Chapter 30: The Carriage Ride Home

The carriage swayed gently as it carried them through the city.

Isolde had drifted off against his shoulder, exhausted by the emotional weight of the morning. Her breathing was slow and even, her hand still loosely clasped in his.

The duel and everything that happened after it had all been too much.

Emeric stared out the window at the passing shops, his mind going over everything that had happened.

He had won.

He had actually won.

Against a Tier 6 Force mage who had trained for years. Everyone expected Kylian to crush him but he was happy to disappoint them.

And he had done it with magic.

He looked down at his hands, still trembling slightly from the adrenaline.

He had magic now and everyone knew it. Even Duke Halden.

Would he regret treating him the way he had all these years?

No. The Duke didn’t regret things. He was a cold and unfeeling man.

The only thing good about that man was his mother. She was his everything before she passed. She believed he did not have to be awakened to be her son. That had been enough for her.

Emeric let out a small laugh. A part of him wanted the duke to feel the pain he had felt all those years. To feel the emptiness that he felt before he got stronger.

He was stronger now.

How much stronger?

He closed his eyes. Reached for the familiar feeling of the system and it responded instantly.

He had 104 DP.

It was enough to buy something useful. But not enough to waste.

He closed the shop window. He’d need to be strategic.

He was stronger than he’d been a month ago. Stronger than he’d been a week ago. But still not strong enough.

Not yet.

He closed the window and looked down at Isolde. She was still asleep against his shoulder, her face peaceful in the dim light of the coach.

He pressed a kiss to the top of her head.

"I’m going to get stronger," he whispered. "I’m going to save you. I promise."

She stirred slightly, murmuring something in her sleep, and nestled closer.

He held her tighter and watched the city lights pass by.
