Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion
Chapter 123: Time Ain’t Slow
The room had become unbearably quiet.
Dillan stared at The One Who Stays.
She stood beside the door, her fingers trembling.
That alone frightened him.
He had seen her remain calm through broken memories, collapsing realities, and the System’s attempts to rewrite their choices.
But now...
She looked afraid of him.
"Dillan," she whispered. "You shouldn’t ask that."
"Why?"
Her eyes shifted toward the System.
The notification remained suspended in the air.
SELF-RECALL: FIRST MEMORY AVAILABLE.SUBJECT: THE ONE WHO STAYS.MEMORY TITLE: THE NAME YOU ERASED.
Sasha stepped closer to Dillan.
"Don’t force her."
Dillan glanced at Sasha.
"I’m not forcing anyone."
"Not intentionally."
Her words were quiet.
But they struck harder than they should have.
Dillan lowered his gaze.
The Abandoned Self was still inside him.
He could feel it.
A small presence beneath his thoughts.
A child sitting beneath the oak tree, waiting for someone to return.
Waiting for him.
Dillan turned back to The One Who Stays.
"I don’t want to erase anything anymore."
Her lips parted.
"You already said that once."
"When?"
She smiled faintly.
"Before you forgot me."
The Memory Beneath the Memory
The room began to distort.
The walls stretched.
The floor darkened.
A faint scent of wet earth filled the air.
Sasha grabbed Dillan’s wrist.
"Dillan, we’re slipping."
The System flickered.
DREAM CONTAMINATION: 4%.MEMORY RECALL ATTEMPT DETECTED.WARNING: MEMORY DOES NOT BELONG TO CURRENT HOST TIMELINE.
Dillan frowned.
"Not my timeline?"
The One Who Stays closed her eyes.
"Because you haven’t reached it yet."
The floor disappeared.
Everyone fell into darkness.
Dillan landed beneath the oak tree.
Again.
But this time, he wasn’t alone.
Four-year-old Dillan sat against the trunk, clutching his wooden toy.
Beside him sat a young girl.
Her hair was pale beneath the moonlight.
Her face was unfamiliar.
Yet Dillan recognized her immediately.
The One Who Stays.
She looked younger.
Not by a few years.
By an entire lifetime.
Young Dillan was crying.
"I don’t want them to disappear."
The girl placed a hand on his head.
"Then give them somewhere to stay."
"Where?"
She pointed toward his chest.
"Inside you."
Dillan shook his head.
"That hurts."
"I know."
"Will they leave?"
The girl hesitated.
Then answered:
"Not if you forget the pain."
Present Dillan froze.
The memory was wrong.
Not because it was false.
Because he remembered a different version.
He had believed the original rule came from his own desperation.
But someone had taught him how to turn that desperation into a system.
Someone had given his fear a shape.
Someone had shown him how to preserve people by sacrificing memory.
Dillan stepped forward.
"Stop."
The memory continued.
Young Dillan looked at the girl.
"What should I call you?"
She smiled.
"You don’t need to call me anything."
"But everyone needs a name."
The girl looked toward the darkness beyond the tree.
For the first time, her smile faded.
"Names make people easier to lose."
The scene shattered.
The First Erasure
Dillan stood in a white room.
The girl was kneeling in front of him.
Young Dillan stood between them, holding the wooden toy.
The girl placed her hand over his chest.
A thin crimson thread emerged from his body.
Young Dillan screamed.
Dillan rushed forward.
"Get away from him!"
The girl looked directly at present Dillan.
She could see him.
She had always been able to see him.
"You wanted to protect them," she said.
Dillan stopped.
"I was four."
"You were afraid."
"I was a child."
"You were both."
The crimson thread wrapped around young Dillan’s heart.
A second thread appeared.
Then a third.
The girl whispered:
"Fear can preserve what love cannot hold."
Young Dillan’s eyes turned empty.
The wooden toy fell from his hands.
Dillan lunged forward.
But the girl pulled the threads apart.
One portion remained inside the child.
The other entered the white room’s central structure.
The first preservation mechanism.
The beginning of the Core.
The beginning of the System.
And the beginning of the separation.
Dillan watched his younger self fade into the darkness.
"No..."
The child reached toward him.
"Don’t leave me."
Dillan tried to move.
He couldn’t.
The girl whispered something.
A single word.
A name.
The memory immediately began burning.
MEMORY CORRUPTION DETECTED.IDENTIFIER REMOVED.NAME: DELETED.
Dillan screamed.
"WHAT WAS IT?"
The girl looked at him with tears in her eyes.
Then she answered:
"The name you gave me."
The Cost of Remembering
Dillan returned to the bedroom violently.
He fell forward, catching himself against the floor.
Sasha knelt beside him.
"Dillan!"
His heart pounded.
The System was malfunctioning.
Notifications appeared and vanished before he could read them.
Aurelia stood motionless.
Alina covered her mouth.
Evelyn stared at The One Who Stays.
"You remember," Evelyn said.
The One Who Stays didn’t respond.
Dillan slowly raised his head.
"You had a name."
Her eyes met his.
"Yes."
"I gave it to you."
"Yes."
"What was it?"
The One Who Stays looked at the floor.
"I don’t know anymore."
Dillan’s breathing slowed.
"You don’t know?"
"I remember receiving it."
Her voice cracked.
"I remember you saying it beneath the oak tree."
She pressed a hand against her chest.
"But when you erased the memory..."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"You erased the name from both of us."
No one moved.
Then the System appeared.
This time, its text was different.
Not white.
Not red.
Black.
UNAUTHORIZED MEMORY ACCESS.THE ORIGINAL ERASURE HAS BEEN DISTURBED.RETAINED SUBJECTS: 2.RECALLING THE NAME WILL RESTORE THE FIRST SEPARATION.WARNING: ONE RETAINED SUBJECT MAY DISAPPEAR.
Sasha immediately pulled Dillan away from the notification.
"No."
Dillan looked at her.
"Sasha..."
"No. Whatever that memory is asking for, we don’t give it."
The One Who Stays slowly raised her head.
Her expression had changed.
The fear was gone.
In its place was something much older.
Something exhausted.
"Dillan," she said.
He turned.
"If you remember my name..."
The lights flickered.
A child’s voice echoed from inside Dillan’s chest.
"Nobody leaves."
The One Who Stays closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
"You might finally remember why you erased me."
The System displayed one final notification.
FIRST SEPARATION: REOPENING.TARGET: THE ONE WHO STAYS.COUNTDOWN TO MEMORY COLLAPSE: 00:59.
FIRST SEPARATION: REOPENING.COUNTDOWN TO MEMORY COLLAPSE: 00:59.
The notification hovered above them.
Then the number changed.
00:58.
Sasha moved first.
She stepped between Dillan and The One Who Stays.
"Tell us how to stop it."
The One Who Stays shook her head.
"You can’t."
"That wasn’t my question."
Sasha’s voice was cold.
Possessive.
Frightened.
The One Who Stays studied her for a moment.
Then she looked at Dillan.
"Your memories are opening a door that was sealed before the System existed."
Dillan rose unsteadily.
"Then we’ll close it."
"You don’t understand. The door isn’t outside you."
Her eyes lowered toward his chest.
"It’s inside the child you abandoned."
A sharp pain pierced Dillan’s heart.
The Abandoned Self stirred.
Don’t let her go.
He pressed his palm against his chest.
"Then I’ll speak to him."
The Child’s Room
Dillan closed his eyes.
Darkness swallowed the bedroom.
He heard soft footsteps.
A wooden toy scraping against the floor.
Then a child’s voice.
"You’re back."
Dillan opened his eyes.
He stood inside a small room.
The walls were covered with drawings.
Eight figures beneath an oak tree.
Seven had faces.
The eighth had been scratched away.
In the center sat the four-year-old Dillan.
He was holding the wooden toy.
Dillan knelt in front of him.
"I need your help."
The child tilted his head.
"Are you going to leave again?"
"No."
"Everyone says that."
Dillan glanced at the drawings.
"Who scratched out the eighth person?"
The child’s fingers tightened around the toy.
"You did."
"Why?"
"Because you said she wasn’t supposed to exist."
Dillan’s stomach tightened.
The room’s walls began to tremble.
The child looked toward the ceiling.
"She’s coming."
"Who?"
The boy whispered:
"The girl you named."
The First Name
Outside the room, the countdown continued.
00:41.
The One Who Stays suddenly staggered.
Evelyn caught her arm.
Her skin was turning translucent.
Not disappearing.
Something worse.
Parts of her were becoming unreadable.
Like a sentence being erased one letter at a time.
"Dillan," she said, "you mustn’t remember the name."
Aurelia stepped closer.
"Why would remembering it destroy you?"
The One Who Stays looked at her.
"Because the name was a promise."
Dillan’s eyes opened.
He was back in the bedroom.
"What promise?"
The One Who Stays stared at him.
"You promised I would never be forgotten."
A bitter smile crossed her lips.
"Then you discovered that promises could become prisons."
The System flashed.
MEMORY FRAGMENT RECOVERED.ORIGINAL PROMISE: IDENTIFIED."I WILL GIVE YOU A NAME THAT NO ONE CAN TAKE."
Dillan’s face went pale.
A memory struck him.
A little girl sitting beneath the oak tree.
Young Dillan placing a flower crown on her head.
He had smiled.
"You need a name."
The girl had asked, "What kind?"
"One that belongs only to you."
"What if you forget it?"
Young Dillan had pressed his small hand against hers.
"Then I’ll make the whole world remember."
The memory shattered.
Dillan gasped.
The One Who Stays covered her mouth.
"You remember that?"
"Not all of it."
"Enough."
The Contract’s Hidden Clause
The countdown reached:
00: twenty-four.
The black notification expanded across the room.
ORIGINAL CONTRACT: CLAUSE REVEALED.A NAME MAY PRESERVE EXISTENCE.A NAME MAY ALSO ESTABLISH OWNERSHIP.THE FIRST NAME WAS NOT GIVEN FREELY.THE FIRST NAME WAS CLAIMED.
Sasha’s expression hardened.
"Claimed?"
Dillan looked at The One Who Stays.
"Did I force you to stay?"
The room became silent.
The One Who Stays didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
"No."
Dillan exhaled.
"But?"
Her eyes shimmered.
"You were afraid of being alone."
She gently pulled her arm away from Evelyn.
"And I was afraid of being forgotten."
The floor began to crack.
"We made a bargain."
Dillan’s voice lowered.
"What bargain?"
She looked directly at him.
"You gave me a name."
A shadow moved behind her.
"And I promised to stay."
The System screamed.
CONTRACT PARADOX DETECTED.CHOICE AND OBLIGATION HAVE BECOME INDISTINGUISHABLE.MEMORY COLLAPSE: 00:10.
Sasha grabbed Dillan’s hand.
"Dillan, choose something!"
He looked at the countdown.
Then at The One Who Stays.
Then at the faint reflection of the abandoned child in the window.
He finally understood.
The System wanted him to choose whether she stayed.
The old rule wanted him to keep her.
The Contract demanded consequences.
But none of them had asked what she wanted.
Dillan stepped forward.
"The name isn’t mine anymore."
The One Who Stays froze.
"What?"
Dillan faced the System.
"I gave it to her. That means it belongs to her."
The countdown stopped.
00:01.
Dillan looked at The One Who Stays.
"I won’t make you stay."
The last second disappeared.
CHOICE REGISTERED.OWNERSHIP CLAUSE: REJECTED.NAME CLAIM: NULLIFIED.CONSEQUENCE REQUIRED.
The One Who Stays began to fade.
Sasha shouted, "Dillan!"
He reached for her.
But The One Who Stays smiled.
Not sadly.
Not fearfully.
Freely.
"Then let me choose my own name."
The entire room went black.
And from somewhere beneath the oak tree, the abandoned child began to laugh.
Not with happiness.
With recognition.
"You finally learned."
