Medical Center

"Dr. Duncan, I hope you can keep this under wraps…"

Dr. Hibbert, caught up in the heat of his confession, instantly regretted spilling his private struggles. Totally human reaction— if word got out, his reputation, family, and career would be toast. He wanted to slap himself silly.

"Of course," Adam said, picking up on Hibbert's shift in vibe and easing him down. "I'm a doctor. I'll run a check-up for you in a bit, and all this stays protected under patient confidentiality."

"Phew." Hibbert relaxed, grateful. "Thanks for understanding, Dr. Duncan." Then, a flicker of worry hit him. "Wait—will this mess with transferring the beneficial bacteria to my wife?"

"That's exactly why I wanted to talk," Adam replied, masking his gossip-loving side with a pro-doctor excuse. "We'll know more after the tests."

"Damn it!" Hibbert's face paled.

Before his wife could even chime in, he meekly trailed Adam for the check-up.

"It's safe to proceed with the transplant," Adam announced after the results came in.

"Thank God!" Hibbert exclaimed. "I couldn't forgive myself otherwise—my daughter wouldn't either."

"It won't affect the transplant," Adam clarified, "but your liver and kidney functions? They've taken a hit."

"Am I poisoned?" Hibbert interrupted, wide-eyed.

"Sort of," Adam nodded. "But it's self-inflicted."

"You mean…" Hibbert trailed off, catching on, his face flushing with embarrassment.

"Yup," Adam said. "Medications have side effects—overdoing energy boosters trashes your liver and kidneys. Catch it early, stop now, and you're fine. Let it drag on, though? You're looking at serious organ issues. Big trouble."

"Oh, got it." Hibbert exhaled again, relieved. Still fixable.

"You should ditch those energy meds for good," Adam advised.

"I will," Hibbert nodded.

Adam shook his head internally. Hibbert's eyes screamed he wasn't taking it seriously. No surprise—new principal gig at Caltech, three fires to light as the rookie boss. How do you blaze without fuel? And even if work chilled out, what about home? No "husbandly duties"?

Hibbert pretended not to notice Adam's look. He had a plan. A big-shot principal wasn't about to blindly follow every word from Adam. If energy meds were off the table, he'd pivot to something else. A social butterfly like him had heard plenty about the downsides of "good buddies" from his network—and the "green, harmless" alternatives too.

Hmmm. Mysterious Eastern magic—gentle, nourishing, no side effects. Older donors swore by it privately; anyone who'd tried it raved. He'd been meaning to switch for a while, but the mild stuff wasn't fast or strong enough—his "teachers" weren't thrilled. So he'd stuck with the old stuff. Now? Perfect excuse to upgrade.

Panther's Spring. Maybe his real spring was coming.

Adam didn't push further. It's Hibbert's body, his call.

"Lauren?" Hibbert glanced at Adam for backup, then puffed up a bit, facing his wife, waiting for her to cave first.

"I trust you thought it was just a little pimple," Lauren said, eyes red, each word deliberate.

"Lauren!" Hibbert huffed, unimpressed. "It was just a pimple!"

"That's as far as I can bend," she snapped, eyes still watery. "This world's terrifying—every day's a mess of chaos, endless accidents that could kill us. Why can't you get that? If that 'pimple' showed up on you, I'd freak out just as much, drag you here to check for stomach cancer or worse. Because I love you! I can't handle any random danger hitting you. Why can't you see that?!"

"Lauren…" Hibbert's face turned red, shooting Adam an awkward glance. "Alright, sorry, I'll do it, okay?" Then, with a cheeky grin, "But mark this down—it's the most romantic thing I've ever done for you."

"Pfft, heh." Lauren cracked a smile through her tears. "I'll remember it. Definitely one of the most romantic things."

"What do I need to do?" Hibbert asked, turning to Adam.

"Dr. Melendez," Adam called to Shorty. "Get Dr. Hibbert prepped for the transplant."

"Yes, sir," Shorty replied, all business. "This way, please."

The prep dragged on forever. No shock there—a prestigious uni principal "publicly" dropping a sample in a bowl? Way more mental baggage than Leonard and the gang hitting the high-IQ sperm bank.

"I love you, even when you're spouting nonsense," Hibbert said post-relief, holding his wife's hand with a grin. "All these years, I've put up with your endless crap—now my crap's finally useful too."

He let go, nodding at Shorty, who was prepping the bacteria culture. "I'm here for my wife, but for the sake of our romantic harmony, I'll pass on watching this. I'll wait in the lobby."

With that, he bolted, avoiding even a glance at Shorty stirring the petri dish.

Adam and Shorty handled the simple procedure. After delivering the good news to Hibbert, Adam washed his hands of it. If it weren't for his curiosity about Hibbert, he wouldn't have bothered with such a basic surgery.

Just as he geared up to tackle a new critical case, an unknown number buzzed his phone.

"Hello?"

"Adam, it's Pam—Pam Smith, Karen's sister," a frantic voice rushed out. "I need your help."

"Hey, Pam," Adam said, frowning.

He recognized her voice instantly and knew she was Karen's "mini-me" little sis. They'd chatted last Christmas over the phone, and afterward, Adam had brought her up with Juno. From Juno's take, this "alternate account" sibling was a total waste of effort—already a mess at a young age, hooked on Adam's least favorite vice: shoddy goods. Supposedly clean now, but Adam still instinctively recoiled.
