- Chapter 367
Memories from multiple consecutive timeline jumps stacked in his mind, mixed with a heavy, oppressive pressure.
Ansu forcibly suppressed all irritability and gloom, reorganized the current situation, and then informed everyone: All research was to be stopped immediately, and the entire team would return to the South.
Everyone had long since grown accustomed to his sudden shifts in planning. No one questioned Ansu's judgment because he could always "predict" hidden future risks. He made basically all the decisions, effectively becoming the entire team's external brain.
Celia immediately initiated a mass teleportation, and the group soon returned to the frontline camp where Elder Matthew had been stationed.
Elder Matthew was stunned to see them return so suddenly. He stepped forward to meet them and asked, “Why are you back so soon? Is the matter of the curse resolved?”
But seeing Ansu's dark face and silent demeanor, and noting that everyone else’s expressions were off, he sensibly shut his mouth and didn't dare ask more.
The night sky over the blood mist zone was forever shrouded in a strange, deep crimson, a completely different world from the North.
Inside the main tent, Ansu spread out a detailed map of the South drawn by the cult. Drawing on his memories from the simulation, he circled two locations. “These are the positions of the demon army camps, split into North and South. The demon forces have already penetrated deep into the heart of the South.”
“The northernmost one is almost at Nitre Town. The demons managed to slip in this deep without a sound?” Danielle frowned, exchanging a look with Sean. “Are the southern nobles along the way just for show?”
“You give them too much credit,” Elder Barnes said with a mocking smile. “That group of nobles is just a heap of loose sand. Forget about border security; there might even be some who intentionally let the demons in!”Many border nobles were hiring demon mercenaries to suppress rivals and fight over territory. The issue of foreign private armies at the borders had long been a major hidden danger for the Empire.
Ansu stared at the map, lost in thought. Today was the 15th, and on the night of the 20th, the demon army would launch a nighttime raid on the cult's camp.
He then addressed the group: “Within five days, the demon army will definitely launch a major offensive. Barcas has already established deep cooperation with the City of a Thousand Stars, and the Filthy Heart was something they created together. When the time comes, they will surely take out all our frontline camps and teleportation nodes.”
Celia stared at the markers for the two enemy camps, her tone cold. “We must strike first!”
Ansu nodded. He needed the Filthy Heart, so he had to have sufficient control over this area. He was going to launch a surprise raid on the demon army forces.
In the hours that followed, the camp gradually became lively. The battle mages under the cult were continuously gathering here from the North. There were veterans who had experienced the Talin region campaign and new elite mages recruited from the Northern Magic Mutual Aid Association and the Southern Alchemical Society.
Every battle mage wore cool magic armor, their cloaks fluttering under the crimson canopy. Armed to the teeth with the latest models of tactical staves and Magitech Power Warhammers, they were a force of pure elites.
The battle mage regiment had started with only fifty people but had now expanded to three hundred and forty. Although the number didn't sound like much, their average combat power was extremely high—each one was a human spell turret with no weaknesses.
As for the upcoming operation plan, it was very simple and brutal. Ansu was going to fight a true blitzkrieg.
Although these battle mages looked bulky with their equipment and lacked mobile vehicles, in a world with teleportation magic, the spell itself was the ultimate form of mobility.
During the tight preparation time, Celia led the research team to work through the night, producing dozens of magic scrolls inscribed with mass teleportation circles, which were distributed equally among the squads of the battle mage regiment.
The next day, at four in the morning.
Just as the sky was beginning to pale, the surprise raid officially began.
Ten eerie blue teleportation circles suddenly appeared in the center of the northern demon camp, the piercing sound of alarms shattering the silence of the morning.
The patrolling demon soldiers immediately surrounded them in a disciplined manner, and the crossbow ballistae on the temporary watchtowers were turned to aim at the teleportation sites.
A few seconds later, the ten teleportation circles dissipated simultaneously, and the squads of fifteen battle mages each appeared.
They had already cast thick magic shields in advance, marching forward against the incoming fire. With a series of charging sounds, magic crystals suddenly lit up, and Magitech Power Warhammers swung with a dull, wind-breaking whistle—
Boundless mana was instantly converted into terrifying kinetic energy. The heavy armor on the demon soldiers was crushed and deformed, and with a series of cracks, they were sent flying like crumpled balls of paper.
After breaking through the front-line defense, each squad immediately dispersed according to the plan, hurling Fireball spells at all the tents, watchtowers, and other facilities. With magic already pre-stored in their tactical staves, these instant-cast giant fireballs gave the enemy no chance to react, and a series of explosions boomed.
In an instant, soaring flames billowed up, their brightness almost overwhelming the crimson of the sky.
The battle mage regiment's offensive was unstoppable. The demon camp was instantly thrown into chaos. Demon commanders frantically tried to reorganize their formations, but it was in vain.
At this point, a dozen high-level demons, with strength equivalent to human high-tier mages, stepped forward. They barely managed to withstand the first wave of impact, becoming the only remaining line of defense.
But before they could stabilize their footing, several powerful mana fluctuations suddenly exploded. Almost all the cult Elders had joined the fray, their targets set directly on those high-level demons.
Leading them, Elder Matthew gave a cold laugh, his gaze locked onto the enemy's supreme commander. He wasn't good at research or breaking curses, but when it came to killing, he was a master!
While the northern camp was being raided, the southern camp met the same fate. Altina, in her crow form, circled high in the sky, overlooking the entire battlefield and continuously relaying real-time movements to Ansu.
Three hours later, the outcome of the battle was no longer in doubt.
Altina slowly descended before Ansu, shifting back into her human form to report on the progress:
“The battle mage regiments on both sides are clearing the battlefield. Now only a few high-level demons are putting up a desperate resistance—likely Barcas's capable lieutenants—but under the Elders' siege, their total destruction is only a matter of time... Additionally, no demon reinforcements have been spotted moving toward the southern border, and Barcas's whereabouts remain unknown.”
Ansu nodded and looked at the group gathered around him. “Now, the plan moves to the next step.”
This time, he didn't intend to start a 100-hour simulation as before; instead, he planned to start a 10-hour simulation.
Firstly, there was nothing that required long-term research, and secondly, this was the most cost-effective approach. He could start at least three more simulations this way—or perhaps four if he earned enough points.
Before starting the simulation, Ansu looked at everyone.
“You should already know what happens when you get close to the Filthy Heart. It will bore into the depths of your consciousness, causing you to lose yourself quickly and fall into your deepest fears.”
“This kind of pure mental damage is extremely difficult to resist. I may not be able to pull you out in time, so it's very dangerous. If you don't want to go deep, it's not too late to back out now.”
Besides himself and Celia, those present included Altina, Vera, the Danielle couple, and Professor Duncan, who insisted on joining despite his lack of strength because he was also cursed. Additionally, Valger had followed along after hearing about the plan.
Ansu wanted to use the 10-hour simulation to test things out. He needed to understand the operating patterns of the Filthy Heart, and the more people involved, the more comprehensive the sample data he would obtain.
“Brother, how can you say that?” Vera shook her head, her small face set firmly. “If it can save you, what does this little thing matter? It's just inner fear, bring it on! I have nothing to be afraid of!”
Altina's fingertips lightly brushed the crescent amulet on her chest. She looked at Ansu with a faint smile. “I'm still looking forward to you helping me save my home, Elune. I'm definitely going. And besides, I'm probably the safest person here; you don't need to worry about me.”
Danielle laughed heartily, glancing sideways at the equally determined Sean. “Rest assured, you are the benefactor of both me and my husband. We've said it before, and we'll say it again today: no matter where it is, the two of us are willing to follow you to the death!”
Ansu then looked at Professor Duncan.
Professor Duncan waved his hand and spoke somewhat weakly, “I won't bother with pretty words. I'm one of the cursed ones; this is about my life... Since this plan is crucial to solving the curse, I definitely have to go.”
Finally, Valger spoke. He adjusted his glasses, his gaze sweeping over Professor Duncan before settling back on Ansu.
“The Professor isn't in great health, so I'll accompany him. Besides, Ansu, you are a great benefactor to both me and my daughter. I'm definitely going to help with a small favor like this.”
Ansu smiled and took a deep look at everyone present.
“Thank you.”
