Devara slowly moved his hand closer toward the darkness barrier surrounding Kandarpaasura.
The moment the tiny black hole approached it, the reaction became much stronger.
The darkness began streaming toward it.
What had initially looked like thin wisps of smoke now became thick currents of black energy, twisting violently through the air before being dragged into the tiny singularity at Devara’s fingertip.
The barrier surrounding Kandarpaasura started shrinking as more and more of its darkness was pulled away.
But Devara soon noticed something else.
The air around them had begun to move.
Loose pieces of cloth fluttered toward his hand.
Dust and small fragments from the ceremonial floor began sliding across the ground.
Even the weapons of some nearby Devas were being pulled slightly in his direction.
Devara immediately realized what was happening.
"Everyone, move away from me!"
The Devas looked toward him.
"Get away from this area! Now!"
There was no hesitation this time.
Indra immediately ordered the celestial warriors to retreat, while the other gods moved farther away from the growing gravitational pull.
Even those who had been attacking Kandarpaasura’s barrier abandoned their positions and created distance.
Devara remained where he was, carefully keeping the black hole suspended at his fingertip.
"Stay back!"
The farther the others moved, the easier it became for him to control the ability without risking anyone being caught in its pull.
The darkness continued pouring into the black hole.
Then something changed.
Kandarpaasura’s eyes suddenly opened.
For the first time since he had begun his meditation, his calm expression disappeared.
He could feel it.
Something was interfering with his darkness.
His head slowly lifted as he looked around.
The barrier surrounding him had begun to shrink, its black energy being dragged away despite his attempts to maintain control over it.
"What..."
His eyes widened.
Then he saw it.
A tiny black sphere, barely larger than a pea, floated at the tip of someone’s finger.
It was pulling his darkness toward itself.
Kandarpaasura stared at it in disbelief.
"Impossible."
He had never seen his darkness behave this way.
It wasn’t being dispelled.
It wasn’t being destroyed.
It was being consumed.
His gaze immediately moved through the crowd, searching for whoever was responsible.
The Trimurtis, Indra, The other Devas.
None of them appeared to be controlling it.
Then his eyes stopped.
Devara.
The king stood several metres away, one hand raised toward him, his expression completely focused.
The tiny black sphere hovered steadily above his fingertip while the darkness continued flowing toward it.
Kandarpaasura’s expression changed.
"So it is you."
Devara didn’t answer.
Kandarpaasura slowly rose from his meditation.
His eyes remained fixed on the strange black sphere.
"You created that."
Devara finally looked directly at him.
"I did."
Kandarpaasura stared at the black hole again.
For the first time since entering Surya Lok, genuine uncertainty appeared in his eyes.
His darkness had always been something he considered absolute.
Something that could swallow light, suppress divine power and cover entire realms.
Yet this tiny black point was pulling it away as though his greatest weapon had suddenly become nothing more than smoke in a strong wind.
Kandarpaasura’s expression hardened.
"Interesting."
The darkness around him continued disappearing.
And for the first time, Kandarpaasura understood that the man he had dismissed as a mere human was carrying a power he had never encountered before.
Kandarpaasura suddenly began to laugh.
At first, it was only a low chuckle, but it quickly grew louder, echoing through the darkened halls of Surya Lok.
The gods who had been watching him cautiously immediately became alert, wondering what had amused him when his greatest weapon was literally being pulled away into the strange black sphere at Devara’s fingertip.
Then Kandarpaasura’s body began to crack.
The sound was sharp enough to make several of the celestial warriors instinctively step back.
Devara narrowed his eyes.
"What’s happening?"
Kandarpaasura’s laughter continued.
The cracks spreading across his body weren’t wounds.
There was no blood, nor was he collapsing. Instead, his entire body seemed to be breaking apart from within, as though the form he had been wearing was no longer large enough to contain the power awakening inside him.
"I never thought I would have to use this form."
His voice had changed.
It was deeper now, carrying enough force that the surrounding darkness seemed to tremble with it.
Kandarpaasura’s muscles began expanding beneath his skin. His shoulders widened, his arms thickened and his entire frame grew several feet taller.
The ground beneath his feet cracked under the sudden increase in his weight.
The transformation continued.
His back suddenly bulged outward.
Two enormous wings erupted from behind him, spreading wide across the ceremonial hall.
They were dark and heavy, their surfaces absorbing what little light remained around them.
A long tail emerged from the base of his spine and curled behind him, ending in a sharp, pointed tip that looked capable of piercing even divine armour.
His entire body became broader and more heavily muscled, transforming him from the imposing Asura they had seen earlier into something far more monstrous.
The air around him began to tremble.
Kandarpaasura slowly raised his head.
"I waited to use this form for the day I encountered someone powerful enough to force me to reveal it."
His eyes settled on Devara.
"I simply never imagined that person would be a human."
Devara remained still.
Kandarpaasura flexed his enormous fingers as the remaining darkness gathered around his body.
"You found a way to consume my darkness."
He laughed again.
"Then I suppose I will have to give you something more difficult to consume."
Devara’s eyes remained fixed on him.
The tiny black hole continued pulling the darkness toward itself.
Kandarpaasura spread his enormous wings.
The force generated by the movement sent a powerful gust through the hall, forcing several attendants and lesser beings to shield their faces.
Yami immediately moved closer to Devara.
Karna stepped forward as well, while the gods prepared themselves for whatever came next.
Kandarpaasura looked around at them.
"You wanted to see what I was capable of?"
His newly transformed body radiated immense power.
"Then watch carefully."
He lowered his stance.
"I am no longer going to treat this as a Swayamvara."
His eyes locked onto Devara.
"Now it is a battle."
Devara slowly closed his fingers slightly around the black hole, maintaining control over it as he stared back at the transformed Asura.
"Then come asura with no brain in his head."
The two stood facing one another beneath the darkness that had swallowed Surya Lok.
One had transformed himself to unleash everything he possessed.
The other was still standing there with a tiny black sphere hovering above his fingertip.
And somehow, that tiny sphere was the thing Kandarpaasura feared most.
Just as the tension in the ceremonial hall reached its breaking point, when Devara and the transformed Kandarpaasura were standing opposite one another and every god present was preparing for the inevitable clash, a familiar voice suddenly drifted through the darkness.
"Narayana... Narayana..."
The voice wasn’t loud, yet somehow it could be heard throughout the entire realm.
Devara’s expression changed.
Several of the Devas lowered their weapons and looked toward the entrance.
Even Kandarpaasura opened his eyes fully, his enormous wings remaining spread behind him as he searched for the source of the voice.
The chanting continued.
"Narayana... Narayana..."
A moment later, a figure appeared through the darkness, walking calmly as though the chaos surrounding him was nothing more than an inconvenience.
It was Maharishi Narada.
His veena rested against his shoulder, and beside him walked his newly named daughter, Tarini, who looked around at the transformed Kandarpaasura and the darkness covering Surya Lok with considerably more curiosity than fear.
Narada looked around the hall.
"Well..."
He paused and acted as if he had just arrived.
"I seem to have arrived at an interesting time."
Tarini glanced toward him.
"You said we were coming to observe."
Narada looked at the enormous Asura.
"I was observing."
He then looked at the darkness.
"Things apparently became much more interesting while I was watching."
Despite the seriousness of the situation, a few of the Devas couldn’t help smiling at Narada’s casual arrival.
Narada walked forward, and the moment he reached the gathering, he first turned toward the Trimurtis and their consorts.
He bowed respectfully.
"My respects, Mahadev. Narayana. Brahma Dev. And my respects to Goddess Parvati, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati."
The divine beings acknowledged his greeting.
Lord Vishnu gave him a knowing smile.
"Narada, you have certainly chosen an appropriate moment to arrive."
Narada smiled.
"I have a habit of doing that, Lord."
He then turned toward Surya Dev.
"Surya Dev."
Despite his weakened condition, Surya Dev returned the greeting.
"Welcome, Maharishi."
Narada then turned toward Indra and bowed.
"Devaraja."
Indra returned the respect.
"Rishi Narada."
Narada’s eyes then travelled across the hall.
He noticed Yami standing beside Devara.
He noticed the garland around Devara’s neck.
His eyebrows rose.
"Ah."
Tarini leaned closer.
"Father?"
Narada smiled as if he knew what he is going to do.
"So the Swayamvara has already been decided."
Yami’s cheeks immediately turned pink.
Devara gave Narada a curious look as he bowed to get his blessing.
"You could say that."
Narada chuckled hearing him as blessed.
He then looked toward Kandarpaasura.
The amusement disappeared from his face.
The transformed Asura stood several feet away, his wings spread wide, his body radiating power while the darkness continued covering the realm.
Narada studied him carefully.
Then he looked toward Devara and the tiny black hole still hovering near his hand.
His eyebrows rose again.
"That is certainly something I haven’t seen you use before."
Devara glanced at the singularity.
"I’d rather not use it here."
Narada nodded in understanding.
"I can understand why."
He then looked around at the assembled gods.
"Before everyone starts tearing Surya Lok apart in an attempt to stop one Asura, perhaps we should consider whether there is another way to resolve this."
Indra frowned seeing Naradha was upto something.
"Narada, Kandarpaasura has already plunged the entire realm into darkness. He has threatened the gods. And he is preparing to permanently anchor that darkness here."
Narada nodded.
"Which is precisely why fighting him inside Surya Lok might be the worst possible decision."
The hall fell silent.
Narada slowly turned toward Kandarpaasura.
"And you, Kandarpaasura."
The Asura looked down at him.
"What?"
Narada smiled calmly.
"You came here wanting to participate in a Swayamvara."
Kandarpaasura’s expression darkened.
"And I was denied."
Narada shook his head.
"You participated at last."
He gestured toward Devara.
"And Yami made her choice."
Kandarpaasura’s fists tightened.
Narada continued before he could respond.
"You lost fair and square."
The Asura’s eyes narrowed.
Narada’s voice remained remarkably calm.
"Now you have two choices. You can accept the result and leave with whatever dignity you have left, or you can continue this conflict until Surya Lok becomes the graveyard of everyone involved."
Kandarpaasura stared at him.
For several moments, nobody moved.
Then Narada looked toward the others.
"Let us not forget why everyone came here in the first place."
His gaze settled on Yami and Devara.
"They came to witness a marriage."
He smiled faintly.
"It would be rather unfortunate if the wedding guests ended up becoming the casualties of the ceremony."
A few gods exchanged glances.
The battle that had seemed inevitable only moments earlier had suddenly been given another possible direction.
Narada had arrived at precisely the moment when words might still accomplish what weapons could not.
And for the first time since Kandarpaasura had entered Surya Lok, everyone waited to hear what he would say next.
