Investing In Overlooked Women: I Get Cashback On Every Glow-Up
Chapter 119: Welcome To LUMEN
The walk through the front doors of the restaurant took my breath away. The renovation was completely finished.
The custom acoustic glass "chef’s showroom" stood right at the center of the space like a lit-up diamond. The custom white alabaster stone, the warm recessed lighting, and the wide view of the ocean created an atmosphere that made Durev’s venue look like a cheap diner.
Patricia stood in the center of the main dining room, running her hand along the smooth edge of a marble service station, her eyes wide with emotion.
"It’s breathtaking, Ethan," she whispered, looking around the pristine layout. "I still can’t believe this is real."
"It’s all yours," I said, leaning against the bar. "Now it just needs a identity. What are we calling it?"
Patricia turned to look at the glass showroom, then out toward the waves crashing against the shore outside. A confident, calm smile spread across her face.
"LUMEN," she said softly, but with absolute certainty. "Because we’re going to bring light to this entire strip—and completely outshine the darkness."
Before I could reply, the heavy glass entrance doors pushed open.
Four chefs walked in, looking around the jaw-dropping venue with wide eyes and hushed whispers. They were the key talent Patricia had drawn up: Matt, a brilliant head sous chef who had been passed over by Durev; Elena, an elite pastry artist; and two relentless line cooks who knew how to handle pure chaos without breaking a sweat.
I stepped back, crossed my arms, and let Patricia take the stage. This was her kitchen, her team, her moment to step up as the leader she had become.
Patricia straightened her posture, stepping forward with total grace and unshakeable authority.
"Welcome to LUMEN," Patricia announced, her voice ringing clear through the flawless acoustics of the building.
The four chefs snapped their attention to her, instantly recognizing the fire in her eyes.
"I know why you’re here," Patricia continued, pacing slowly in front of her newly built glass kitchen. "You’re here because you’re tired of working for arrogant bosses who stifle your creativity, take credit for your dishes, and treat you like assembly-line workers. You’re here because you want to build something legendary."
Matt looked around at the state-of-the-art kitchen setup, visibly stunned. "Patricia... Durev said you were finished in this town. But this place... this is better than anything Ocean Front has ever built."
"Durev doesn’t own this industry," Patricia said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, confident tone that gave me goosebumps. "In less than two weeks, we open these doors. We have the highest quality equipment on the planet, an incredible budget, and a culinary standard trained directly under Olden Mante himself. I’m not offering you a job. I’m offering you the chance to join a team that will dismantle every ego on this coast."
She looked each of them dead in the eye.
"I demand perfection, speed, and total loyalty. In return, you get total creative respect, double your current salaries, and a front-row seat to the biggest takeover this city has ever seen. Who’s in?"
The four chefs didn’t even hesitate. A wave of fierce, hungry smiles broke across their faces as Matt stepped forward first, extending his hand.
"Tell us when prep starts, Chef."
"And don’t worry about any non-competes, broken contracts, or petty penalty fees Durev tries to throw at you," I added, stepping up beside Patricia with a cool smile. "My legal team will handle every single dime. Your only job is to focus on this kitchen."
That sealed it completely. Relief and raw determination washed over their faces.
"Prep starts Monday morning at 5:00 AM sharp," Patricia commanded, her voice ringing with natural authority. "Get your affairs in order. We have a empire to build."
Matt—the brilliant head sous chef who had been passed over by Durev—nodded firmly, shaking Patricia’s hand. "We’ll be here, Chef. Ready for war."
The following Monday, the glass doors of LUMEN were unlocked early. When Olden Mante walked into the oceanfront showroom and saw Matt, Elena, and the rest of the new brigade lined up at their stations in immaculate whites, even his notoriously stoic face registered a brief flash of genuine surprise.
He walked down the line, inspecting the setup, his sharp blue eyes taking in the quiet discipline and tight synchronization Patricia had already established.
"Impressive," Olden admitted, turning to Patricia with an approving nod. "A head chef is only as sharp as the brigade backing them up. You pulled together a hungry, talented crew in record time."
He unrolled his dark leather knife kit onto the main pass, looking over the entire team.
"Listen up," Olden barked, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the showroom. "You are no longer just line cooks. You are the foundation of LUMEN. For the remaining time we have left, I am not just training Patricia—I am training this entire kitchen to run like a clockwork machine. If one of you lags, the pass falls. Is that understood?"
"YES, CHEF!" Matt and the brigade shouted in unified chorus.
Olden glanced over at me with a rare, approving smirk before turning back to the line. "Good. Let’s get to work."
The smell of roasted garlic, seared thyme, and rich brown butter hung softly in the quiet air of Patricia’s apartment.
She set a plate down in front of me—a beautifully executed pan-seared duck breast over a smooth parsnip purée, drizzled with a glossy reduction. It was a dish that rivaled anything Olden had served us weeks ago, but cooked with her own distinct signature.
I took a bite, letting the rich, complex flavors settle on my palate. It was absolute perfection.
"If this is just a ’casual’ dinner at home," I said, dabbing my mouth with a napkin and smiling up at her, "then Durev doesn’t stand a single chance."
Patricia pulled out a chair across from me and sat down, resting her chin on her hands. She looked exhausted, but her eyes were bright.
"Tomorrow is the day, Ethan," she whispered, the weight of the moment finally sinking in. "Everything we’ve built... the million-dollar training, the team, LUMEN, the showroom... it all goes live tomorrow night."
"Yeah," I said softly, leaning back. "Tomorrow night, the trap snaps shut."
She stared at her folded hands for a long moment, a faint, nervous tremor visible in her fingers.
"I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified," Patricia admitted, looking up at me with raw honesty. "Olden’s squad is locked in, Matt and Elena are ready, the menu is flawless... but knowing Durev’s high-society gala is happening right next door at Ocean Front? Knowing every critic, every billionaire investor, and every influencer in the city is going to be watching?"
She let out a soft, shaky breath. "My head knows we’re ready, but my chest is pounding. What if something goes wrong?"
I reached across the table and covered her trembling hand with mine, grounding her instantly.
"Listen to me," I said, my voice quiet, steady, and unshakeable. "Durev built his entire career on fear, intimidation, and stealing credit from people like you. He thinks he bought victory by booking Olden for one night to save his reputation. He has no idea that the master chef he’s relying on trained you for three weeks straight—and he certainly doesn’t know that Olden won’t be stepping foot near his kitchen tomorrow."
I squeezed her hand, a calm, razor-sharp smile playing on my lips.
"You aren’t just going to open a restaurant tomorrow, Patricia. You’re going to take back everything he tried to steal from you, right in front of the entire city. Breathe. You’re ready."
Patricia looked at me, taking a deep breath as the nervous tension in her shoulders slowly melted away, replaced by the cold, fierce confidence of a true Executive Chef.
"Tomorrow night," she said, her voice dropping into a determined whisper. "We light up the coast."
