Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 308: Not Answering the Phone
Anne Sutton looked at her mother and said, "I can’t bear to part with Ian."
Mrs. Sutton: "..."
She looked at Anne Sutton, her face a mask of confusion. ’Is there something wrong with my daughter?’
’Ian is Ethan Linden’s son, and who even knows what woman he had him with. What is there for her to be so attached to?’
Anne Sutton looked at her mother and asked, "Mom, you’ve met Ian. Don’t you think he’s cute?"
As she said this, Anne Sutton had the exact same look she used to get as a child after scoring perfectly on a test, waiting for praise.
’After all, Ian’s very existence brought her a greater sense of accomplishment than any perfect test score ever could.’
’Because Ian was just so darn cute!’
Mrs. Sutton said, "He’s fine."
’No matter what, he’s still Ethan Linden’s son.’
’However cute he might be, what does that have to do with Anne?’
’No matter how adorable, he’s still another family’s child.’
’Anne’s connection to Ethan Linden might not be a problem now, but there’s no telling what might happen down the line!’
’She could even end up in a dispute with Ethan Linden over the boy in the future.’
Anne Sutton was a little crushed to hear her mother say Ian wasn’t cute. "How is he not cute? He’s so well-behaved and sensible! When I was three, I was a total dunce!"
"Who says?" Mrs. Sutton countered. "You were very clever as a child, too!"
Anne Sutton rolled her eyes at her mother. "I’m not talking to you about this anymore."
’She’d just wanted to hear her mother praise her son, but her mom had been unkind from the very first word. Her poor Ian.’
Mrs. Sutton looked at Anne Sutton, baffled. "I’m talking about someone else’s kid, yet you’re getting this upset! What’s gotten into you?"
"You don’t understand," Anne Sutton said.
"Yes! I don’t understand," Mrs. Sutton said, turning to look out the window and falling silent.
She was already in a bad mood.
Seeing her mother’s sorrowful expression, Anne Sutton said, "That’s not what I meant. Mom... when we go to Veridia, I’ll take you to see him. How about we leave this place for good someday?"
’She might not have much else right now, but she had a child and she had money...’
’There was no need to stay in Westhaven and waste time on that scumbag, Sean Sutton.’
’As long as she was here, she would take care of her mother, no matter what.’
Mrs. Sutton said to Anne Sutton, "You can arrange it."
Seeing her mother’s dispirited look, Anne Sutton said, "By the way, I’ve already had someone clean up the house. Why don’t we go over and take a look later?"
It wasn’t just her mother—Anne Sutton couldn’t bear to leave that house either.
’Now that she had it back, she had to go and check on her territory.’
At this, Mrs. Sutton nodded. "Alright."
"I knew you weren’t comfortable living here," Anne Sutton said.
Mrs. Sutton said, "I don’t like this place. If you hadn’t married into the Fawcett Family, everything would be different."
Hearing her mother’s words, Anne Sutton said, "If I hadn’t married into the Fawcett Family, there’s no telling how the Prescotts would be bullying me right now!"
Anne Sutton didn’t bother thinking about hypotheticals.
’In fact, thinking about it now, she didn’t regret the path she had taken.’
’No matter what, at least she no longer had to live at the mercy of others.’
Mrs. Sutton looked at Anne Sutton and sighed, her gaze filled with pity.
’She had been too useless, forcing her own daughter to make a sacrifice for the family.’
’But even after all that, what she got in return was that man’s betrayal.’
...
Anne Sutton sent a message to Sharon Sutton, telling her to get ready to go home with them.
Sharon Sutton agreed.
Anne Sutton led her mother downstairs, where a car was already waiting outside.
Anne Sutton helped her mother into the car and, seeing that Sharon Sutton still hadn’t arrived, gave her a call.
On the phone, Sharon Sutton said, "I’m coming, I’m coming!"
Five minutes later, she and David Hayes finally hurried down.
Seeing Anne Sutton, Sharon Sutton asked, "Is Mom here already?"
"In the car."
David Hayes took the front passenger seat, while Anne Sutton, Sharon Sutton, and their mother sat in the back.
In the car, David Hayes glanced at Anne Sutton and asked, "Anne, how long are you staying this time? Will you be going back?"
"I’m heading back after the New Year."
David Hayes said, "That’s great! If you hadn’t come back, we wouldn’t have known what to do!"
Anne Sutton looked at the man. He was family now, but she still couldn’t get used to it.
She asked David Hayes, "Are you and Sharon not planning on having a wedding ceremony?"
The two of them had already registered their marriage but hadn’t held a wedding yet.
David Hayes said, "We were thinking about it, but Sharon said that with the family’s situation right now, it would be better to do it later."
Anne Sutton glanced at Sharon Sutton, who said, "A wedding is such a hassle! It costs money and takes up so much time. We’re perfectly fine as we are."
After she got together with David Hayes, their mother fell ill...
So many things had happened, and she simply couldn’t handle it all.
Anne Sutton didn’t say anything else.
They soon arrived home.
Anne Sutton had already had all traces of the Evans family cleared out, restoring the house to how it used to be.
It was also beautifully decorated, with large red lanterns still hung up, giving it a very festive New Year’s atmosphere.
Whenever their father was busy working, their mother was the one who decorated the house for the holidays.
Ever since she was a child, Anne Sutton had always felt that her home had a wonderful New Year’s spirit, a feeling she cherished.
But she recalled what her father had said during the divorce...
...that her mother did nothing, that all the family’s money was earned by him alone.
...
Once they were home, Anne Sutton accompanied her mother on a tour. "What do you think? If there’s anything you don’t like, just tell me, and I’ll have someone change it."
Mrs. Sutton glanced at Anne Sutton. "You did a wonderful job," she said.
’In her eyes, Anne had always been a child.’
’But now, it seemed she had finally grown up.’
’Even without her, Anne could handle everything just fine.’
"That’s good!" Anne Sutton said. "Then we’ll spend the New Year here."
Originally, Anne Sutton had planned to spend it at the Fawcett residence.
But her mother seemed unhappy there all the time.
She didn’t like the Fawcett Family, always feeling it was a lion’s den that had put Anne Sutton through hell.
That was why Anne Sutton had brought her back.
’This was better, anyway.’
In truth, Anne Sutton liked this place too. It was just that the mess the Evans family had made of it last time had left a bad taste in her mouth.
But now everything had been put right.
...
After dinner, Anne Sutton returned to her room. Last time, that shameless Yvonne Evans had actually been living in her room.
Anne Sutton had thrown many things out.
She had even replaced the bed.
She sat down just as a call came in from Nathan Fawcett. She answered it.
"Why haven’t you been answering my calls?" Nathan Fawcett asked.
Ever since Anne Sutton had returned, his calls had consistently gone unanswered.
"Sorry," Anne Sutton said. "I got busy with other things and didn’t hear my phone ring."
"It seems I’m not on your mind at all," Nathan Fawcett said.
"Of course you’re not on my mind," Anne Sutton retorted. "Only Ian is. Where is he?"
"After saying that, do you really think I’m going to let you see Ian?" Nathan Fawcett said.
"Alright, I was wrong!" Anne Sutton said. "Now, hurry up and put Ian on."
They were on a video call.
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Nathan Fawcett said, "He’s asleep."
