The Hollow Gospel - Pacts, Marks and Gifts
HG-03: PACTS, MARKS AND GIFTS THE HOLLOW GOSPEL CODEX
Marked members of the Blinded Crown receive their supernatural abilities through a pact associated with the Archon known as Vhazroth.
The Order has performed this rite for generations and preserves extensive records of its results. Those records explain much about the procedure and its consequences, yet they do not reveal why the pact accepts one candidate and kills another.
The Blinded Crown therefore treats the pact as an established practice whose deeper mechanism remains unresolved.
GRAVEWATCH
The standard Vhazroth pact is conducted at Gravewatch. Surviving the rite marks the transition from Initiate to Pilgrim, while completion of training alone does not grant marked rank.
Candidates receive instruction about the danger beforehand and may refuse until the ceremony begins. Refusal carries no punishment and does not prevent a member from seeking unmarked service within the Order. Once the rite has started, the process cannot be safely interrupted.
Recent records in the present era place survival at approximately one candidate in six. This is an institutional average rather than a fixed rule, and individual cohorts vary considerably.
Medical screening and preparation can reduce ordinary procedural risks, but neither allows the Order to predict whether Vhazroth will accept a candidate.
THE RITE
Gravewatch contains a main hall for waiting candidates and a pact chamber below. The lower chamber holds a stone slab together with the apparatus used during the ceremony.
After preparation is complete, candidates wear plain linen and approach the chamber without restraint. Order records describe the ritual instruments alongside the medical procedure and the physical reactions observed during previous attempts, although the supernatural function of several components remains uncertain.
Survivors often remember only fragments. Accounts mention darkness or smoke, sometimes accompanied by the sensation of an immense presence becoming aware of the candidate. A vast green eye appears often enough in surviving testimony to be included in Order instruction, but its nature is unknown. The Order cannot tell whether it represents Vhazroth itself or a ritual vision produced by a mind trying to interpret something beyond ordinary perception.
No standard account describes an ordinary conversation with Vhazroth. Whatever judgment occurs during the rite is not explained to the candidate.
ACCEPTANCE AND REJECTION
A successful pact permanently destroys sight in one eye while leaving the eye physically present. This outcome is universal among known Vhazroth bearers, and the candidate does not knowingly choose which eye will be taken. The Order has no procedure capable of determining the side beforehand.
Pact rejection is usually fatal, though its outward appearance varies considerably. Some candidates convulse or suffer obvious physical collapse. Others deteriorate with comparatively little visible trauma, and apparent early success does not guarantee survival.
Medical personnel remain present to stabilize candidates where possible, although no reliable intervention is known to reverse true rejection.
THE MARK
Every surviving bearer develops a permanent supernatural mark on the same side as the blinded eye. Two forms are recognized by current Order doctrine.
EYE MARK
For some gifts, the mark occupies the blinded eye itself. The eye remains physically present but cannot see.
Because the mark can identify the bearer as something more than an ordinary wounded traveler, it is concealed outside secure Order environments.
HAND MARK
Other gifts place the mark across the back of the hand on the same side as the blinded eye. The eye remains blind but carries no visible supernatural mark, so covering it is not required for secrecy.
The Order recognizes a connection between mark placement and the gift, but cannot predict which form will appear before the pact.
ACTIVATION
A bearer engages the pact deliberately through the mark. For an eye mark, the blind marked eye serves as the point of focus. A hand marked bearer uses the marked hand in the same manner, and active engagement causes the mark to glow green.
The glow shows that the pact is in use without revealing the exact nature or strength of the gift, much less what the bearer intends to affect. A bright eye mark can remain visible through light covering, which complicates concealment during active use.
The marked organ often has a practical relationship with the gift. Some abilities depend on visual conditions, while others work through contact with the marked hand. These patterns guide training, but the Order does not treat them as universal rules.
THE GIFT
A successful pact grants one supernatural gift, but neither the candidate nor the Blinded Crown chooses what form it takes.
The ability may become apparent soon after Gravewatch or emerge later during recovery. A new mark therefore confirms survival without telling the Order exactly what the new Pilgrim can do.
Initial testing is deliberately cautious. An unfamiliar gift may depend on contact or distance, and its behavior can change with conditions that are not obvious during the first attempt. Instructors expand testing only as the bearer and medical staff begin to understand both the effect and its consequences.
No two living Vhazroth bearers are known to possess the same gift at the same time. Records also show that a gift can appear again after an earlier bearer is gone, although the Order has never identified a predictable cycle or method of succession, and no complete catalogue of possible gifts is known.
THE COST OF USE
Using a gift places strain on the bearer. General exhaustion is common, while the more serious consequences vary according to the individual pact.
A supernatural effect and its physical cost do not have to resemble one another. An ability may interfere with balance or damage the nervous system, while another may disrupt temperature regulation or consume something the body cannot quickly replace.
Learning a new gift therefore requires careful observation of the bearer as well as the effect itself. Physicians and instructors document warning signs and recovery needs, then determine when continued use becomes dangerous.
Repeated overuse can leave permanent consequences. Chronic symptoms may impair fine control or require medical restrictions. In severe cases, a previous field assignment may become unsafe even when the bearer retains the gift and rank. Experience can improve efficiency and judgment without removing the underlying cost.
MASTERY
Pact gifts do not advance through formal numbered levels or grades of supernatural power. The basic gift remains recognizable throughout the bearer’s career.
Training develops control and efficiency while exposing the operative to situations that cannot be reproduced perfectly inside Order facilities. A novice may spend far more strength than necessary, while an experienced bearer can often reach the same result with better timing or more precise application.
Improvement may extend usable range where the gift permits it. Finer control and new applications can also emerge when they follow logically from the original ability. The value of each development depends on the gift rather than on a universal progression model.
Large output is not always the most difficult use. Holding an effect steady or limiting it to the intended target may require greater skill than releasing maximum force, especially when the bearer must stop at an exact moment.
Ordinary training deepens control over the gift already present. It does not grant unrelated supernatural abilities.
MARK AND GIFT
Mark placement provides useful clues about how a gift operates without explaining the whole ability.
Hand marks often correspond to gifts in which contact or the marked limb matters. Eye marks frequently relate to visual conditions or use the marked eye as the point through which the bearer focuses the pact.
The pattern is reliable enough to inform early testing but incomplete enough that instructors avoid assuming a new gift’s function from the mark alone. Observation begins under simple conditions and expands as its behavior becomes clearer.
WHAT THE ORDER KNOWS
Centuries of records allow the Blinded Crown to state some facts with confidence. The standard pact is associated with Vhazroth, and every successful bearer loses sight in one eye while developing the mark on the same side. A gift emerges afterward and imposes a personal cost when used.
Important questions remain unresolved. The Order cannot predict who will survive or which side will be blinded. It cannot choose the gift or explain why a particular candidate receives a particular ability, while the eventual limits of a new gift become clear only through experience.
Despite the consistency of its observable results, the exact supernatural mechanism behind Gravewatch remains unknown.
DOCTRINAL NOTE
Order training treats pact use as a medical and operational responsibility as much as a supernatural advantage. Bearers are taught to understand the effect they produce together with the warning signs of harmful use, then judge whether further use threatens the mission or their own survival.
Restraint forms part of that training. Experienced marked members are expected to know their limits well enough to decide when those limits can be approached and when crossing them would create a greater problem than the one they were sent to solve.
