The woman stepped closer. "You’re coming with us."

Emeric didn’t move.

"I know who he is," he said. "And I’m not interested."

The man’s expression hardened. "That wasn’t a request."

He reached for Emeric’s arm.

Emeric moved.

Wind gathered at his heels. Lightning crackled in his blood. He sidestepped the grab, caught the man’s wrist, and twisted. The man yelped—a sharp, surprised sound—and stumbled. Emeric’s elbow caught him across the jaw. He went down.

The woman drew her blade.

Emeric didn’t wait.

He closed the distance before she could swing. His palm caught her wrist. His forehead slammed into her nose. She staggered back, blood streaming, and he swept her legs out from under her. She hit the cobblestones hard.

He stood over them both.

"Tell Garrick," he said quietly, "that if he wants to talk, he can find me himself. I don’t respond to threats."

He turned and walked into the alley.

Behind him, he could hear the sound of the man groaning and the woman cursing loudly

Emeric didn’t look back.

---

The alley was narrow and dark.

Emeric moved quickly. Quietly. Shadow Step muffled his footsteps. His Wind affinity stretched outward, sensing the air pressure around him. He felt no one following. Not yet.

He kept moving.

Down one alley. Across a street. Through a gap between buildings. He took a winding, unpredictable path—the kind that would shake a tail if one existed. He doubled back twice. Waited in the shadows and watched.

No one came.

After an hour, he was satisfied.

He headed home.

The walk gave him time to think.

Taking on a C-rank rift had been a mistake. For a D-rank party, they were punching above their weight.

He already knew this but he hated that he let himself be coerced into saying yes to something he was not comfortable with.

He knew it was a mistake. He had said it was a mistake. But he had let Collin push him. Let the promise of money and experience override his instincts.

He should have stood firm. Should have insisted they turn back. Should have—

He stopped.

They had been too excited. All of them. The Frost Keep had gone well. They had felt invincible. With that same false bravado, they had walked into the Molten Citadel like they owned it.

And Maynard had nearly died for it.

Emeric’s jaw tightened.

He was angry.

Not at Collin. Not at Mira, Maynard or Clarisse.

He was angry at himself.

He was the one with the cheat system. He was the one who could grow stronger. He was the one who should have known better. Should have been stronger. Should have been faster.

He had the power to protect them. And he had failed.

He needed more training.

He needed to push harder.

He needed to become someone who could stand between his friends and death.

He would.

The house was dark when he reached it.

He paused at the door. Took a breath. Let the tension drain from his shoulders.

Then he opened the door.

Isolde was in the sitting room.

The candle was lit. She was in her chair by the window, a book open in her lap. She looked up when he entered.

Her eyes found his.

She didn’t speak. She just looked. She could read him better than anyone.

"Long day," she said.

"Long day."

He crossed to her. Knelt beside her chair. Rested his head against her knee.

She reached down. Stroked his hair.

"Tell me."

He told her.

Not everything. He couldn’t. But enough. The rift. The trap. Maynard’s injury. The escape. The two men who had come for him after.

She listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she was quiet for a moment.

"You saved them," she said.

"I almost didn’t."

"But you did."

He didn’t answer.

She touched his face. Her fingers tracing the line of his jaw.

"You’re not perfect, Emeric. You’re not all-powerful. You’re just a man. A man who is trying. A man who is learning. A man who always comes ome."

He looked up at her.

"I need to be stronger."

"You will be."

"How do you know?"

She smiled.

"Because you don’t give up. You never have."

She leaned down and kissed is forehead.

"Now come to bed. You need rest."

He stood. Helped her into her chair. Wheeled her to the bedroom.

He lay down beside her.

She curled into him. Her head on his chest. Her hand over his heart.

He held her.

And for the first time in hours, he felt something other than anger.

He felt hope.

He just needed to close his eyes and he would deal with all this tomorrow.

The Next Day

The healing hall smelled of herbs and clean linen.

Emeric arrived just after dawn. The streets were quiet, the city still waking. A few merchants were setting up their stalls. A lamplighter was extinguishing the last of the night’s flames. The sky was grey, threatening rain.

He pushed through the heavy oak doors.

The hall was quiet. A few healers moved between beds, checking on patients. A clerk sat at a desk near the entrance, scribbling in a ledger. She looked up as he approached.

"Name and purpose?"

"Emeric Halden. Here to see Maynard. He’s a party member that was admitted two days ago."

She checked her ledger. Nodded.

"Third floor. Room seven. He’s had visitors already."

Emeric nodded. Made his way to the stairs.

Maynard’s room was small and smelled sickeningly clean. The memories it brought back were too dark for him to remember. 𝘧𝓇ℯℴ𝓂

There was a single window that looked out over the courtyard. The bed was positioned beneath it, and the morning light fell across the sheets.

Maynard was awake.
