  7. Chapter 344

Altina-Crow leaped from Ansu's shoulder, a pale green light rippling around her as the Druid transformation spell quietly dissolved.

She landed gracefully from mid-air, restoring her form as an elven girl.

Then, she reached for her neck and unclasped the exquisite crescent amulet.

“This amulet has been protecting me all this time.”

Altina gently stroked the fine patterns on it, her eyes flickering slightly as she handed the amulet to Ansu.

Ansu took the amulet, somewhat curious. “Your amulet... has the ability to grant immunity to magic pollution?”

He had noticed Altina's amulet long ago; she never went anywhere without it. When he had asked about it before, she only said it was her “guardian god.”

Altina nodded. “Yes. As long as you wear it, your mind won't be eroded by filthy power, even if you go deep into heavily contaminated zones. When the mana plague broke out in Elune back then, I was basically the one who handled the most dangerous investigative missions.”

Ansu turned the amulet over and over, examining it closely by the firelight.

The crescent-shaped pendant was carved with complex, delicate magic runes, glowing with a gentle, warm light under the fire.

“Interesting... I've never seen this kind of rune structure before.”

It was this tiny thing that had allowed Altina to remain sane and avoid falling into madness through hundreds of years of corruption and erosion.

Ansu considered himself to have seen plenty of rune structures, but the one before him was completely unfamiliar.

It was very ancient, its runic arrangement reminding him of traditional formulas found only in magic texts from the previous era.

Yet in a sense, it was also highly modern because its runic structure was exceptionally simple and efficient. To compress such a heaven-defying magical effect into a palm-sized pendant was a masterpiece of design, even more refined than the techniques of the two rune masters, Duncan and Celia.

“This might involve a new direction for solving the magic pollution problem.” Ansu's tone carried an irrepressible excitement.

Once they returned, he would definitely have Celia analyze this thing thoroughly. Who knew what incredible new discoveries they might make.

“Oh, right!” He suddenly looked up. “Who gave this to you?”

Altina shook her head, however. “I don't know.”

“You don't know?” Ansu frowned.

“Yeah.”

“Then how did it end up in your hands?” Ansu gazed into those slightly flickering emerald eyes, growing even more puzzled.

He instinctively felt she was hiding something.

This amulet held extraordinary significance for her. Whenever she encountered a crisis, she would subconsciously stroke it, even calling it her “guardian god.” It clearly wasn't something with an origin that could be so easily dismissed as unexplained.

“It... has been by my side ever since I was born.” Altina's voice softened, her gaze landing on the slightly glowing pendant in Ansu's palm, as if looking at a relic she couldn't comprehend herself.

“I'm sorry, Ansu. I really don't know.”

“Even regarding what exactly happened to Elune back then, I still have many unsolved mysteries myself. Once I figure it out in the future, I will definitely tell you.”

“Alright.” Ansu didn't press further and returned the amulet to her.

He couldn't look too deeply into it right now anyway, because a faint sense of danger was approaching him.

Ansu instinctively scanned his surroundings. Something was approaching within the distant blood mist.

Suddenly, under a violent surge of mana, the blood mist to his side was forcibly torn open, creating a massive gap. Even the oppressive canopy overhead seemed to brighten for a split second.

Ansu and Altina turned to look at the same time.

A blood-soaked Elder Matthew walked out. Filthy mana that could no longer be suppressed surged around him, and a strange, fanatical light burned in his eyes.

“Hermit... I've finally found you!”

His gaze locked dead onto Ansu, his voice hoarse and excited.

“I've figured it out! My theory is finally complete! As long as you join my plan! As long as we take this step, the grand vision of purifying the world begins today!”

“...What plan?” Ansu looked at the crazed Elder Matthew, his temples starting to throb again.

He had originally brought these three elders further south because they possessed top-tier strength within the cult and each excelled in a specific magical field—for instance, Elder Matthew specialized in gravity magic, while Elder Kurt was proficient in Evocation magic...

But in their current state, they had instead become the most troublesome deadweight.

“The plan has always been simple. I've told you before—it's to kill all ordinary people! Kill all demihumans, demons, and elves! Kill all humans and non-human races!”

Elder Matthew laughed loudly and spread his hands, as if announcing a grand plan that had been in the making for a long time.

“I call it the 'Absolute Purification Theory'! I believe the root cause of this world's chaos is that there are simply too many lower races. Only by slaughtering them all can we fundamentally eliminate chaos and pollution, allowing the entire world to return to its original peace and tranquility!”

Ansu sighed helplessly. “Here we go again...”

He had almost forgotten that Elder Matthew was previously the most radical member of the Truth faction in the cult... Even without the influence of the Crimson Plague, his usual rhetoric had always been radical and impulsive.

“I am serious!” Elder Matthew took a step forward, filthy mana spreading out from under his feet. “And I've already formulated various highly efficient alternative plans. Listen, I'll explain them to you slowly!”

Beside him, Altina's emerald eyes were filled with worry, casting frequent glances at Ansu.

Ansu returned a reassuring look, gesturing for her to stay calm for now.

Subsequently, Elder Matthew went on and on, sharing one highly efficient method of slaughter after another, including but not limited to:

Direct slaughter through war; rounding up captives into large, enclosed spaces and releasing alchemical poison—with thirty of these massive gas chambers built in every city...

Using gravity magic to trigger massive earthquakes at weak points in the earth's crust, or if possible, giant tsunamis along the continental shelves.

Expanding the range of the Filthy Heart's influence, radiating it from the South to the entire world.

Mass sacrifices of the populace to cast city-destroying or even nation-destroying large-scale black magic rituals beyond the 9th Circle...

Each plan had clear, distinct steps. It was obviously not just a moment of mad rambling, but something he had repeatedly calculated in his mind.

As Elder Matthew finished explaining all his concepts, Altina couldn't help but shiver, a chill rising from the bottom of her heart.

Humans were truly terrifying...

More importantly, these top-tier powerhouses among mages theoretically did have the capability to put these plans into action.

And the only reason none of this had happened was because Ansu was a kind person... a righteous Chosen One.

It was Ansu who had kept a lid on this pressure cooker that could explode at any moment.

Elder Matthew made a final summary of his theory, his tone filled with a matter-of-fact arrogance.

“Mages are superior existences who command the primal power of the world. They deserve to stand at the peak of all living things. Non-mages are nothing but uncivilized ants, born to serve us and unworthy of standing on equal footing with us.”

“This world has always respected the strong, and mages are natural powerhouses! We are an entirely new race, completely separate from humanity!”

He spread his arms, the scarlet mist churning around him, casting an exceptionally hideous glow over his bloodshot face.

“How is the disaster in the South a crisis? This is a window of opportunity that comes once in a thousand years! While all the various factions are weakened by the plague... Hermit! Ansu Morris! What are you still waiting for?! This Crimson Plague is no calamity—it is our blessing!”
