Chapter 420: Chapter 168: The Might of the Magic Crystal Cannon
After their conversation, Hall immediately dispatched someone to the Royal Court to request aid.
He didn’t know if the Royal Court could spare anyone at the moment, but he had to ask for help regardless.
If for no other reason, Hall’s own food supplies were nearly gone. At the very least, the Royal Court should be able to send some provisions, right?
Just as Hall finished his arrangements and was about to make camp, the ground suddenly began to tremble. A Centaur galloped toward them from the distance in a great panic.
"Sir! Bad news! A human army is approaching from the south!"
A human army?
"They’re coming here? How do they know where we are?" Hall asked in confusion.
When Hall had left the city, some Griffin Knights had indeed spotted his movements, but that was a day ago.
They had been on the move since then, so how could the enemy pinpoint their location?
"Who cares why? It’s almost dark. The humans are attacking now, so maybe they spotted us during the night," Chief Moer guessed.
"How many humans are coming?" Chief Moer asked.
"About two or three thousand."
"Ha!"
Chief Moer couldn’t help but laugh.
"Look at this. The Beastman Empire has truly fallen. In my ancestors’ time, never mind two or three thousand human Soldiers—even twenty or thirty thousand on the battlefield would have been nothing to us!"
Hall couldn’t be bothered to explain the difference between the past and the present to Moer. Instead, he pondered why the human force was so small.
"Three thousand men..."
"You’re hesitating over three thousand men? Are we fighting or not? Give me a straight answer, boy! If you’re this scared of three thousand humans, I doubt you have any hope of handling that demonic tide."
Chief Moer again looked as if he was about to break away from the group.
"Wait!"
Suddenly, a tremor ran through Hall’s body.
"Did you hear that?" Hall said.
"Hear what?" Chief Moer asked, puzzled.
"If you’re scared, just..."
"Look at the sky! Magic Balls!"
"Damn it, Magic Crystal Cannons! Get out of the way! Move!"
Hall shouted as he watched the Magic Energy Balls in the sky.
Hearing this, Chief Moer also noticed something was wrong.
Dozens of Magic Crystal Balls, large and small, were flying toward them from the distant sky.
The source of these Energy Balls was a small hill not far away.
If one looked closely, they could see human banners planted on that hill.
"So fast!"
’Didn’t we just spot them?’
Hall looked at the Centaur scout, but the Centaur Warrior wore an innocent expression.
Then again, it wasn’t surprising that Magic Crystal Cannons could be this effective when they had the high ground.
"Spread out! Quickly, spread out!"
Hall looked back at his densely packed army. If they took a direct hit from those things, he could forget about holding his ground. With a quarter of his army vaporized, how could they possibly fight?
Hearing Hall’s warning, the Soldiers immediately scattered in all directions.
But the attack was too sudden. No one was prepared, and an orderly retreat was nothing more than a pipe dream.
The troops collided with each other, their formations dissolving into chaos.
"Sir, run! A Magic Crystal Cannonball is heading your way!"
A massive fluctuation of energy surged from behind him, and Hall’s heart pounded with terror.
’Is this how I die?’
"Heh!"
Hall did not die.
He heard a violent explosion, followed by the agonized cries of the Mountain Rock Bear Race.
Looking back, he saw a massive wooden wall behind him. There was a hole in the middle of it, and looking down from the hole, he could see Chief Moer lying on the ground.
Meanwhile, the roar of Magic Crystal Cannons echoed from all around.
"Moer! Are you alright?"
Honestly, Hall was a little moved. He never expected this stupid bear to be so capable in a crisis.
Chief Moer spat out a mouthful of blood, then wiped the stains from the corner of his mouth.
"I’m fine. What was that? How is it so powerful?"
When the Mountain Rock Bear Race retreated into the mountains, Magic Crystal Cannons had not yet become widespread.
"Damn it! My people!"
Chief Moer quickly looked behind him.
Screams echoed from all directions. The entire Beastman formation had descended into chaos.
Although Hall’s reaction had been swift, it was still too late. The enemy was just too fast.
Of the dozen or so cannonballs, at least nine had found their mark.
The army’s formation was in a state of utter chaos.
At that moment, the voice from afar rang out again—it was impossible to tell if it was a gospel from the Beast God or a whisper from a devil.
"Spread out! Everyone, spread out!"
...
Robson had a clear view of the distant Beastman Army’s movements.
The Magic Crystal Cannons had once again proven just how powerful they were. The Beastmen no longer had anything resembling a formation; their army was in complete disarray.
This was especially true with the addition of the Gauss Clan’s modified carriages.
This new product, recently developed for Robson by the Gauss Clan, could not only transport a Magic Crystal Cannon, but its wheels could be detached, allowing the cannon to be used on the spot. It had been completely transformed into field artillery.
However...
Robson recalled the scene from moments ago: a giant wooden wall had blocked a Magic Crystal Cannonball.
’Is that Druid Magic?’
Robson had read in books that some magical beasts and races possessed a natural affinity for nature, allowing them to become Druids—like the Bear Race before him, or the elves of the north.
Druid Magic, to put it simply, was the manipulation of living plants.
Humans generally excelled in their affinity for combat aura or the five basic elements, but their affinity for nature was less remarkable. In his entire career, Robson had only seen a few...
’Druids...’ Hearing the name, Robson couldn’t help but think of the most basic Druid Magic: Growth.
’Isn’t that practically made for my, Lord Robson’s, farmlands?’
’An Earth and Wood Mage, and an agricultural Druid... a perfect match!’
"Sir, we’ve fired all three volleys from the Magic Crystal Cannons."
As Robson was lost in thought, his adjutant, Orc, came to remind him.
Robson nodded and looked out at the battlefield.
After several rounds of cannon fire, the Beastman Army had scattered. Both the Bear Race and the Centaurs were now fleeing in all directions, terrified that if they stayed in a dense group, the next cannonball would land on them.
No matter how elite these Beastmen were, in the face of Heavy Cavalry, Soldiers who had lost their formation were no different from paper dolls! Armor weighing hundreds of pounds was no joke.
Robson swung himself onto his horse and looked at Valentino and Claude.
"It’s time to prepare. First Regiment, lead the charge!"
"Fengman Knight Order! Prepare!"
"Cavalry Team! Everyone, couch your lances! Move it!"
The orders given, Valentino and Claude split off, shouting their commands.
The sound of horns, calling the entire army to order, began to rise.
Seeing the army had more or less gathered, Robson rode to the front of the formation and raised his Knight’s Sword.
"For the Kingdom! For the Lord of Dawn!"
"Charge!"
"For the Kingdom! For the Lord of Dawn!"
With a thunderous roar, nearly a thousand Heavy Cavalry surged down from the peak.
