Two days.

That was what it took with Kael channeling Void Essence through each section as Fen completed it real-time calibration instead of post-build adjustment, the pattern responding to actual Void output rather than Fen’s theoretical model of what Void output should look like.

It was not a comfortable two days.

Channeling Void Essence on demand through specific points in a developing array pattern required a level of precise pathway control that Kael didn’t fully have yet. Fen would complete a section, point to a calibration node, and Kael would push a thread of Void Essence toward it with as much directional accuracy as he could manage. Sometimes it landed cleanly. Sometimes it dispersed before reaching the node and Fen would make a small sound that wasn’t quite frustration and adjust the etching.

By the end of the first day Kael’s pathway felt like it had been wrung out.

"Your control is improving," Seradhiel said that evening. "The precision required for calibration work is different from combat technique. You are developing a finer degree of pathway manipulation than combat training alone would produce."

"Is that useful," Kael said.

"For someone whose primary technique involves compressing Void Essence into a precise point and releasing it with controlled force," she said, "yes. Extremely."

He hadn’t thought of it that way.

He went to sleep and dreamed of nothing and woke up with his pathway feeling cleaner than it had the night before, the way muscles sometimes felt stronger the morning after the session that broke them.

Second day went faster. His precision had improved overnight in the way skills sometimes did the body consolidating what the mind had been working through. Fen noticed. Didn’t comment. Just moved through the remaining sections at twice the pace of the day before, his chalk stylus finding the nodes in a rhythm that suggested he’d been running the pattern in his head all night too.

By late afternoon the array was done.

Fen sat back on his heels and looked at it.

The floor of the back room was covered with the original circulation array at the center surrounded by the new Void pathway enhancement pattern spreading outward to the walls in lines so fine they were almost invisible unless the lamplight caught them at the right angle. Together the two arrays looked like something alive. Like a language that had been written in two different hands and somehow said the same thing.

"Sit in the center," Fen said.

Kael sat in the center.

"When I activate it," Fen said, moving to a specific point at the pattern’s outer edge, "don’t try to direct what happens. Let the array work. Your only job is to keep your pathway open and not resist the flow."

"What should it feel like," Kael said.

Fen looked at the pattern. "I don’t know," he said. "I’ve never built one of these before."

Kael looked at the ring.

"Neither have I," Seradhiel said. "I will tell you immediately if something is wrong."

"Alright," Kael said.

Fen pressed his palm flat against the activation node at the pattern’s edge and pushed a thread of Essence into it.

The array came online.

It didn’t hum the way the circulation array hummed. It didn’t produce warmth the way the ring produced warmth. What it did was harder to describe ; a silence that was somehow more present than sound, a stillness in the air of the back room that had direction to it, that was pointed specifically at the center where Kael was sitting, at his chest where the Void pathway lived.

Then it started pulling.

Not aggressively. Not painfully. But unmistakably a draw from outside his body, organized and deliberate, finding the Void pathway with the precision of something that had been designed specifically for it and pulling at it the way a drain pulled at water. Not taking Essence. Creating flow. The pathway responding to the draw the way it responded to cultivation practice, opening wider, the density increasing as the flow accelerated.

And underneath that, the passive draw from the ring ;already present, already constant amplifying. The two systems finding each other. The array’s external pull and the ring’s internal supplement working in the same direction simultaneously, the Void pathway caught between them and expanding in response.

"Kael," Seradhiel said.

Her voice was different.

Not closer the way it had been since the notebook. Something beyond closer. Like the distance between them had contracted by another degree that neither of them had anticipated.

"I feel it," he said quietly.

"Your pathway development," she said. "It is moving in real time. I can feel it from inside the seal." A pause that had weight in it. "I have not been able to feel a bearer’s cultivation development from inside the seal before. The array has changed the quality of the passive draw channel."

"Is that a problem," Kael said.

"No," she said. And then, more quietly: "It is the opposite of a problem."

He sat in the center of the array and let it work.

Thirty minutes. An hour. The pathway expanding steadily, the branch developing in parallel the way it had with the Void-attuned extract but faster, more organized, the array directing the development rather than just feeding it.

When Fen deactivated it at the two hour mark Kael sat in the sudden quiet of the back room and felt the difference.

The pathway that had been a cord this morning was something closer to a cable. Dense, organized, multiple threads running parallel within the same channel instead of a single compressed line.

He looked at his right palm. Loaded the Void Compression Strike without thinking about its compression building, something about to break that didn’t and released it at the wooden target post Fen had set up against the far wall for exactly this purpose.

The impact cracked the post at the base.

Not a surface mark. The base.

Fen looked at the post. Looked at Kael. Looked at the array on the floor.

"It works," he said.

"It works," Seradhiel confirmed. Something in her voice that she didn’t try to walk back this time. "Tell your array builder he has done something that should not have been possible in six days."

"She says you did well," Kael said.

Fen gave a look of relieve .

Then looked at Kael.

"She...?," he asked.
