Mercenaries, I Will Be King

Chapter 603 - 547 Sanchez's Paranoia

  • Next Chapter

Lascano was convinced until he was kicked out of the car and thrown to the ground that Song Heping was deliberately playing with him.

However, when he heard the sound of the car engine fading away, he tore off the hood on his head and looked around to confirm that he was indeed released.

He and his surviving twenty-plus men were dumped in a remote area on the outskirts, surrounded by disorderly piles of grass and trees, desolately stretching as far as the eye could see.

He hurriedly reached into his pocket.

Because before getting out of the car, someone had shoved a cellphone into his pocket.

The cellphone was his own.

A huge question mark appeared in his mind.

Lascano felt that the whole world had become surreal.

He made a phone call, instructing his men to drive over and pick him up.

The twenty-plus men didn't dare to linger beside the road but hid in the small woods nearby.

"Boss, why did they release us?"

One of his men couldn't hold back anymore and asked this soul-searching question.

Over twenty men stared at each other with disbelief, unable to believe they were still alive.

This was absolutely not the style of Mexican gangs.

In any gang clash, once you fall into the hands of a rival gang, the outcome would definitely be getting strung up on lampposts or mutilated.

"Did they poison our food?"

"Are we poisoned?"

"I feel fine, doesn't seem like poisoning..."

"Then why did they release us?"

The men were discussing heatedly, and Lascano was frustrated and agitated.

His mind was in total disarray.

He couldn't answer this result.

But still, it was good just to be alive.

After waiting over two hours, the members of Los Zetas finally drove here and found Lascano and others hiding in the woods.

Everyone got into the vehicle, Lascano, highly vigilant, threw away his phone, got a new one, and then left Saltillo City with his men as if they were escaping.

After more than three hours of turmoil, this group of defeated generals finally retreated back to their own territory, returning to the five-story headquarters in Victoria City.

Upon entering, Lascano went to the liquor cabinet, grabbed a bottle of alcohol, twisted off the cap, and gulped down nearly half the bottle.

He needed the fierce stimulation of alcohol to stabilize his emotions.

Reality, at this moment, was like a bunch of yarn tangled by a cat and impossible to find the end.

Sitting on the balcony, Lascano stared at the night sky for a long time, unable to comprehend why Song Heping had spared him.

After suffering a deadly attack, nearly losing his life, that person had just taken him back to talk about life and aspirations for hours, and then released him?

The phone rang.

It was Sanchez calling.

Lascano thought for a moment, then still answered it.

"Lascano, I heard you guys were captured, and then released today?"

"Yes..."

"What did Song do to you? How did he let you go so easily?"

Sanchez sounded full of doubts.

But Lascano couldn't answer.

If he told Sanchez that Song Heping had talked with him several times in the detention basement for half a day about life, aspirations, and family, then Sanchez would definitely think he was lying.

"He interrogated me, but I didn't reveal anything."

Lascano said, "But why he released me, I don't know, now I want to know the answer too."

"He didn't say? This guy Song didn't say why he released you?" Sanchez's doubt seemed to deepen.

Lascano knew he couldn't clarify this matter, Sanchez was essentially a suspicious guy.

Maybe now he thinks I'm definitely hiding some secret from him.

That's right!

At this moment, a flash of insight struck Lascano.

"Boss, I think he deliberately did not kill us to make you doubt me, I didn't understand it before, but now I suddenly do!"

"Make me doubt you?" Sanchez still sounded unconvinced: "Is it that simple?"

"I can't think of any other reason either," Lascano said helplessly. His situation was like mud falling into his pants – even if it's not exactly shit, it still is.

"Alright..."

Sanchez seemed to have no better arguments to question with, so after a brief silence, he said, "You should rest early; I'll come over to see you in a couple of days."

"Boss, I didn't handle this well."

"It's okay, Mr. Song is a master. If we didn't kill him this time, we'll find another chance."

The busy tone sounded, and Lascano held the phone, staring blankly for a long time.

He understood Sanchez.

He wouldn't be happy about his safe return, rather he would suspect him.

Even though he had tried his best to explain just now.

But the effect, it seems, wasn't good.

He suddenly understood Song Heping's open scheme.

This guy deliberately let him go, then created discord between him and Sanchez, using this opportunity to divide them.

Although he had been looking for an opportunity to break away from Gulf Group, it was merely ambition up until now, as the strength of Los Zetas Organization wasn't yet a match for Gulf Group. With only his own men, it would be difficult to compete systematically with the group.

Especially in terms of revenue, it wasn't yet possible to operate the drug business independently.

Breaking relations at this time would be detrimental to himself.

"Damn! Such a cunning China People!"

Now he knew that Song Heping was using them to kill each other.

Killing him directly at the villa would have only taken out some organizational elites, someone would replace him, and the Los Zetas Organization wouldn't be significantly damaged.

Getting him and Sanchez to have conflicts and then using Gulf Group to take him and his organization down…

Just thinking about it sent chills down his spine.

But this was a dead end.

Even seeing through it was useless.

Sanchez's tone just now clearly indicated he no longer trusted him.

What was going to happen next?

Lascano felt he needed to prepare for both possibilities.

Although his organization's strength wasn't yet comparable to Gulf Group, he couldn't just sit and wait for death, could he?

"Gasco, Titus, Randy! Get up here, we need a meeting!"

He walked to the stairway and shouted to his subordinates in the lobby below, calling his most trusted aides for a meeting to discuss countermeasures.

While Lascano was preparing how to guard against Sanchez's move, in a villa on the outskirts of Saltillo City, White Bear, Hunter, Jiang Feng, and others who had returned after releasing the hostages were equally puzzled.

"Where's the boss?"

White Bear asked the Queen who stayed behind.

Queen pointed inside: "He's been in the room, door closed, hasn't come out."

Then she asked, "Did you really let the people go?"

"Of course we let them go, dropped them beside the highway." White Bear glanced at Song Heping's room door, wanting to knock but hesitated to disturb him.

Normally, Song Heping stayed in his room when engaged in important matters.

"You all say, releasing Lascano and his men, isn't this just letting the tiger return to the mountain for them to attack us again?"

White Bear really wanted to kill.

After all, Queen was injured in the attack.

In his view, executing all those twenty-odd people and disposing of their bodies in the wild for the dogs was absolutely correct.

Yet Song Heping asked them to release the people?

While everyone in the living room was confused, Song Heping was watching a video in his room.

The video was taken during his lengthy discussion about life and ideals with Lascano.

After watching for a while, Song Heping picked up the phone and dialed Kelly's number.

"Ma'am, I have some video material here, I need your technical department to help process it as per my requirements and standards, I know you have the technology for this."

"What video?"

"A video of my conversation with Lascano."

"What kind of technical processing do you need?"

"Editing, extracting audio, compositing – I'll create the content I need, for what content I will tell you in an email."

"We do have the expertise for that, but I'm very curious, what exactly are you planning?"

"You'll understand everything once you see my email," Song Heping said. "Killing Lascano or handing him over to you isn't the best outcome, I believe my plan will be more effective this time."
