Chapter 65: Warden Remnant

The Free Accord had been active for less than three minutes when the Warden signal stopped waiting outside the inspection perimeter. Seraphina looked up first. A gold line cut across the blue shield, then bent around the block as if an invisible hand were searching for an older entrance.

Liam divided the block before Jace could give an order. Michael took the western barricade. Luke carried evidence plates. Owen watched the receiver. Carter kept the evacuation lanes clear. The assignments were volunteered, argued over, and changed once when Emma refused to let an injured man take a roof position. It was slower than a command chain and harder to summarize on a panel. It also meant the Warden's first scan found no single subordinate network to cut.

Luke looked at the scattered teams and grinned despite himself. "Terrible army."

"Good," Liam said. "We are not building one."

That advantage lasted until the machine changed categories. It stopped searching for soldiers and started searching for witnesses.

Jace stared at the final line.

"Of course the dead robot has seniority."

The inspection light above the clouds remained fixed. It did not enter. It did not leave. It simply withdrew its protection from the south approach. A crash rolled through the ruined street. Something tall stepped between two broken buses. Its armor had once been white. Soot and old impact marks had turned most of it gray. One shoulder was missing its outer plate, exposing a nest of gold mechanisms beneath. The blade folded along its right forearm was chipped. The cannon on its left still charged cleanly.

The Warden crossed another ten feet. A man in a scorched firefighter coat climbed onto the north barricade and pointed toward the western shelter.

"Everyone who can walk moves now. Keep the center path clear. Nobody stops for bags."

Twenty feet away, another man was dragging a steel shelving unit across the street with two volunteers.

"Do not open the west path until we have something between that thing and the door," he said.

A woman with a trauma bag ran between them, checked the widening street, then pointed to three patients on stretchers.

"These three do not move without six hands and a route that stays clear."

Luke looked at the patients, then at the Warden.

"We move them first."

Michael shook his head. "We hold the line first. If that unit reaches the doorway while we are carrying stretchers, everybody is exposed."

"People on stretchers are already exposed."

"And if we lose the entrance, so is everyone behind them."

Neither man raised his voice. That made the disagreement worse. Jace opened Breach Sight on the approaching machine.

"Chair might win."

She pulled a pressure wrap tighter around his damaged right arm. The Warden stopped at the edge of the old inspection line. A gold notice appeared over its head.

Mission state: INCOMPLETE.

The Warden answered its own prompt.

Michael saw the panel. "Who is giving it orders now?"

"No one," Seraphina said.

"That should stop it."

"That is not how inherited authority works."

Luke looked over his shoulder. "Then somebody designed authority badly."

The Warden's cannon rotated toward the shield.

Jace opened the territory defense controls.

She did not wait for an order.

"I choose to reinforce the south wall."

The Warden fired. Gold light struck the blue shield and spread across it in a flat circle.

The shelters shook. Luke did not look at Jace.

"Michael, give me thirty seconds. Natalie, take the first stretcher. I will open the west route myself."

Michael stared at the Warden, then at the people behind him.

"Twenty."

"Fine."

That was the first defense plan anyone made. No title approved it. No claimant assigned it. The Warden stepped through the smoking street. Its target field opened.
