitterly. Her six months of constant companionship, day and night, had all been a joke in the end.
But she had fought for it. She didn’t regret it.
Of course, Su Yi wanted to speak with him face-to-face, too. But she didn’t look good right now; she was afraid she would scare him.
Song Qiweng might have seemed gentle, dependable, and mature, but he wasn’t actually very brave. He was afraid of heights and the dark.
Su Yi touched her face and asked anxiously, "Master, do you have any makeup that ghosts can use?"
A question mark slowly materialized over Gu Qingyin’s head.
’You’ve got to be kidding me, girl!’
In the end, Gu Qingyin rummaged through her satchel, pulled out a blush compact, and burned it for Su Yi on the spot. She considered it payment for the story.
Su Yi was grateful. She took the blush, dabbed some on her cheeks, and even added a bit of color to her ashen lips.
Gu Qingyin opened Song Qiweng’s Yin Yang Eye.
Song Qiweng slowly opened his eyes and saw Su Yi standing before him in a white dress.
He froze. It was like fireworks exploding in his head as flashes of memories, both familiar and strange, surged through his mind. In every single one, he saw the girl before him.
Song Qiweng’s vision blurred with tears. He was so choked with emotion he couldn’t speak, so he instinctively raised his arms to embrace her.
A small smile touched Su Yi’s lips as she took a step back. She was afraid it would only sadden him more to discover he couldn’t hold her.
Song Qiweng’s arms froze mid-air for a second. He quickly pulled them back, roughly wiping away his tears. He took several deep breaths to compose himself, and only after a long moment did he finally speak.
"Yiyi..." Song Qiweng was caught between laughter and tears. "I’m sorry. I remember now. I’m so sorry."
Su Yi’s gaze was gentle. She watched him, quiet and focused, as if trying to carve his face into her very soul.
"Qiweng, live a good life. Don’t forget me... but don’t remember me for too long, either."
As her words faded, Su Yi’s spirit began to grow faint.
Song Qiweng panicked, reaching out for her, but his hand closed on empty air. "Yiyi!"
Gu Qingyin shook her head. "Her attachment has faded. She’s gone to be reincarnated."
Song Qiweng stared at the empty space where she had been, tears streaming silently down his face.
