Chapter 75 Scared
Chapter 75: Chapter 75 Scared
Daisy typed again, her fingers moving slowly. Why?
She paused for a moment, her thumb hovering over the screen, before she finally typed the word that had been burning in her mind since he had spoken.
Why?
Her hands were still trembling slightly, she forced them to be still, pressing her palms flat against her thighs for a moment before lifting the phone again.
She held it out to him, her dark eyes curious and searching, her head tilted slightly to the side like a bird studying something new and unfamiliar. She wanted to know why he had cared enough to take her to the clinic.
Why?
Alessio glanced at the screen. His green eyes flickered for a moment, a brief crack in his usual unreadable mask and then he looked at her with his expressionless face. The same cold, distant look he always wore.
"Because you hit my car," he said, his voice flat and matter-of-fact.
Daisy blinked.
She stared at him, her mind stumbling over his words like a child learning to walk. You hit my car? What does that mean? She hit his car? Or his car hit her?
She contemplated inwardly, her brow furrowing as she tried to make sense of his logic.
Her lips twitched. Her shoulders shook. She bit her lip, trying to hold it in but a small sound escaped her anyway. A soft, breathy chuckle that seemed to surprise even her.
Alessio raised an eyebrow. "What?"
However, his heart almost leaped out of his throat hearing her breathy chuckle. The sound was so unexpected that it caught him completely off guard.
Her laugh was beautiful..
Daisy shook her head quickly, still biting her lip to suppress the smile threatening to break free. Her eyes were bright with amusement, the fear that had clouded them earlier slowly fading away. She typed on her phone, her fingers moving faster now, the words tumbling out in a rush.
I hit your car?
"Yes," Alessio said, his voice still flat.
I was running. I was scared. I wasn’t looking where I was going.
"And you ran into my car," Alessio repeated, stating the obvious with that same deadpan delivery.
Daisy nodded, her cheeks flushing a soft pink. She typed again, her fingers moving with quick, apologetic strokes.
I am sorry. I didn’t see you.
"You didn’t see a whole car?" Alessio asked, one eyebrow rising just a fraction higher. It was the most expression he had shown all night.
Daisy’s face turned red. She typed frantically, her thumbs nearly tripping over each other.
It was dark! And I was scared! I was looking behind me, not in front!
Alessio looked at her. His face was still expressionless, but there was something in his eyes now...amusement . His lips stayed in a flat line but the corners of his eyes softened just a fraction like ice beginning to melt at the edges.
"So you crashed into my car because you weren’t looking," he said slowly, as if testing the words.
Yes.
"And you hurt yourself because you weren’t looking."
Yes.
"And now you are sitting in my car because you weren’t looking."
Daisy stared at him. Is he teasing her? With his expressionless face, it was hard to tell. But there was a glint in his green eyes, something that made her heart flutter and her stomach flip. She searched his face for any sign of mockery but found none. Just that faint, barely-there warmth.
She laughed silently, her shoulders shaking with the effort of containing the sound. She covered her face with her hands, peeking through her fingers at him like a child playing hide and seek.
You are so mean.
"I am just being honest," he said, his focus returning to the road ahead. But she noticed the way his lips pressed together, as if he was holding back something. A smile, perhaps.
Daisy shook her head, a smile still playing on her lips. She typed, her fingers moving with renewed energy.
Fine. You are honest. And I am the idiot who ran into your car.
Alessio’s lips twitched. Just barely, but she caught it. "I didn’t say you were an idiot."
Your face said it.
"My face always looks like this," he said, his voice completely deadpan.
Daisy looked at him. At his expressionless face. At his cold green eyes, hard line of his jaw that seemed carved from stone. He looked like an icy statue, a work of art that had never learned to smile.
She typed, her smile widening.
That is true. You always look like you are judging everyone.
Alessio glanced at the screen. Then at her. His green eyes met hers, and something passed between them. Something she couldn’t name. "I don’t judge everyone," he said.
Just me?
"Just you."
Daisy’s heart skipped.
She stared at him, her breath caught in her throat.
Just you.
She didn’t know what to make of them. She didn’t know what to make of him.
Alessio looked at her. His expression did not change, but his eyes held hers for a moment longer than necessary.
"I am joking," he said.
Daisy let out a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. She laughed silently, her head falling back against the seat, her whole body relaxing.
You are very funny.
Alessio said nothing. His green eyes returned to the road but she caught the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth.
After this, no one spoke.
There was silence between them, but it was not uncomfortable. It was warm and peaceful. Daisy watched the city lights blur past the window, the golden and white streaks painting patterns across the glass. Her bandaged palms rested in her lap.
Finally, they reached the Evermont mansion.
The gates loomed ahead, tall and dark and imposing. The iron bars were cold and dark, like the family that lived within. The house behind them was silent, its windows dark and empty, as if the whole place was holding its breath.
Daisy felt her stomach tighten with anxiety. The warmth that had filled her moments before drained away, replaced by cold dread.
Alessio stopped the car. He turned off the engine and looked at her.
Daisy looked back at him. Her eyes were wide, her lower lip caught between her teeth.
