Misunderstood Hero: My Family Are All Villains

Chapter 166: The Sultan They Knew

  • Next Chapter

Malik stood off to the side, watching the crew unload the battered ship.

Crates came down the gangplank one after another, sailors moving with the particular urgency of people who’d just survived something they didn’t fully understand and desperately wanted to put behind them.

Nobody looked at him directly.

Not with suspicion, exactly. More like the careful avoidance people gave something they respected and didn’t want to accidentally provoke.

The captain stood beside him.

She hadn’t said much since the attack. Just quiet orders to her crew, the occasional glance in his direction that Malik hadn’t bothered to acknowledge until now.

He looked at her.

She was already looking at him.

Malik smiled.

She smiled back.

It lasted longer than either of their first glances had.

A few seconds, maybe more, neither of them saying a word, both of them understanding something had passed between them that didn’t need language to be real.

Then, reluctantly, she turned and walked away, back towards her crew, back towards the business of getting her ship and her cargo properly settled on dry land.

Malik watched her go.

He didn’t follow.

There wasn’t anything more to say.

She didn’t know who he was, and he wasn’t going to tell her.

But she’d seen enough, understood enough without needing the details, and that quiet acknowledgment felt like a fitting enough goodbye.

He turned and walked the other direction, down towards the edge of the docks where the crowd thinned out.

Once he was alone, Malik opened his system.

Malik stared at the jump in Fear Points for a long moment.

182 to 14,602.

That was the kind of number that came from killing things that mattered, things with weight behind their deaths.

Whatever that massive, stitched-together horror had actually been worth in the grand scheme of Corruption’s ledger, it had apparently been worth a lot.

He sighed slowly.

Another milestone reached meant things were about to get wilder. They always did. That was just how this worked now.

Progress came, and with it, bigger threats circling closer, more attention from things that wanted him dead in increasingly creative ways.

’At least I am still alive.’

Small comforts, again.

He was about to close the system and figure out his next move when he noticed something strange happening at the edge of the dock.

A grave.

It hadn’t been there a moment ago.

Now it simply existed, sitting undisturbed among the crates and coiled ropes like it had always belonged there, stone weathered in a way that suggested years rather than seconds.

From it rose a girl.

Black hair, framing a face pale as moonlight. Purple eyes, striking even from a distance. Small in stature, delicate in the way that made people underestimate her, though Malik knew better than most how wrong that instinct was.

Dunya.

She looked at him for a long moment, saying nothing, needing to say nothing.

Then she slowly walked towards him and wrapped her arms around him in a hug that carried more weight than words ever could have.

Malik hugged her back.

She gripped him hard, fingers digging into the fabric of his shirt, holding on like she was afraid he might vanish again if she let go too soon. He didn’t mind. He let her hold on for as long as she needed.

Though the girl couldn’t speak, not with her voice, he heard her anyway.

He always had, somehow, in the way that mattered.

You came back.

’I always do.’

He thought back, not sure if she could actually hear him the way he heard her, but hoping regardless.

After a while, she finally let go.

She pointed at the grave.

Malik nodded, understanding without needing an explanation, and let her take his hand, pulling him gently along.

He didn’t know exactly where she was taking him. But he had an idea.

Before they reached wherever the grave led, Malik raised his free hand and activated his Stranger’s Ring, feeding Rukh back into his body, letting it reshape him, pull the years back out of his face, straighten his spine, return the strength to muscles that had been wearing an old man’s disguise for longer than he cared to admit.

The beard remained.

He kept that. Liked it, honestly.

But the rest of him shifted back into focus, into the face and frame that people across Devil’s Maw would recognize in an instant.

He was the Sultan they knew.
