Reader survey

The Dark Night Organization — feared by nations across the globe for the mere rumor of their name — had actually taken a fall at the hands of one high school senior.

This was absolutely going to become an international joke...

"Forget all that — evacuate first!"

Within moments, the Dark Night members packed up their critical data.

Using their contract spirits, they made it out of the building safely. No casualties.

Just as several dozen of them were sneaking away, someone had been waiting for them on the street for some time.

"Liu Wuji. What's the rush?"

Wang Qing, from the Education Ministry, wore a smile at the corner of his lips — but his eyes were brimming with ice.

"Wang Qing!"

The Dark Night leader Liu Wuji turned to look. His expression was beyond grim.

"Ten years, hasn't it been? No wonder you were able to escape the Dragon Guard's encirclement back then. So you'd joined the Dark Night."

Wang Qing shook his head, fury blazing in his eyes.

Ten years ago, in order to hunt down a Silver-rank King Beast, this man had been so utterly deranged that he'd deliberately lured the creature into a Spirit Suppression Army outpost.

The Spirit Suppression Army and the beast tore each other apart. Liu Wuji had slaughtered the surviving soldiers, seized the King Beast, and officially begun his life as a fugitive.

In the end, with the Dark Night Organization's assistance, he'd fled Huaxia.

"I never imagined it would be you."

Liu Wuji let out a sigh. Wang Qing had a reconnaissance-type contract spirit — he must have sensed the Ice Lion's power.

After all, no one had ever heard of the Dingsheng Group having a Gold-rank Beast Tamer. Wang Qing had naturally grown suspicious.

"You're no match for me!"

Beneath Liu Wuji, the Ice Lion let out a roar. Gold-rank pressure erupted outward.

"I was only stalling for time. Your opponent is up above!"

Wang Qing laughed. He pointed toward the sky.

"Huh?"

Liu Wuji blinked, then looked up.

In that instant, a terrifying winged beast radiating cold energy came spreading its wings toward them.

"Heavenly Ice Phoenix King?!"

Fear flashed through Liu Wuji's eyes. He'd never imagined they would attract the Nancang Governor — the strongest man in the entire province!

"Dark Night dares stretch its hand toward Huaxia — courting death!"

A man stood atop the Ice Phoenix's back, his expression utterly cold. Within a thousand meters, the temperature plummeted. The chill bit to the bone.

Scree!

The Heavenly Ice Phoenix King let out a clear cry and exhaled a mouthful of frost.

The blazing Dingsheng Building was instantly transformed into a massive ice sculpture.

What was astonishing, however, was that the flames continued to burn — trapped inside the ice, producing an endless sizzling sound...

"Huh? What the hell is this?"

The Nancang Governor let out a puzzled murmur. He was distinctly surprised.

The next instant, the ice sculpture shattered, bursting into countless shards. The flames dissipated in the same moment.

What had once been a grand office tower was now nothing but rubble.

Wang Qing offered a faint smile. "Governor, you may proceed!"

In an instant, a transparent barrier materialized around Liu Wuji and his men — like a ward, it sealed them all inside.

A blue Dragon Cat appeared on Wang Qing's shoulder, its eyes shining with the brilliant glow of a skill. The barrier was clearly its work.[1]

"Now we're in trouble!"

Liu Wuji's heart sank. He'd completely forgotten about Wang Qing's control-type contract spirit.

With no further concern for collateral damage, the Nancang Governor attacked at full power. The battle erupted in an instant!

......

Right about now, the actual culprit — Chen Shu — was strolling toward the Spirit Fighting Arena at a leisurely pace, whistling.

"Reward obtained: Slime — all attributes +10% + Massive Beast Taming Power!"

The Beast Taming Power inside Chen Shu surged upward yet again. He'd reached the peak of Level 9 — just a hair's breadth from a breakthrough.

In high spirits, he returned to the competition platform.

But every pair of eyes in the arena was looking somewhere else — all fixed on the battle raging outside.

Chen Shu called out, "Xiaoyu! Xia Bing!"

The two snapped back to attention and immediately — instinctively — took a step backward. "Was that you?!"

"Huh? What?"

Chen Shu's face was the picture of total innocence. He had absolutely no idea what they were talking about.

"It really wasn't you?"

Xia Bing saw the blank look on his face and found herself half-convinced.

Xu Xiaoyu burst out, "Xia Bing, are you stupid?! He's the Nanjiang Bandit!"

"Wherever he shows up, things go wrong. There's no way this is a coincidence!"

Xu Xiaoyu's certainty was absolute. "It's definitely him. He literally just said he was going to torch a building!"

Both of their gazes locked onto him, their minds reeling.

So you fucking squeezed in burning down a skyscraper before your match?!

This was the center of Nancang City. Neither of them had even imagined something like this was possible.

Chen Shu shrugged. "Don't be silly. It got cold out. I was just warming up."

"WARMING UP?!"

Their eyes bulged. For a moment, it felt like they couldn't even draw breath.

They were starting to suspect all three of them would be arrested before the match even finished.

From now on, they'd truly shut out the world beyond their window...

And by window, of course, they meant prison bars.[2]

Just then, the battle outside came to an end.

The Nancang Governor was the province's only King-rank Beast Tamer. Fighting a Gold-rank was, for him, dead simple.

Liu Wuji and several dozen others had been frozen into ice sculptures. Two Gold-rank contract spirits were dead...

"Old Wang, impressive work. Uncovering the Dark Night Organization — the state's been investigating them in secret all along."

The Nancang Governor withdrew his contract spirit and smiled as he spoke.

"Though your methods could use a little refinement. We should think before we act, you know. You went ahead and torched a building — makes you look like a criminal."

Wang Qing let out a bitter laugh. "Governor, do you really think I'd dare to just set fire to the city center?"

"I only sensed the Gold-rank aura. That's what tipped me off that something was wrong."

Wang Qing shook his head. And yet — when the word "criminal" had been spoken —

Chen Shu's face had surfaced in his mind entirely of its own accord.

Was it that guy?

Wang Qing knew Chen Shu's complete file. He knew the kid's full track record. He knew all about the "Nanjiang Bandit" nickname.

He thought to himself: "...Nah. A high school senior? Nobody's that insane. Right?"

"If it wasn't you, then who? Some independent Beast Tamer?"

The Nancang Governor furrowed his brow, but he didn't dwell on it.

If not for that fire, they could never have destroyed a Dark Night base without taking casualties.

The Governor's expression turned cold. "Every single employee of Dingsheng Group is to be investigated — including all subsidiary staff!"

For a major province-level corporation to have become a nest for the Dark Night Organization — it was absolutely preposterous!

Wang Qing nodded. The coming days were going to be busy for Nancang Province.

"Right — head back and host the Beast Taming Competition first. I'll have the Dragon Guard handle this."

......

With the arena already packed with media, news of the burning building in Nancang's city center spread across the entire province in an instant.

Nanjiang Second High.

Shen Wushuang stared blankly at the live webcast and swallowed — hard.

He no longer needed any deductive reasoning whatsoever.

As long as Chen Shu was present, the culprit was automatically identified!

"Principal, I'm requesting my resignation!"

Shen Wushuang marched directly toward the principal's office.

If he kept teaching any longer, at this rate, he wouldn't last long before landing behind bars himself.

He used to take pride in Chen Shu. But now, he was scared stiff — terrified, above all else, that the kid would call him "my teacher."

This. Was genuinely. Fucking. Insane.[3]

He was only a high school senior, and he'd already dared to burn down Nancang's city center. At this rate, wouldn't he be blowing up Blue Star daily for fun a few years from now?!

[1] 龙猫 (Dragon Cat / Totoro): The name 龙猫 is the Chinese name for Totoro from Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro — a cute, mystical forest spirit. Here, it is a blue control-type contract spirit belonging to Wang Qing, specializing in creating transparent sealing barriers rather than direct combat.

[2] 两耳不闻窗外事...铁窗 (Shut Out the World... Prison Bars): The phrase "两耳不闻窗外事" comes from the classical Chinese scholar's maxim "Both ears deaf to the world beyond your window, your whole heart devoted only to sage books" — describing the ideal state of total scholarly dedication. Here, the line subverts it: they'll be "deaf to the world" because they'll be behind 铁窗 (iron window = prison bars). The pun exploits 窗 (window) shifting from "scholar's study window" to "prison cell window."

[3] 逆天 (nì tiān): Literally "going against heaven" — in classical Chinese thought, violating the fundamental cosmic order. In modern Chinese internet culture, 逆天 has evolved into an absurdity amplifier: something so outrageous it escapes all normal scales of judgment. Used here with the vulgar intensifier 你妈 ("your mom," equivalent to "fucking"), the phrase expresses maximum incredulity — Chen Shu's actions have exceeded not just legal and ethical boundaries, but all conceivable measures of reason.
