Marvel: I Am The Lord of the Shadow Dimension

Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The Cosmic Overlord, Thanos

  • Next Chapter

After wasting time flying all the way across the ridiculously long Rainbow Bridge, Luke finally approached the Bifrost observatory. From a distance, he saw a massive flash of lightning erupt from the entrance, violently launching Loki out of the structure and sending him tumbling across the bridge.

Having reawakened his true divine power, Thor's combat strength had skyrocketed. Easily dispatching Loki, Thor turned to look at the massive, swirling energy vortex of the activated Bifrost.

Remembering how the Frost Giants had brazenly infiltrated Asgard's sacred vault and subsequently sent an assassination squad to Earth, Thor huffed in anger. He pointedly decided not to immediately shut down the Bifrost, allowing it to continue firing its destructive energy beam into Jotunheim.

'Wait, the plot changed this drastically?!'

Luke stared in absolute shock. He hadn't expected Thor to actually let the Bifrost continue destroying Jotunheim!

But honestly, Luke didn't really care. He had zero sympathy for the Frost Giants anyway. His primary concern was figuring out how this altered plot would affect the overall timeline and what Odin's reaction would be.

Although he hadn't spotted Odin anywhere nearby, Luke was absolutely certain the paranoid old King was hiding somewhere, secretly watching the entire drama unfold.

Landing lightly on the crystalline surface of the bridge, Luke saw Loki groaning and slowly picking himself up a few yards away.

Loki looked up. Seeing that Thor had made no attempt to close the Bifrost, a twisted, maniacal laugh bubbled out of Loki's throat.

"So, what exactly happened in there? Care to fill me in?" Luke asked casually, walking toward them.

Since the plot had derailed this heavily, Luke couldn't rely on his movie knowledge to guess what the two brothers had actually said to each other inside the observatory.

"He used our father as bait! He lured the King of the Frost Giants into Asgard to assassinate him!" Thor answered, his voice thick with anger and disbelief.

Thor had initially believed Loki was trying to let Laufey murder Odin so Loki could permanently steal the throne. But when Thor burst into the Odinsleep chamber, he had been shocked to see Loki actually protecting Odin and murdering Laufey instead!

However, the moment Loki saw Thor standing there alive and fully empowered, Loki's smug, triumphant expression had instantly shattered. He looked as if he had just seen a ghost.

Thor, sensing something was horribly wrong, had confronted his brother. During the ensuing argument, Loki accidentally let slip that he was the one who had convinced Laufey to send the assassins to Earth in the first place!

Realizing his treason was exposed, Loki had used the element of surprise to blast Thor with Gungnir. He then fled the chamber, raced to the observatory, activated the Bifrost at maximum power, and locked it onto Jotunheim.

Thor had quickly pieced together Loki's grand, convoluted scheme: First, assassinate Thor on Earth to eliminate the true heir. Second, murder Laufey in 'defense' of the King. Third, destroy Jotunheim entirely. By claiming he had avenged Asgard and annihilated their ancient enemy, Loki would secure his absolute, unquestionable claim to the throne before Odin even woke up.

But Loki hadn't factored in one crucial detail: Asgardians respected warriors. The Asgardian people would always prefer a bold, frontline commander like Thor over a secretive, manipulative schemer like Loki, regardless of how many political victories Loki orchestrated from the shadows.

Loki knew he had lost. But he didn't believe he had lost because his plan was flawed; he believed he had lost because of what he was.

During the chaos of the vault infiltration, Loki had accidentally touched the Casket of Ancient Winters. To his absolute horror, the artifact hadn't frozen him. Instead, his skin had turned a deep, frosty blue, and ancient, raised markings had appeared on his arms. He had realized the horrifying truth: he was a Frost Giant. A monster.

Suddenly, everything made sense. Why Odin had always favored Thor. Why Odin had given Thor Mjolnir and encouraged him to lead the armies, while Loki was shoved aside to study 'cowardly' magic. Odin had never intended for a Frost Giant to sit on the throne of Asgard!

Staring at the blinding, destructive beam of the Bifrost tearing his homeworld apart, Loki's manic laughter slowly turned into a broken, choking sob.

Loki's feelings toward the Frost Giants were incredibly complex. He had been raised to view them as evil, barbaric, and utterly heartless monsters. Discovering that he was actually one of them had shattered his identity, filling him with profound confusion and deep-seated self-loathing.

He had desperately craved the love, attention, and roaring adoration that Thor received effortlessly. That desperate need for validation was what drove him to orchestrate this entire, apocalyptic scheme.

Looking down at his trembling hands, Loki mentally pictured the millions of Frost Giants currently dying because of him. 'Perhaps this is what Frost Giants truly are. Filthy, selfish, barbaric monsters... because that is exactly what I am.'

Thor glanced at the active Bifrost console. Seeing that the coordinates were locked onto Jotunheim and not Earth, he let out a massive sigh of relief. For a terrifying second, he thought Loki was trying to destroy Midgard to spite him.

As for the Frost Giants? Thor really couldn't care less if they all burned.

Thor marched over to his brother and angrily grabbed him by the collar of his leather armor. But as he pulled Loki close, he realized something was terribly wrong with Loki's expression.

"Loki? What's wrong?" Thor asked, his anger instantly evaporating, completely forgetting his intention to punish his treacherous brother.

"Brother? Is that what you still believe I am?" Loki asked, his voice trembling as he looked up at Thor.

"Of course! No matter what you've done, you will always be my brother," Thor said earnestly, staring deeply into Loki's eyes.

CLICK-CHCK.

The incredibly loud, highly inappropriate sound of a digital camera shutter echoed across the silent bridge, completely shattering the intense, emotional atmosphere.

"Uh... Uncle?" Thor looked at Luke in utter bewilderment.

"My bad. Forgot to turn the shutter sound off. Please, carry on," Luke said unapologetically, quickly muting his phone and continuing to snap photos from different angles.

'I already know exactly what caption I'm going to use for these when I post them online,' Luke thought maliciously. 'Besides, Asgard doesn't have libel lawyers.'

Thor sighed helplessly and turned back to Loki. "You probably haven't formally met him yet. This is Luke. He officially became sworn blood-brothers with our father yesterday, making him our Uncle."

'Sworn blood-brothers with Odin? Yesterday?!'

Loki froze. Remembering Odin's frail, comatose body lying in the Odinsleep chamber, an intense feeling of suspicion and dread washed over him.

To prevent Loki from accusing him of being a liar, Luke quickly pulled the heavy golden token from his belt and held it up.

The moment Loki sensed the undeniable, absolute divine signature radiating from the token, his mind reeled.

If Odin had genuinely sworn a blood oath with this Midgardian yesterday... why was he pretending to be in the Odinsleep?! Or worse... had Odin been awake this entire time, silently watching Loki's treasonous plotting?!

Suddenly, a strange, terrifying calm settled over Loki. He shoved Thor away, creating distance between them.

"So... you are the one who ruined my plan? Uncle?"

Loki's entire demeanor shifted. The broken, grieving prince vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating killer glaring at Luke with absolute malice.

"Whoa, what's with the sudden attitude change?" Luke frowned, immediately noticing something was fundamentally wrong with Loki's expression.

Specifically, the color of Loki's eyes had changed. His normally green eyes were now glowing with a sickly, pale yellow hue.

The glowing eyes triggered a massive red flag in Luke's memory. 'Where have I seen that specific symptom before?!'

Before Luke could connect the dots, Loki raised Gungnir and fired a massive, concussive blast of golden energy directly at Thor, violently launching the unprepared prince off the bridge and into the churning ocean below. Without pausing, Loki spun around and unleashed a continuous barrage of energy blasts at Luke.

"What the hell?!"

Luke immediately summoned a thick, hemispherical shield of pure dark energy. With his passive regeneration now sitting at a massive 11,200 Energy Points per second, he effortlessly absorbed the rapid-fire blasts.

But hiding behind a shield wasn't Luke's style. Glancing down at his casual sneakers, he slightly regretted not wearing his heavy combat boots, but he steadily began walking forward, pushing through the barrage of golden energy.

Seeing that Gungnir was completely ineffective against the dark shield, Loki sneered. He tossed the legendary spear aside and pulled out the Casket of Ancient Winters.

Ignoring the creeping, pale blue frost spreading up his arms as he held the artifact, Loki flashed a wicked smile at Luke and flipped the Casket open, unleashing a terrifying, concentrated blizzard of absolute zero cold directly at the shield.

Luke immediately braced himself. This wasn't standard ice magic; the Casket generated cold intense enough to physically freeze Heimdall, a god!

Luke rapidly pushed more dark energy into the shield to violently annihilate the encroaching, magical frost, but the Casket's output was staggering. His passive regeneration wasn't enough to keep up with the burn rate.

'Well, we aren't on Earth right now, which means I don't have to worry about the Sanctums' barrier!'

Luke instantly focused his mind, establishing a direct, unrestricted link to the Dark Dimension.

A massive, swirling portal of pure darkness opened behind him. A terrifying torrent of highly concentrated dark energy flooded into the material plane, bolstering his shield. With access to his massive stockpile of over two million Energy Points, Luke wasn't afraid of a battle of attrition.

While the Casket of Ancient Winters theoretically possessed the power to plunge an entire planet into a new Ice Age, Loki clearly lacked the mastery required to utilize its full potential.

Fueled by a practically infinite energy reserve, Luke's dark energy shield not only halted the blizzard, but began steadily expanding outward, slowly pushing Loki backward.

Suddenly, Thor, who had managed to fly back up from the ocean, roared in anger and charged at Loki from the flank.

But before Thor could reach him, a massive, highly concentrated energy beam shot out of nowhere, striking Thor directly in the chest and violently launching him away again.

A second energy beam lanced toward Luke.

Thanks to his 16x superhuman reflexes, Luke barely managed to sidestep the incoming attack. The beam completely missed him and struck the crystalline surface of the Rainbow Bridge.

BOOOM!

The bridge violently shattered, leaving a massive, gaping crater.

Severing the bridge instantly disrupted the flow of cosmic energy powering the Bifrost observatory. The destructive beam firing into Jotunheim finally abruptly ceased.

However, the energy constantly flowing from the palace into the severed bridge had nowhere to go. It began violently violently venting out of the crater, creating a volatile, expanding maelstrom of highly unstable cosmic radiation right under Luke's feet.

Luke could feel the raw, destructive energy rapidly accumulating inside the distant palace generators as well. If this continued for even a few more minutes, the resulting feedback loop would trigger a cataclysmic explosion capable of wiping out a massive chunk of Asgard!

"What the hell is going on?!" Luke yelled, rapidly wrapping his entire body in a dense layer of dark energy to protect himself from the ambient cosmic radiation violently spewing from the shattered bridge.

Suddenly, a blinding golden figure materialized high in the sky above the chaos.

Odin All-Father looked down at the violently destabilizing bridge. With a roar of effort, Odin unleashed a terrifying, ocean-like wave of pure divine magic. The sheer, overwhelming pressure of the All-Father's power forcefully suppressed and stabilized the volatile cosmic energy venting from the bridge, averting a catastrophic explosion.

Luke quickly backed away from the venting crater. He looked in the direction the sniper beams had come from, but he couldn't see anything in the empty void of space.

He glanced up at Odin. To his horror, the old King was heavily panting, his golden armor dulling, looking as if he were about to collapse out of the sky.

'Oh crap! The enemy is hidden, and my biggest sugar daddy is about to pass out?!'

Panicking, Luke instantly funneled a massive surge of dark energy through their magical contract, aggressively pumping over a hundred thousand Energy Points directly into Odin's failing body.

The sudden influx of raw power stabilized Odin. The King took a deep breath, his golden aura flaring back to life. He offered Luke a brief, grateful nod.

Odin extended his hand. Gungnir, which Loki had discarded on the bridge, instantly flew up and locked into the King's grasp.

Channeling his renewed divine power into the spear, Odin violently hurled Gungnir into the seemingly empty void of space above Asgard.

KRA-KOOM!

Gungnir struck an invisible target. The sheer impact violently shattered a massive optical camouflage field, revealing a massive, incredibly advanced alien warship hovering ominously in orbit!

"Where the hell did a warship come from?!" Luke gasped in shock.

For a hostile alien armada to silently bypass Heimdall and approach Asgard undetected was supposedly impossible!

"ACTIVATE THE ANTI-AIR DEFENSES!" Odin's voice boomed across the realm.

Instantly, the golden spires and towers of the massive Asgardian palace began shifting and transforming, revealing hundreds of heavy, magical artillery cannons.

However, much to Odin's embarrassment, Asgard had enjoyed peace for so long that a significant portion of the automated defense grid completely failed to activate due to lack of maintenance. The resulting anti-air barrage was sporadic and uncoordinated, but the blinding magical flak successfully disrupted the stealth fields of several more massive warships hovering in orbit!

Odin frowned deeply, disgusted by the pathetic state of Asgard's military readiness. But there was no time to lecture his generals.

He offered Luke another quick nod before launching himself directly into the sky. Enveloped in a terrifying aura of golden energy, Odin became a living missile, physically crashing through the enemy warships, effortlessly tearing their heavily armored hulls apart from the inside.

Luke focused entirely on maintaining a constant, 5,000 Energy Point per second feed into Odin, ensuring the King had enough fuel to maintain his rampage. Watching the massive, hostile warships explode and plummet from the sky, Luke breathed a sigh of relief.

But he was increasingly curious about who possessed the resources and stealth technology to organize a full-scale, covert invasion of Asgard.

Suddenly, Luke heard the rhythmic clanking of heavily armored boots approaching from behind.

He turned around, expecting to see a squad of Asgardian royal guards arriving to secure the bridge.

"Hey, guys, you're a bit late. The King is already handling the big targets up there, so..."

Luke trailed off. He noticed the eyes of the approaching Einherjar guards. They were all glowing with the exact same sickly, pale yellow hue as Loki's!

'Wait a minute...'

Luke glanced back at the shattered section of the Rainbow Bridge. Because the cosmic energy conduit had been completely severed, the ambient 'anti-teleportation' field preventing him from using his dimensional abilities was gone in this specific area!

Luke instantly summoned a massive squad of Shadow Ninjas and ordered them to subdue the mind-controlled guards.

As the pieces finally clicked together, Luke realized exactly who was behind this entire invasion.

Thanos!

Only Thanos possessed the Mind Stone! In the original movies, the Mind Stone was housed inside a scepter, and it seemed to require physical contact to brainwash someone. But clearly, in this reality, the Stone's capabilities were far more terrifying and versatile if it could remotely mind-control an entire squad of elite Asgardian guards—and potentially even a Prince!

The Shadow Ninjas swarmed the mind-controlled guards, quickly disarming them and pinning them to the bridge.

Simultaneously, the massive warships in orbit began deploying hundreds of small, agile fighter pods. The pods easily evaded Asgard's pathetic, uncoordinated anti-air fire and began swarming toward the bridge.

Thor, having recovered from the sniper blast, flew back up into the sky, violently swinging Mjolnir to intercept the fighter pods.

With Odin dismantling the capital ships and Thor swatting the fighters out of the sky, the father-son duo was dominating the airspace.

However, the sheer volume of fighters was overwhelming, and several pods managed to break through Thor's defensive line, diving directly toward the bridge.

Luke suddenly noticed Loki calmly walking toward the edge of the shattered bridge. He immediately ordered a Shadow Ninja to intercept him. But when the ninja grabbed Loki's shoulder, the prince's body flickered and vanished into green mist!

Instantly, a dozen identical Lokis materialized across the bridge. They all offered the same mocking, wicked smile before casually stepping off the edge, plummeting toward the ocean below.

"You think you can escape that easily?!" Luke growled. He ordered the ninjas guarding the mind-controlled soldiers to physically knock them unconscious to ensure they stayed down, then immediately deployed a thousand more Shadow Ninjas to chase after Loki.

Hundreds of ninjas dove off the bridge after the falling Lokis. Using their bodies to form long, interconnected chains anchored to the bridge, the ninjas successfully managed to grab every single falling Loki out of the air!

But to Luke's immense frustration, every single one of them dissipated into green mist! They were all illusions!

'How is that possible?! Where is the real one?!'

Luke was utterly confused, until he remembered Loki's signature, most infuriating trick.

He whipped his head around.

One of the 'unconscious,' mind-controlled Asgardian guards lying on the bridge suddenly stood up. The guard rubbed the back of his head, offered Luke a highly sarcastic, mocking salute, and casually stepped backward off the bridge.

Before the ninjas could react, a strange, sleek alien fighter pod zoomed past, perfectly catching the disguised Loki mid-air and rapidly accelerating away from Asgard.

'Damn it! He's a Frost Giant! His base physical durability is significantly higher than a standard Asgardian! The ninja didn't hit him hard enough to knock him out!'

Luke instantly ignited his flight boots and rocketed off the bridge in hot pursuit. But before he could gain any ground, a massive swarm of enemy fighter pods dove down, unleashing a barrage of plasma fire to cover Loki's escape.

"Annoying flies!" Luke roared in absolute frustration.

He raised both hands. Nearly a million points of stored dark energy violently erupted from his body, forming a massive, terrifying tidal wave of pure annihilation. The wave crashed into the pursuing fighter pods, instantly shredding them into microscopic dust.

But as the dark energy cleared, Luke watched in horror as the sleek fighter carrying Loki activated a highly advanced warp-drive. Space violently contorted around the ship, and it instantly vanished into a hyperspace jump, disappearing completely.

Luke hovered in the air, his expression incredibly dark.

Thanos.

When Luke first watched the movies, he always thought the writing was slightly flawed. Loki was a deeply flawed, jealous character who desperately wanted his father's approval and to be seen as an equal to Thor. He was petty, manipulative, and arrogant. But orchestrating a complex, suicidal plot to literally murder his own brother and commit genocide just for a throne? That felt slightly too extreme, even for him.

But if Thanos had been secretly, maliciously influencing Loki's mind with the Mind Stone from the very beginning, amplifying his darkest insecurities and subtly guiding him toward madness... then everything made perfect, terrifying sense.

With the Mind Stone, executing subtle, untraceable psychological manipulation was incredibly easy.

Luke had originally assumed Thanos would never dare to make a move against Asgard while Odin was still alive and breathing. But the Mad Titan had proven him wrong. He had brazenly orchestrated a covert invasion right under the All-Father's single eye!

'I guess he really was taking advantage of the fact that Odin is half-blind,' Luke thought grimly, staring at the empty space where Loki had vanished.
