Level 999: The Glitch King
Chapter 151: The Counterweight
The moon opened like an eyelid, and the System sent a boss to balance the math.
It stepped out of the lunar glare as a black iron giant three miles tall, wearing a crown of broken constellations and carrying a pair of scale pans the size of football fields. One pan hung empty. The other held a single, glowing number. It fell through the atmosphere without burning and landed in the Atlantic hard enough to shove the harbor out to sea.
[COMPENSATION BOSS: THE COUNTERWEIGHT]
[LEVEL: 1,602]
[BASE 999 + EXCESS RAIDERS 603]
[RAID PARTY: 615 / LIMIT 12]
[THE COUNTERWEIGHT: SURPLUS DETECTED]
[SIX SEALED COMBAT SKILLS: REMAIN SEALED]
[HEALTH: 447/520. CHARGE: 128/220. CORRUPTION: 89%]
The giant spoke without a mouth. The sound shook Manhattan's windows from the inside.
"SURPLUS WILL BE CORRECTED."
[OPTION: DISMISS 603 RAIDERS. DIFFICULTY RETURNS TO STANDARD]
[TIME REMAINING: 60 SECONDS]
Jace stood on the Titan wreck with six hundred and fourteen champions behind him and a golden window hanging in front of his face.
"No," he said.
"They are not people to this system," Penelope said quietly, holding her ledger against her chest. "They are a rounding error."
"Then the system can learn some names."
The Counterweight lifted its right scale pan, and the world became heavy.
[WEIGHT OF SURPLUS: ACTIVE]
The air thickened. Cars sank into the street. Six hundred champions dropped to one knee at the same moment, and the wreck beneath them groaned and sagged into the river. Jace's ribs bent against his lungs.
[HEALTH: 447 -> 431]
"Six hundred and three tons," Scarlett said through her teeth. "On every one of us."
"One for each excess raider," Alexander said. "It is counting."
Jace watched the pan tilt. The number floating above it ticked by one for every person still kneeling. He thought about the word excess and the word party, and the two words fit together in a way that made him smile.
"Penelope," he said. "Read me the limit."
This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.
"Twelve."
"Is it twelve registered, or twelve present?"
She looked at the golden window. Her pen stopped. "Present. It reads the current party."
"Then the party is whoever is in it right now."
The Counterweight raised its second pan.
"Everyone leave the party," Jace said. "Me too."
Six hundred and fifteen people pressed the same button at once.
[PARTY: 615 -> 0]
[EXCESS RAIDERS: 603 -> 0]
[THE COUNTERWEIGHT: LEVEL 1,602 -> 999]
The weight vanished like a dropped anchor. The champions rose in a wave. The giant's number blinked, confused, and fell to something that looked a great deal like a fair fight.
"But if they are not in the party," Caleb said, "they cannot damage it."
"Correct," Jace said. "Penelope, call the order. Twelve at a time. Two seconds each."
Penelope ran the numbers. Fifty-one squads of twelve would account for six hundred and twelve participants, including her and Caleb. Alexander, Scarlett, and Jace would form the final group of three.
"That is fifty-one squads of twelve," Penelope said. "Plus a last squad of three. You, Alexander, and Scarlett."
"Then fifty-two groups."
Penelope opened the ledger and began reading names in a voice that could have commanded a navy.
"Squad one, join!"
Twelve champions flashed into the party. The Ninefold Wall rose, Skybreaker Chain struck the giant's knee, and a lightning bolt split the Atlantic. Two seconds later they left, and twelve more joined. Ice wolves. Burning knights. A woman with twin hammers brought a mountain down on the Counterweight's foot.
[PARTY: 12 / 12]
[EXCESS RAIDERS: 0]
[THE COUNTERWEIGHT: DAMAGE TAKEN]
The giant staggered. A crack ran up its leg. It lifted the first scale pan and tried to crush the squads under it, and the party flickered, and the weight missed every single one of them.
"Squad nineteen, join!"
The Counterweight stopped.
"ROSTER ANOMALY," it said. "PARTY LOCK."
[PARTY ROSTER: FROZEN AT 615]
[EXCESS RAIDERS: 0 -> 603]
[THE COUNTERWEIGHT: LEVEL 999 -> 1,602]
The giant's fist came down and the sea vanished. A blast of weight tore through the active squad and flung them across the harbor. Jace took the shockwave directly in the chest.
[HEALTH: 431 -> 416]
"It is locked to the people," Jace shouted, coughing. "I can swap anyone I want and it still counts them as present!"
"Then count something else," Caleb said.
He was already kneeling. The marking kit lay open at his side, and he lifted the brush with a hand that was not quite steady.
"The roster is people," he said. "The party is a boundary. Seat twelve, line them up, and the system will read it as a map."
"You are going to paint the party."
"I am going to paint the seats."
Caleb drove a stake into the wreck and ran a circle of red paint around the first.
"Boundary," he said. "Whoever stands in this circle is the party."
Eleven more circles bloomed across the armor, each one with a stake at its center. The red paint caught the light and held it. Jace looked at the Counterweight's golden window and found the line he needed.
Jace raised the stabilized pulse and aimed it at the paint.
[OVERWRITE PULSE: SURGICAL APPLICATION]
[TARGET: PARTY STRUCTURE]
[SEATS REPLACE FIXED ROSTER]
[TARGET SIZE: 12]
[CHARGE COST: 2]
[CHARGE: 128 -> 126]
[NEUROLOGICAL FEEDBACK: DETECTED]
[CAUSE: PARTY STRUCTURE REWRITE]
[PRECISION CONTROL: DEGRADED UNTIL THE NEXT ENCOUNTER ENDS]
Pain shot through his skull. The roster unfroze. The Counterweight's number dropped, hesitated, and settled where it belonged.
[SEATS: 12]
[PARTY ROSTER: UNFROZEN]
[THE COUNTERWEIGHT: LEVEL 999]
"Now," Jace said. "One second each."
The champions rotated through the seats like a strobe. Twelve flashed in, struck, and flashed out. Skybreaker Chain split the sky over the harbor. Ninefold Wall rammed the giant's knee. Twin Moon Dance cut silver crescents through its armor, and the woman with the twin hammers raised a mountain beneath its heel. The Counterweight swung its pans. Every swing missed. Every seat was always full.
Caleb entered with squad twenty-seven and drove a painted boundary through the giant's ankle. Penelope took the twelfth seat in squad forty-four, reading the next names even as her spear punched through the Counterweight's hip.
"Squad fifty-one, out," Penelope called. "Squad fifty-two. Join."
Jace, Alexander, and Scarlett stepped into the last three seats.
[PARTY: 3 / 12]
[SQUADS COMPLETE: 51 OF 52]
Fifty-one squads had struck the Counterweight. Three miles of iron stood cracked from crown to heel, with one arm raised toward a sky that had not built its reinforcements yet.
Jace snapped the Gravity Chain across the raised arm.
[GRAVITY CHAIN: ACTIVATED]
[CHARGE: 126 -> 121]
The chain caught the weight inside the pan and pulled it down onto its owner. The scale tipped. Alexander drove Falling Verdict into one side of the giant's chest. Scarlett crossed Ember Rend through the other. The afterimages of six hundred and twelve earlier strikes rose out of the wound and fell back through the cut at once.
[RAID COMBINATION: REVOLVING VERDICT]
The Counterweight cracked from crown to heel and folded under the number it had written on its own scale. It fell backward into the Atlantic and sent a wall of water toward Manhattan, where Mateo's cranes caught it with a net of cables and Theodore's lattice pushed the rest back to sea.
The collapse ripped the Gravity Chain tight and wrenched Jace across the wreck before he could release it.
[HEALTH: 416 -> 408]
[COMPENSATION BOSS: DEFEATED]
[TEAM-COMBINATION PROFICIENCY: INCREASED]
The wreck was quiet. The champions lay in the shallows, laughing in the way of people who had not expected to be alive. Penelope wrote one line at the bottom of her ledger and underlined it twice.
Seats, not rosters.
The red eye in orbit stopped blinking.
[PRECISION CONTROL PENALTY: ACTIVE]
[HIGHER ROOK AUTHORITY: BALANCED OPPONENT REQUIRED]
[STANDARD RAID: 12]
[ROOK ENVOYS DISPATCHED: 12]
[ARRIVAL: 11 SECONDS]
Health: 408/520.
Charge: 121/220.
