After Liam Sterling left, Evelyn looked over at Ronan Kendrick to ask his opinion.

"There’s still a lot of fabric in the dimension, and we don’t have any use for the silk. But if we don’t lease the land to Rhys Chase, I’m afraid things will get even harder for the base. Ronan, do you have any ideas that would be the best of both worlds?"

"What are we still missing?"

Evelyn shook her head. "We’re not missing a thing. We have everything we need for food, clothing, shelter, and travel."

Ronan took her hand. "I’ll go to Rhys Chase’s office tomorrow. I’ll discuss this with him in person."

"Okay."

—

The next evening, Ronan Kendrick went with Liam Sterling to Rhys Chase’s office. Rhys had just returned from a meeting. When he saw Ronan, he immediately shut the door.

"The moment I saw you, I knew Liam must have told you about it. It’s embarrassing, really, having to ask you for help again. If I weren’t in this position, I’d be completely carefree. But I am, which means I’m responsible for all the residents. The base is like a knife held to my neck at all times. If I make one wrong move, it’ll fall."

Rhys Chase didn’t beat around the bush. He sat down across from Ronan and got straight to the point.

"Ronan, tell me what you’re thinking."

’If the base commander weren’t Rhys Chase, Eldoria Base might not have developed so smoothly.’

’Rhys has fulfilled his duties every moment he’s been in this position. Even now, he still gets no more than five hours of sleep a day.’

Ronan knew, in all honesty, that he could never be as great as Rhys.

"Evelyn and I have discussed it. Half of the farming sector is currently empty. It hasn’t been tilled yet, but it’s an area of about five thousand mu. We’ll let you plant on it for this year. The rent will be thirty percent of the harvest. This offer is only for this year, for a total of four crop rotations."

’Rhys had initially only asked to lease one thousand mu, but how much food can you grow on a thousand mu? It was better to just lease him the full five thousand for one year. That way, they could solve the base’s food shortage in one fell swoop.’

’By this calculation, they were actually taking a loss. But as Evelyn said, everything Rhys did was for the residents of the base. There were things she couldn’t do herself, but someone else could. The least she could do was offer her support.’

Rhys was speechless for a long moment. Even Liam was stunned by Ronan’s proposal.

’He had thought Ronan brought him here today to raise their price.’

Liam pinched his thigh, hard. ’He had judged a noble man by his own petty standards.’

"Mr. Kendrick, I’m sorry."

Faced with Liam’s seemingly random apology, Ronan just smiled. "No need to apologize. I was originally planning on driving a hard bargain, but Evelyn wouldn’t let me."

Liam... ’Even at a time like this, he just has to show off how much he loves his wife. Classic Ronan.’

"Ronan, please thank Evelyn for me. Everyone in the base owes you both their thanks."

"Evelyn said there’s no need to thank her. She’s not that noble—she just doesn’t want to see humanity go extinct."

Rhys...

"I remember Evelyn likes Gold. We’ve dug up quite a bit from the mining sector. I had it put in the warehouse; you can go pick it up tonight."

"No need. We still have plenty in our dimension. Evelyn says any more won’t fit in her coffin, so we should leave it for someone else."

"In her coffin? What do you mean?" Rhys looked completely baffled.

"As burial goods," Ronan said calmly. "It’s not like there’s anywhere to spend it."

"Ahem..." Rhys coughed. "You two are quite a pair." ’Worrying about what happens after you die while you’re still alive.’

’And the way Ronan kept saying "Evelyn says this" and "Evelyn says that"... he was a total wife-worshipper.’

"Even if you don’t want it, I have to give it," Rhys insisted. "Relationships are a two-way street. That’s how they’re maintained."
