Chapter 74: Chapter 74 Are you her husband?
Alessio said simply. "Fell."
Dr. Penelope looked at Daisy’s scraped palms and bleeding knees. "Fell? That looks like more than a fall. Did you get hit by a car?"
Daisy shook her head quickly. She pointed at herself, then made a running motion with her hands, then pointed at the ground.
Alessio repeated, his voice sharp. "A car? Did a car hit you?"
Daisy shook her head again. She made the running motion again, then pointed at her scraped knees.
I fell while running. I tripped.
Dr. Penelope nodded, noticing this girl was mute. "Okay, let’s get you cleaned up. Follow me."
She led them to a small examination room. The room was warm and softly lit, with a comfortable bed and clean white sheets. Alessio carried Daisy inside and set her down gently on the examination table. Her knees were still bleeding, the scrapes raw and painful.
Daisy looked up at Alessio. She gestured thank you, her hands moving softly.
Alessio nodded. He stepped back and leaned against the wall, his arms crossed over his chest. His green eyes never left her face.
Dr. Penelope started cleaning Daisy’s knees, her movements gentle and efficient. "This might sting a little," she said.
Daisy winced as the antiseptic touched her skin. She closed her eyes and bit her lip to keep from making a sound. Her hands gripped the edge of the table.
Dr. Penelope glanced up at Alessio. "Are you her husband?"
Daisy’s eyes shot open. Her face turned bright red. She shook her head frantically, her hands waving in the air.
No. No. Not husband. Just friend.
Dr. Penelope smiled. "Just friend?"
Daisy’s blush deepened. She looked at Alessio, then quickly looked away. She could feel the heat radiating from her cheeks.
Alessio’s expression did not change. "Just make sure she is okay," he said.
Dr. Penelope laughed. "She will be fine. Just some scrapes and bruises. I will bandage her up, and she will be good as new."
Daisy let out a small sigh of relief. Her shoulders relaxed slightly.
Dr. Penelope cleaned and bandaged her palms and knees. She checked her wrists and ankles for any sprains. She asked questions, and Daisy answered with nods and head shakes.
When she was finished, Dr. Penelope stepped back. "Okay, all done. Take it easy for a few days. No running."
Daisy nodded.
Dr. Penelope looked at Alessio. "She needs to rest. Keep her off her feet."
Alessio nodded. He walked forward and looked at Daisy. "Can you walk?"
Daisy stood up slowly. Her knees were stiff, but they held her weight. She nodded.
Alessio opened the door. "Come. I will take you home."
Daisy followed him out of the room. She walked slowly, her knees still aching, her bandaged palms held carefully at her sides.
As they reached the door, Alessio stopped. He looked at her condition. At the way she was limping, favoring her left knee. At the way her hands were still trembling slightly. At the way her shoulders were hunched with exhaustion.
He made another decision.
He bent down and scooped her into his arms again.
Daisy’s eyes widened. She looked up at him, her mouth open.
What are you doing? I can walk.
She gestured, her hands moving in protest. Her cheeks were already pink.
"You cannot walk properly," Alessio said. "You are limping."
I am fine. I can—
Alessio did not listen.
Daisy sighed and stopped struggling. She looked up at him, her face still flushed. The warmth of his body seeped into hers, and she felt her heartbeat slow.
You are annoying.
Alessio said nothing.
He carried her out of the clinic.
Daisy hesitated. She was still in his arms, her body pressed against his. She looked at his face, then down at his chest. His suit was soft against her cheek, and beneath it, she could feel the hard planes of his muscles. He was strong, solid, and warm.
She slowly placed her head on his chest.
The fabric of his suit was smooth against her skin. She could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, slow and strong. She could feel the warmth of his body seeping through the layers of fabric, comforting and safe.
And his smell...
He smelled like something woodsy and clean with a hint of spice. Like pine forests and winter nights and something that made her want to breathe deeper.
She closed her eyes and let herself sink into the warmth of him.
Anyway, this guy didn’t listen to her. Very stubborn big guy!
She felt his arms tighten around her, just slightly, as he adjusted his hold. She felt his chest rise and fall with each breath.
Alessio looked down at her. At the top of her head, at the soft caramel hair that smelled like sweet flowers. She had relaxed against him, her body no longer trembling, her beautiful eyes were closed, her lashes dark against her cheeks.
He said nothing. He just carried her to the car.
He opened the passenger door and gently set her down on the seat. He reached over and buckled her seatbelt, his hands brushing against her waist. The touch was light, barely there, but it sent a shiver through her.
Daisy’s breath caught.
He closed the door and walked around to the driver’s side.
He got in and started the engine.
They drove in silence for a while, the city lights blurring past the window. The soft glow of streetlights painted gold and silver patterns across her face.
Daisy’s hands were still trembling. She looked down at her bandaged palms. She thought about the dark car and the fear that had gripped her heart.
She typed on her phone.
Thank you. For everything. For the clinic. For carrying me. For not leaving me alone.
She held out the screen.
Alessio glanced at it. His green eyes moved across the words, and something shifted in his expression.
"I was not going to leave you alone," he said.
Daisy typed again, her fingers moving slowly. Why?
