Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 145: Execution Beast

  • Next Chapter

The Execution Beast ran along the wall of the world, and the wall screamed under every step.

It was a six-legged iron hound the size of Manhattan, eyeless and thirteen chains deep in bondage, with a red spike driven through the crown of its skull like a king's last insult. Each paw crushed a whole deck into scrap. Each stride sent a thousand-ton slab of ship tumbling toward the open belly of the vessel, and below that belly, small and bright and eight minutes from being crushed, lay the Safe Zone.

[EXECUTION BEAST: LEVEL 612]

[ROOK TRIAL BOSS: BOUND]

[DECKS DESTROYED: 4 AND RISING]

[LANDING ON THE SAFE ZONE: 8 MINUTES]

Gravity had turned sideways, so the ground was now the wall and the wall was the floor. Jace stood on a bridge that ran straight out into nothing, with the freed champions clinging to it behind him and Alexander's sword humming at his shoulder. The beast turned its blind head toward the sound of his boots.

[HEALTH: 298/420. CHARGE: 77/140]

"It hunts by noise," Scarlett said. She crouched beside him with her red blade across her knees and her eyes locked on the monster. "Every paw lands on the rhythm of a chain."

"Which chain?" Alexander asked.

"That is the question."

Jace had no Breach Sight. He had no Static Step and no Rule Fracture. He had two gauntlets, a burning palm, and the discipline of a man who had spent the last fight learning the rhythm of one sword, and he turned that discipline on the beast. He listened to the chains. Twelve of them rattled together like a gutted piano, a clean iron chorus. The thirteenth, a black cable the width of a tree trunk running from the spike to the beast's left hip, rattled half a step late every time.

"The black one," Jace said.

"That is the heavy one," Alexander said. "That is how it keeps its head."

"That is how it keeps its leash. Every other chain is a cage. That one is an order."

The beast roared and leapt. It crossed a mile of open air in one bound, struck the wall in front of them, and a deck the size of a stadium folded in half beneath its paws.

"Mateo," Jace said into his collar.

"Falling deck, falling deck, falling deck," Mateo answered, breathless, from somewhere over a roar of diesel engines. "I have six crane trucks, a harbor tug, and a very strong opinion. Do not worry about the roofs. Worry about the thing that is making the roofs."

Cables shot from the Safe Zone. Jace watched them snap across the sky in a gleaming net and catch the first falling slab, then the second, then the third. The net sagged. It held. The decks crumpled into the harbor with all the dignity of a dropped sandwich.

"Now," Scarlett said.

She and Alexander went over the edge together.

The beast's two front paws came down in a storm of iron, and the Rook heir and the red sword landed one on each. Alexander drove his blade into the left paw and cut a line of red power into it. "Falling Verdict," he roared, "Seventh Edict!" Scarlett slammed her sword into the right paw and screamed, "Ember Rend, Third Form!" A river of fire raced up the leg. The two forelimbs locked solid, held in a column of red light, and the beast's momentum bent its entire body into a bow.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

[EXECUTION BEAST: FORELIMBS HELD]

[ESTIMATED HOLD: 40 SECONDS]

Jace ran.

He ran along the beast's leg like a man crossing a bridge made of mountain, and every step shook the mile of iron below him. The first lash came out of the dark. A chain whipped across the leg and opened his shoulder to the bone.

[HEALTH: 298 -> 286]

He did not stop. He slid under the second lash and felt the third tear a line across his thigh.

[HEALTH: 286 -> 276]

The black chain waited at the beast's hip, thick as a bridge cable, humming with Rook command. Jace slapped his palm against it, and the red seal on his hand bit down.

[ROOK BLADE SEAL: ACTIVATED]

[TARGET: BOUND SEAL]

[COST: STAMINA]

[SEAL POWER: JUST BELOW THE BLADE SEAL LIMIT]

The chain resisted. It was an order carved by a thousand Rook trials, and Jace's seal was only minutes old. He felt the whole weight of the beast's captivity push back through his arm, and then he did what he trusted when every system failed him. He kept pushing.

Link by link, the black chain split. Seals peeled off it in sheets of red light. The beast shuddered, the leash came free, and the monster turned its head at last, not toward the noise of Jace's feet but toward the open belly of the ship below, where the bright small thing waited. It tried to leap. The spike in its skull pulsed once, and the beast screamed and went rigid.

"The spike!" Alexander shouted. "The spike is the order!"

"I know!"

The black chain dropped. It coiled around Jace's right forearm like a living thing and locked, and the ship answered with a bell.

[GRAVITY CHAIN: ACQUIRED]

[EPIC RELIC. ANCHORS ITS HOLDER TO ANY GRAVITY IT CAN REACH]

[CHARGE: 77 -> 72]

The beast's gravity belonged to Jace for as long as the chain held. He did not understand it. He did not need to. He wrapped the chain once around his fist, threw its end into the beast's gravity well, and the whole monster pulled him upward like a tide.

The chain launched him two miles along its spine in a single heartbeat. The beast bucked. The wall tilted. Gravity turned over a second time and swung the whole world a quarter turn, so that the monster's back became the ground and the sky became a ship, and Jace rode the spine through the turn with the chain wound around his arm and his boots grinding red sparks out of a shoulder the size of a stadium.

[GRAVITY TURN: RIDING]

[FALL RISK: ABSOLUTE]

[NEUROLOGICAL FEEDBACK: DETECTED]

[HEALTH: 276 -> 266]

A wave of white pain went through his skull, a thin whine that rose and fell. The chain was feeding the beast's memory straight into his head, a thousand years of obedience compressed into one scream. His fingers tingled. His vision doubled.

[PRECISION CONTROL: DEGRADED UNTIL THE NEXT ENCOUNTER ENDS]

The spike rose in front of him like a lighthouse.

It stood forty feet tall, a red iron lance driven through the beast's crown and glowing with Rook command. Jace staggered to the base of it, braced both gauntlets against the spike, and felt the stored wave inside the gloves answer his heartbeat.

[TRIAL KNUCKLE: ONE BREAKER WAVE STORED]

"You do not get to call him the monster," Jace told the spike. "This is for every deck you forced him to break."

He punched.

The Breaker Wave left his fists as a white ring that tore through the beast's skull from front to back and shattered the spike into ten thousand red stars. The beast froze. The sky above it, the whole folded ceiling of the trial, filled with falling light. And for the first time in its life, the monster breathed out without being told to.

[EXECUTION BEAST: FREED]

[CONTROL SPIKE: DESTROYED]

[TRIAL KNUCKLE: DEPLETED]

[RECHARGE CONDITION: DEFEAT A ROOK TRIAL BOSS]

The beast sank to its knees, slow as a mountain, and laid its head on the iron floor.

[EXECUTION BEAST CONDITION: CRITICAL]

[COMBAT CAPACITY: 0%]

[REMAINING POWER DIVERTED TO CHAMPION VAULT]

Alexander and Scarlett came running down the spine with their blades smoking. Behind them the freed champions cheered. Mateo's voice crackled over the radio, saying something about the tug being on fire and having never been happier.

Then the beast's ribs opened.

They unfolded like the gates of a cathedral, and beyond them, filling the folded space of the ship from wall to wall, hung an ocean of cages. Each cage held a person. Each person held a weapon, and every one of them was looking at Jace.

[CAGED CHAMPIONS DETECTED: 614]

[LANDING ON THE SAFE ZONE: 4 MINUTES]

Health: 266/420.

Charge: 72/140.
