Investing In My Demon Empress: Every Seal I Break Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 36: The Order of the Unbroken Accord
Nobody moved for a long moment after Kael spoke.
Then the Councillor pulled the chair from beside Fen’s workbench and sat down with the unhurried ease of someone who had been standing for a long time and had decided the conversation was going to take long enough to justify it. He folded his hands on the table and looked at Kael with the directness of someone who had run out of reasons to be indirect.
"Sit," he said.
Kael sat on the edge of the workbench. Fen stayed standing near the passage entrance . Not blocking it, just near it, the way someone stood near a door they weren’t sure they were going to need.
"The Order of the Unbroken Accord," the Councillor said. "That is what we are called. What we have always been called, though the name has not been spoken publicly in approximately two thousand years." He looked at his folded hands for a moment. "We formed before the war ended. Before the sealing. A faction within the original Celestial order who believed that what was being done to the Empress was wrong . Not strategically, morally." He looked up. "We were overruled."
"How many of you," Kael said.
"Now?" The Councillor considered. "Forty-three active members across six kingdoms. Perhaps two hundred in supporting roles who know the order exists but not its full purpose." He paused. "At our founding we were several thousand. Three thousand years of operating in secret while the Celestial Remnants actively hunted anyone they identified as belonging to us reduced that number considerably."
"The Remnants know about you," Kael said.
"They have always known about us," the Councillor said. "We are the only faction that could expose what they’re protecting. Which makes us the only faction they consider genuinely dangerous." He looked at the ring on Kael’s hand. "More dangerous than the Ring Seekers. More dangerous than any cultivator who simply wants the ring’s power. Because we don’t want the ring’s power. We want the truth inside it."
"What truth," Seradhiel said in Kael’s skull. Not directed at him . The instinct of someone who had heard something that required a response and had forgotten for a moment that the response couldn’t go where she wanted it to go.
Kael relayed it. "She’s asking what truth."
The Councillor looked at the ring with that expression again . The recognition that had been waiting years to land somewhere.
"The truth of why the war started," he said. "Who bears actual responsibility for three thousand years of Valdenmoor’s history being written by the people who won." He paused. "And specifically what the original Celestial order did in the century before the war that made conflict inevitable and that they have been suppressing evidence of ever since."
The back room was quiet.
The array on the floor caught the lamplight in thin gold lines. Outside, since the commotion of the arrivals had died down, the relay station had settled back into its nighttime quiet . Just the passing wind moving through the leaves and the occasional shift of horses in the stable below.
"What can you offer," Kael said.
The Councillor reached into his traveling coat and produced a small case . Dark wood, iron clasp, the kind of container that was built to protect something fragile across a long journey. He set it on the workbench beside Kael without opening it.
"Inside that case are three Sovereign-grade Essence crystals," he said. "They were taken from the original sealing site three thousand years ago by the founding members of our order before the Remnants could secure them. They contain residual Essence from the sealing ritual itself." He looked at Kael. "Placed in contact with the ring they will accelerate the passive draw channel beyond anything the array or standard resources can achieve. The pathway development you experienced in the past three weeks will feel slow by comparison."
Kael looked at the case. Looked at the Councillor.
"Why give them to me," he said. "You’ve had them for three thousand years. Why now."
"Because for three thousand years there was no bearer running the investment path," the Councillor said. "The crystals only function as an accelerant through an active Investment Authority channel. Without a bearer the Essence inside them is inert." He held Kael’s gaze. "You activated the channel three weeks ago. These have been waiting for that moment since our founders took them from the sealing site."
"He is telling the truth," Seradhiel said. "I can feel the crystals from here. The Essence inside them.." she stopped. Something in the register of her voice shifted. "It is from the sealing ritual. I remember that Essence. I felt it when the seals were placed."
Kael kept his expression neutral. "She confirms the crystals are genuine."
The Councillor exhaled slowly. The exhale of someone who had been holding something for a long time.
"She can feel them," he said. Not a question.
"Yes," Kael said.
The Councillor looked at the ring for a long moment. Then at Kael.
"What we need from you," he said, "is simpler than what we’re giving. We need you to survive the next three days. We need you to continue the investment path break the seals in order, through investment, the way the system intends them to be broken. And we need you, when the time comes and the Empress can speak for herself" he paused, "to let her."
"Let her," Kael said.
"The Remnants have spent three thousand years controlling the historical narrative," the Councillor said. "When the sixth seal breaks and her full memory returns she will know the truth of why the war started. The truth that makes everything the Remnants have built their power on collapse." He held Kael’s gaze. "They will do anything to prevent that from happening. Anything. Which is why the seven seals need to break in order and through investment .Forced breaking destabilizes the channel and could damage the memories permanently."
"What about the Remnants in three days," Kael said.
"We handle them," the Councillor said. "That is what our forty-three active members are for." Something moved in his expression. "We have been preparing for their arrival since the Investment Authority activated. We knew they would come. We simply needed to arrive first."
