Soon, the attention of the gathered citizens shifted toward the main entrance once again as the guards announced the arrival of the bride’s family.
The music changed, the drums becoming deeper and more ceremonial while the flutes carried a bright melody across the arena.
Everyone knew that the family of Goddess Yamuna was about to arrive, and curiosity spread through the crowd almost instantly.
The members of the Surya family entered the arena one after another, but unlike the forms in which the citizens might have imagined them, they had chosen to manifest in human-like bodies for their visit to Bhulok.
Surya Dev in particular could not remain in his complete divine form in Bhulok for an extended period.
His true celestial form was intimately connected to the cosmic function he performed, and remaining away from Surya Lok for too long while maintaining that form could disturb the balance that depended upon him.
If he exceeded the limits placed upon his descent, the consequences would not merely affect him.
They could have repercussions far beyond Bhulok.
Therefore, for the wedding, Surya Dev had taken a human constitution, as had the members of his family accompanying him.
Their divine nature had not disappeared, of course. It was simply concealed beneath forms that the mortal world could safely perceive.
Even so, the moment they entered, the atmosphere of the arena changed.
The citizens began whispering excitedly.
"That is Surya Dev’s family."
"Look, they have arrived!"
"Then Goddess Yamuna must be coming soon!"
People bowed respectfully as the divine family passed through the entrance.
Even in their human forms, there was something unmistakably regal about them.
Surya Dev carried himself with the dignity of a king whose presence seemed to command attention without effort, while Sandhya and Chaya walked beside him with the grace expected of divine beings.
Shani followed with his characteristic solemnity, while the other members of the family remained close.
The citizens could not see the overwhelming divinity that surrounded them, but they could still sense that these were no ordinary guests.
Then another familiar figure appeared among them.
Karna.
Devara had deliberately left him behind in Surya Lok when he departed for the wedding preparations.
Since Karna was Yami’s brother, Devara had wanted him to remain with her family and accompany them to the ceremony rather than arriving separately with Devara’s own party.
Karna therefore entered alongside the family of Surya, dressed appropriately for the occasion.
The moment he stepped into the arena, his eyes immediately searched for Devara.
He soon spotted him seated before the sacred fire.
A smile appeared on Karna’s face.
Devara noticed him as well and returned the smile.
There was no need for words between the two companions.
Devara already knew that Karna had come exactly where he was supposed to be, standing with his sister and their family on this important day.
The citizens, meanwhile, continued watching the procession with growing excitement.
They had already witnessed their king’s arrival.
They had seen Ganga and Bhudevi, the mothers of their king.
Now the family of Surya Dev had entered.
And the anticipation throughout the arena reached another level.
Because if the bride’s family had arrived, there was only one person everyone was waiting to see.
Goddess Yamuna.
As Surya Dev and his family entered farther into the royal arena, their attention suddenly shifted toward one seemingly empty corner of the gathering.
To the mortal citizens standing nearby, there was nothing there except a few decorated pillars and the soft glow of ceremonial lamps.
But the divine family knew better.
The Trimurtis and their wives were standing there.
Their divine forms remained concealed from the mortal eyes, just as they had chosen earlier.
Surya Dev immediately understood the reason.
If they had deliberately hidden their presence from the people of Trivenivrata, then revealing them now would defeat the very purpose of their concealment.
There was therefore no need to expose their presence merely because the divine family had arrived.
Surya Dev paused for a moment and respectfully bowed his head toward the seemingly empty corner.
Sandhya, Chaya, Shani and the others followed his gesture, offering their silent greetings as well.
Though there were no words exchanged and no visible response for the mortals around them, the gods understood one another perfectly.
Vishnu and Shiva returned the greeting subtly, while Brahma smiled calmly.
Lakshmi, Parvati and Saraswati watched the Surya family with warmth.
It was an amusing sight in its own way.
Two groups of divine beings were respectfully greeting one another in the middle of a crowded royal arena while the ordinary citizens around them remained completely unaware that some of the most powerful beings in existence were standing only a short distance away.
Once the greeting was exchanged, Sandhya turned toward Chaya.
"We should go and see Yami,"
She said softly.
"She must be getting ready by now."
Chaya immediately nodded.
"Yes. I want to see her before she comes here."
The wives of Yama and Shani joined them as well.
There was no reason for them to remain among the men while Yami was preparing for her wedding, and they were far too curious to miss the opportunity to see how the bride was being dressed.
Shani’s wives exchanged amused looks as they began walking away.
"I wonder how nervous she is," one of them remarked.
Sandhya smiled.
"Knowing Yami, she will probably pretend she is perfectly calm."
Chaya laughed softly.
"And fail miserably."
The women continued toward the royal chambers, accompanied by the other female members of the Surya family.
Their conversation gradually faded as they left the arena, their destination being the chamber where Yami was being prepared for the wedding.
Behind them, Surya Dev remained with the others, his eyes eventually turning toward the ceremonial stage where Devara was waiting.
The sacred fire continued to burn.
The musicians had begun another soft ceremonial melody.
And somewhere within the palace, his daughter was being prepared to leave the life she had known and walk toward the man she had chosen herself.
When the ladies of Surya Dev’s family finally reached the chamber where Yami was being prepared, Sandhya gently knocked on the door before opening it.
The moment the door swung inward, however, all of them stopped in the doorway.
Yami was standing before the large mirror, and for a few seconds none of them said anything.
She was dressed in a beautiful water-blue saree, the fabric flowing gracefully around her body like a quiet stretch of sacred water.
Tiny shimmering patterns had been woven throughout the saree, catching the light whenever she moved.
Under the glow of the lamps, those delicate reflections seemed almost like sunlight dancing across the surface of a river.
The effect was especially striking because of Yami’s divine nature.
The blue of the saree seemed to belong to her rather than merely being something she was wearing, as though a piece of the Yamuna itself had been turned into silk and wrapped around her.
Her jewelry was equally elegant, carefully chosen to complement the saree without overwhelming it.
Her hair had been arranged beautifully, with delicate ornaments woven through it, while small jewels adorned her forehead and ears.
Yet despite all the effort that had gone into preparing her, it was her expression that caught the attention of the women most.
Yami looked radiant.
The moment she noticed who had entered, her face brightened.
"Mother!"
She immediately turned away from the mirror and hurried toward Sandhya and Chaya.
Sandhya’s face broke into a proud smile as she opened her arms, and Yami threw herself into the embrace.
Chaya joined them a moment later, wrapping her arms around her daughter as well.
"My little girl,"
Sandhya whispered, holding her tightly.
Yami laughed softly against her mother’s shoulder.
"I thought you were still in the arena."
"We were,"
Chaya replied, gently touching Yami’s hair.
"But we could not possibly stay there when you were here getting ready."
The wives of Yama and Shani gathered around them, smiling as they looked at Yami.
One of them stepped closer and looked her over from head to toe.
"Just look at you. We leave you alone for a little while and suddenly you are ready to become a bride."
Yami’s cheeks immediately gained a faint blush.
"Don’t start."
That only made the women laugh.
Another sister-in-law gently adjusted one of the ornaments near Yami’s shoulder.
"The saree suits you perfectly."
Yami looked down at herself for a moment, then back toward the women with a slightly nervous smile.
"Do I really look all right?"
Sandhya immediately held her daughter’s face between her hands.
"You look beautiful."
Chaya smiled beside her.
"More importantly, you look happy."
Yami’s expression softened.
Her eyes instinctively moved toward the chamber door, beyond which lay the path to the royal arena and the man waiting there.
Devara.
Just thinking of him made her smile again.
The women noticed.
Of course they noticed.
One of her sister-in-laws exchanged a knowing look with another, and Yami immediately realized what they were thinking.
"Don’t you dare,"
She warned, though the smile on her face made the warning completely ineffective.
The women burst into laughter again, surrounding the bride as they admired her attire and helped make the final adjustments.
For a few precious moments, Yami simply stood among the women of her family, surrounded by affection and laughter.
Soon she would walk into the arena.
Soon she would stand beside Devara before the sacred fire.
And before the gathered citizens, gods and their families, she would finally become his wife.
