Mercenaries, I Will Be King
Chapter 641 - 583: It's Hard to be a Good Person
Jiang Feng was organizing the raid while Song Heping lay beside the machine gun, deep in thought.
He felt that the situation was truly bizarre.
After all, the Alta militants were not known to favor night battles.
They usually chose to attack or ambush during the day.
The reason was simple; the Multinational Coalition had night vision equipment and radios, ready to call in A-10 attack planes for ground sweeps.
Why had no reinforcements come to aid the small medical team that was nearly annihilated?
And what got into Alta today, daring to launch a night raid on the small units of the Multinational Coalition?
"Gabri and Arthur have already started to deploy."
Jiang Feng returned to Song Heping's side, whispering, "Strike will commence in ten minutes."
Song Heping looked at the medical team on the road nearby and said with a resigned smile, "Let's hope their God shows some miracles to get them through these ten minutes; otherwise, we can only collect the bodies."
"I'm not helping them collect bodies," said Jiang Feng. "We've wasted enough time here, need to move on."
Suddenly, amid the gunfire, Song Heping heard a woman's scream.
"There's a woman..."
Jiang Feng was somewhat surprised.
Song Heping said, "It's a medical team; having female soldiers and officers is normal, let's hope they don't resort to suicide."
Time passed quickly.
The special combat squads led by Gabri and Arthur had already sneaked up behind the enemy.
"First squad in position."
"Second squad in position."
Song Heping checked his watch.
Only eight minutes had passed.
It seems that Grey Wolf and the instructors at the school had trained them well, soldiers honed with Chinese-style training were physically superb, adept at infiltration, probably perfected these complex terrain tactics during their school days.
"Action!"
With that command, Song Heping raised his machine gun and began a long burst of fire at another machine gun position not too far away that he had been eyeing for a while.
Dadadadadada—
Dadadadadada—
The two long bursts silenced the machine gun position over a hundred meters away.
The Alta militants were confused.
Their commander had not yet figured out what was happening.
Song Heping's position was supposedly held by their troops.
And now he was firing at his own machine gun positions.
"Abdul! Hou Saini! What the hell are you doing!"
In his desperation, the Alta commander made a grave mistake.
He exposed half of his body and started shouting towards them.
That was typical Alta combat mode.
Very primitive.
Their strength was their extreme familiarity with the local terrain, they could navigate it blindfolded.
Knowing where to envelop, where to ambush, where to retreat.
But their tactics were simple, and their communication relied on shouting.
Song Heping promptly delivered a burst of 7.62 bullets, sending the commander to meet his maker.
With the commander dead, the Alta militants immediately plunged into chaos.
The tables had turned.
The two special combat squads led by Gabri and Arthur flanked from behind, severing the enemy's lines completely.
An ambush battle typically forms encircling lines that converge on the target.
Once the enemy's line is broken with a flanking maneuver, the ambush loses all meaning.
Plus, all of Song Heping's men had night vision goggles, and although the terrain was not as familiar to them, they had already moved within visual range, at distances no more than fifty meters, it was merely a unilateral slaughter.
The trapped coalition forces on the highway felt a sudden decrease in pressure.
Survivors felt as though the previously intense gunfire had vanished like splashed water.
Gunfire was still dense, but no bullets hit near them or the stones in front of them.
About fifteen minutes later.
The gunfire gradually dwindled.
Song Heping, carrying his machine gun, switched positions several times to shoot.
Almost after every long burst, he immediately changed his location.
No one knew if there was a sniper on the opposing side.
Finally, Gabri's report came through the earpiece: "Principal, the enemy has been cleared, remnants are retreating eastward, do we pursue?"
"No chase."
Song Heping didn't even think about it.
After all, the principle of not pursuing impoverished enemies is absolutely correct.
He didn't need to fight these Alta members to the death, no need to hold on stubbornly.
"Past the east is Maruf, a border city; they are trying to flee back there. Let them go."
He paused and then said: "Sweep the battlefield, see if there are any survivors, bring them over, dispatch sentries, and control the perimeter."
"Understood, Principal!"
Gabri called him Principal every time.
Actually, Song Heping felt weird inside, always thinking of that historical figure.
But he couldn't say it.
Once he said it, it would become Jiang Feng's laughing stock.
"Let's go check on the highway."
The two of them, guns in hand, slowly walked down the hillside and approached the medical convoy.
"Don't shoot! Friendly!"
Jiang Feng shouted with a heavy accent in English.
Suddenly, he heard a burst of intense gunfire.
Bang bang bang—
Song Heping and Jiang Feng cussed simultaneously: "Fuck!"
A breeze brushed past Song Heping's cheek, and he could feel the warmth.
He immediately dropped to the ground.
Jiang Feng did the same.
Both men thought at first that there might still be surviving Alta members.
But they soon realized something was wrong.
No!
There were no enemies left on the slope between them and the medical convoy; they had been vigilant many times before and would have shot any enemies already.
"I'm hit, damn it!"
Lying beside him, Jiang Feng opened his hand.
It was all blood.
Song Heping was startled: "What happened?! Where were you hit?!"
He crawled over to look for the wound.
Jiang Feng grinned: "It grazed my cheek."
Turning his head, a bloody cut was indeed on the left cheek, oozing blood profusely.
"You scared me!"
Song Heping breathed a sigh of relief.
"You won't be handsome anymore."
After teasing, he asked: "Fuck, who was shooting?! It didn't sound like AKs."
"It was an M4A1," Jiang Feng glanced down the slope: "Probably those idiots were too nervous and fired at us."
"In places like this, sometimes saving people is harmful; if it weren't necessary to pass through here, we really shouldn't have saved them."
Having vented his feelings, Song Heping shouted loudly down the hill: "We are not Alta, we are from the Defense Company! Don't fucking shoot at us; if you shoot again, I will treat you as the enemy and fucking shoot you all!"
His English was better than Jiang Feng's.
Also Americanized, as he dealt with Americans most often and had recently been learning English with the American, Angel.
The soldiers of the medical unit down the slope finally heard what Song Heping said.
Their tension also eased.
Someone shouted: "We are from the 3rd Infantry Division, which Defense Company are you from!?"
Jiang Feng, lying on the ground, cursed: "I'm your grandfather!"
Song Heping shouted: "British Fuji Group's cooperating Defense Company, just arrived today; we're headed to deploy in Kandahar, don't move! Get your fingers off the trigger; it's safe now!"
"OK! Very sorry! We didn't know they were friendlies; we thought they were Alta people!"
Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division on the highway shouted.
"Who the fuck was shooting at me just now! Almost got me killed! Fuck your ancestors!"
Jiang Feng got up from the ground but still distrusted the fools on the highway, squatting behind a rock and continued to curse.
Song Heping went downhill.
As he approached, he saw a Sergeant in US Army camouflage coming over.
The other party also saw Song Heping and came up for a hug.
"Thank you so much! Brother, you are our lifesaver!"
Song Heping nodded: "No worries, just passing by and lending a hand."
Finished speaking, his gaze fell on the surroundings of the convoy.
Only then did he see clearly the horrific scene…
