Fen was already in the back room when Kael arrived.

Not using the circulation array. Crouched beside it with a chalk stylus in one hand and a folded reference sheet in the other, studying the existing etching pattern with the focused attention of someone who was about to build something more complicated on top of it and wanted to understand the foundation first.

He didn’t look up when Kael came in.

"Sit against the wall," he said. "I need the floor clear."

Kael sat against the wall and watched him work.

Fen’s hands moved with the precision of someone who had done this many times before ;not mechanically, thoughtfully. Each mark he made on the floor beside the existing array was deliberate, checked against the reference sheet, adjusted slightly, checked again. The lines he was laying down were finer than the circulation array’s broad strokes. More complex. The pattern building outward from the existing center like a second language written over the first.

"Void Essence doesn’t flow," Fen said without looking up. "Standard elemental Essence moves along pathways the way water moves through channels. It follows the path of least resistance." He made a precise mark at the edge of the pattern. "Void absorbs. Which means the array can’t direct it ; it has to create the conditions that make Void want to move in a specific direction." He sat back on his heels and looked at the pattern. "It’s like the difference between pushing water and creating a drain."

"How long did it take you to work that out," Kael said.

"Since yesterday when you told me your composition," Fen said. "I was up most of the night." He looked at the reference sheet. Made a small correction to something near the center. "Tell me about your pathway structure. The main thread what does it feel like when you cultivate. Describe it precisely."

Kael found the thread in his chest the way he always did dark, dense, concentrated, like something compressed past its natural state.

"Narrow," he said. "Denser than it should be for the width. Like the pathway is smaller than what’s moving through it."

Fen nodded slowly. "Compression effect. Void Essence compacts as it refines instead of expanding." He made two more marks. "Branches?"

"One main branch off the left side of the primary," Kael said. "Smaller. More stable than it was two weeks ago."

"Direction of flow in the branch."

Kael checked. "Downward. Toward the left hand."

Fen was quiet for a moment. His chalk stylus stopped moving.

"Your dominant hand is your right," he said.

"Yes," Kael said.

"But the branch flows toward the left."

"Yes."

Fen looked at the ring on Kael’s left hand. For longer than the glances he usually gave it.

"The branch isn’t developing naturally," he said. "It’s being drawn. Toward the ring." He looked back at the array pattern. "The passive draw isn’t just supplementing your cultivation. It’s actively shaping your pathway development toward the source."

"He is correct," Seradhiel said mentally to kael.

Kael said nothing to that. Couldn’t, with Fen three meters away.

"Is that a problem," he said.

"Depends on what’s in the ring," Fen said. He picked up the chalk stylus again. "A malicious sealed entity shaping a bearer’s pathway development toward itself would be a significant problem." He made a precise mark near the center of the new pattern. "A benevolent one doing the same thing would be the most sophisticated cultivation acceleration method I’ve ever seen."

He didn’t look up.

"Which is it," he said.

Kael looked at the ring. At the warmth sitting steady against his finger.

"The second one," he said.

Fen nodded once. Went back to his etching.

"Benevolent," Seradhiel said. The word sitting in Kael’s skull with a quality he couldn’t immediately name. "I have been called many things. That is a new one."

Kael kept his expression completely neutral.

"How much longer on the array," he said.

"Four days for the etching," Fen said. "Two days calibration after. Six total." He sat back and looked at the pattern developing across the floor. "When it’s active your pathway density development will accelerate by approximately two hundred percent above your current rate." He paused. "Combined with the passive draw that number compounds further. I can’t calculate exactly how much further because I’ve never seen a Void Essence pathway being supplemented by a Sovereign source before." He looked at Kael. "Nobody has."

Afternoon.

Kael sat cross legged on the inn bed with the week two cultivation resources Seradhiel had outlined in front of him.

Two vials of condensed Iron Realm Essence extract same as week one but he’d asked Fen about Void-specific variants and Fen had sourced something better from the outpost supply store. Void-attuned extract. Darker than standard. Three silver more per vial but the absorption rate was reportedly forty percent higher for Void composition pathways.

He’d spent eight silver on both vials. Twenty-seven silver remaining.

He placed the first vial against the ring.

The absorption was immediate and different from anything before it. Not the steady draw of standard extract something faster, more direct, the Void pathway pulling at the attuned Essence the way it pulled at ambient heat for the Azura Burst Flame. Hungry for it.

"Breathe," Seradhiel said. "Slower than you think you need to."

He breathed.

The warmth built from the ring outward and moved differently this time. Not along the main pathway in one direction but branching the main thread and the left-side branch both active simultaneously, both pulling from the extract, both developing in parallel rather than sequentially.

’That’s new,’ he thought.

"The branch is responding to the attuned extract," Seradhiel said. Her voice was closer than usual. Not louder closer. A quality that had been developing since the notebook, since the mountain and the forgotten name and the three pages of her history written down in small careful script. "Standard extract feeds the main pathway preferentially. Void-attuned extract feeds whichever pathway structure is most receptive. Both of yours are receptive simultaneously."

"Is that normal," Kael said quietly.

"For a Void cultivator with a Sovereign passive draw shaping the branch development toward its source?" A beat. "No. It is not normal."
