Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 292: She is the Family Head’s Wife
Anne Sutton smiled. "It’s nothing. I’m not cold, anyway."
Nathan Fawcett said, "What were you and Justin Shields talking about? You looked so happy."
He’d been watching from upstairs, overcome with jealousy!
Anne Sutton said, "Oh, nothing much. We just talked a bit about my dad. The Spring Festival is coming up, so I’ll need to go back to Westhaven for the holiday. I’ll head back once the hospital gives me time off."
’Once I’m back, I can finally deal with my family’s affairs.’
Nathan Fawcett looked at her. "You’re not planning to stay here for the holiday?"
Anne Sutton said, "No! I still have things to take care of back home. It wouldn’t be right for me to stay here."
Nathan Fawcett said, "But Ian was hoping you’d be here to spend the Spring Festival with him!"
Anne Sutton looked at him, the corners of her mouth lifting. "Then you can bring him to Westhaven with me! You have to go see your father at some point anyway."
Westhaven had a custom of ancestral worship during the Spring Festival.
For the past few years, Miles Prescott and Charles Prescott had been in charge of it.
Nathan Fawcett said, "We’ll see when the time comes."
He hadn’t gone back for the Spring Festival in years.
His father was gone, and he didn’t feel like he had any family there anymore.
Besides, he was never one for such traditions.
And...
His mother was here, and he wanted to spend time with her.
Anne Sutton said, "I knew you wouldn’t go."
She followed Nathan Fawcett inside and saw Caleb Summers sitting on the sofa, talking with Ian.
He was holding Ian and said, "Call me Uncle Summers."
Ian glanced at him and said, "Caleb-y."
"..." Caleb Summers stared at the little brat. "Is that any way to talk to your elders? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?!"
Ian just looked at him and grinned.
When Caleb Summers saw Nathan Fawcett and Anne Sutton walk in, he said to Anne, "Sis-in-law."
Anne Sutton glanced at him. "Don’t call me that. You can just use my name."
"I wouldn’t dare," Caleb Summers said. "Ethan would strangle me! He was even picking on me earlier today."
’To think Nathan Fawcett actually stomped on my foot! The nerve!’
Anne Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett. "You picked on him?"
"Don’t listen to his nonsense." Nathan Fawcett, of course, wasn’t about to admit it.
Anne Sutton glanced at Caleb Summers. "If you two have something to discuss, I’ll go get some rest."
’I’ve already eaten, anyway.’
Caleb Summers said, "It’s nothing, I just came to see how your injuries are healing, Sis-in-law! I was a little worried about you, that’s all."
Anne Sutton said, "I’m fine."
’Caleb Summers actually came all this way just to see her?’
Anne Sutton really couldn’t figure out what he was thinking.
Nathan Fawcett’s mouth twitched. He looked at Caleb Summers and said, "You can go now."
Caleb Summers said, "Sis-in-law, look at him! He’s picking on me again! I’ve never seen Ethan care so much about a woman! Sis-in-law, our Ethan is way better than that Shields kid! Don’t let that guy steal you away."
After Caleb Summers said this, Nathan Fawcett didn’t actually argue with him.
’He finally said something useful!’
Anne Sutton glanced at Caleb Summers, then at Nathan Fawcett.
She said to Caleb, "You’re quite protective of Ethan Linden. I thought you’d be hoping for me and him to break up."
Caleb Summers said, "Not at all! I’m thrilled that our Ethan has someone to take care of him."
If it were anyone else, he would certainly have his objections.
But Anne Sutton was genuinely good to Nathan Fawcett.
Because he’d interacted with Anne Sutton before, his impression of her wasn’t so bad anymore.
It’s just that...
’Those people at the company will probably start complaining again about Ethan Linden and Anne Sutton being together.’
Anne Sutton sat to the side. Nathan Fawcett looked at her and asked, "You got some sleep. Feeling better?"
Anne Sutton said, "Much better."
It was never anything serious to begin with.
They had just sat down when the butler came in and said to Nathan Fawcett, "Sir, your uncle is here. He’s brought Ryan Linden with him."
Yesterday, Nathan Fawcett had been in a rush to take Anne Sutton for a check-up, so he hadn’t really dealt with them.
Hearing this, Caleb Summers let out a cold laugh. "Ryan Linden actually dares to show his face here!"
He hadn’t gone looking for trouble yesterday, but he hadn’t expected Ryan Linden to deliver himself to their doorstep today.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Let them in."
A moment later, Victor Linden entered with Ryan Linden.
Ryan Linden looked quite disheveled and wasn’t speaking as arrogantly as he had the night before.
Victor Linden walked in and said to Nathan Fawcett, "Ethan, I heard your second brother accidentally hurt your wife last night, so I brought him over to apologize today."
"Accidentally?" Nathan Fawcett said. "You must be joking, Uncle. It was no accident. Second Brother did it on purpose."
Hearing Nathan Fawcett’s words, Ryan Linden glanced at him and said, "Well, you hit me yesterday, too."
Nathan Fawcett sat to the side, looking at the man. "So, Second Brother, are you saying you still don’t think you did anything wrong?"
Called out like that, Ryan Linden instantly lost his nerve and said guiltily, "Fine! I shouldn’t have embezzled the company’s money! But I was trying my best to pay it back. Who knew my luck would be so bad! It’s not like our company is hurting for that little bit of money."
"Do you hear yourself right now?" Caleb Summers looked at Ryan Linden and said, "What, just because your last name is Linden, all the company’s money is yours to take? You can just squander it as you please? There are a lot of people with the last name Linden in this world! It’s only because Ethan treats you like family! If it were me, I would have kicked you out of the company a long time ago, understand?"
Caleb Summers knew there were some things that were awkward for Nathan Fawcett to say, so he didn’t mind playing the bad guy.
Victor Linden looked at Nathan Fawcett. "Ethan, I know he was in the wrong. I’m willing to sell our family’s current house to pay back the company’s money, as long as you don’t kick Ryan out."
Caleb Summers was a bit stunned to hear this. "That’s the house your old man left you. You’re really willing to sell it?"
Victor Linden said, "My son was a disappointment and did something like this. We will absolutely pay back the money he owes; we won’t shirk our responsibility. I’ve already scolded him. I just hope you won’t kick him out of the company. He’ll definitely straighten up and won’t be like this again."
Anne Sutton, who had been sitting to the side, glanced at Nathan Fawcett. Seeing that he remained silent, she said, "Are you really planning to sell the house, or are you just trying to pull a sob story on Ethan Linden? You know he would never agree to let you sell the house. So now you’re trying to get out of paying the money back *and* stay in the company, is that it?"
’What a brilliant scheme.’
The moment Anne Sutton spoke, Ryan Linden glared at her.
He looked at Anne Sutton, furious. ’Sooner or later, I’m going to teach this woman a lesson!’
Ryan Linden said, "This is Linden Family business. It’s not your place to speak."
Caleb Summers firmly took Anne Sutton’s side. "My sis-in-law is with Ethan, so of course she has the right to speak! Not only that, but one day she’ll be the Linden Family’s Head’s Wife!"
The words "Family Head’s Wife" made Anne Sutton freeze.
She knew that because of her past association with Nathan Fawcett, her identity was well-known. Anyone who did the slightest bit of digging would be dead set against her being with Ethan Linden.
For Caleb Summers to say something like that was simply unthinkable.
