Chapter 98: Chapter 98 | Five Fingers

"He lost the first one," Dorothy said. "On a procedural point. He spent four years understanding why. The second time he knew exactly which points to close."

She looked at Shira.

"Today," she said, "is the second time."

Shira looked at her.

Dorothy looked at her for a long moment.

She hummed the four notes.

She went back to two-twelve.

Kai closed the door.

He stood in the hallway.

Mira’s board appeared over the kitchen doorframe.

’’Four notes.’’

"Yes," he said.

’’What are they.’’

"I still don’t know," he said.

"Neither do I," she wrote. Then, after a pause: "Ask her next time."

He looked at the board.

"Yes," he said.

The board disappeared.

---

Lunch. Specialty rotation. Both blends.

The formal statement came through on Kai’s phone at twelve-forty. He read it and set the phone in the center of the table and both wives read it.

Shira read it twice.

She set the phone back in the center of the table.

She picked up her spoon.

She ate.

Mira read it once.

She held the board.

She wrote something and held it up but it was facing the wall rather than Kai or Shira.

It said: "The node is in the official record. 8.40hz. Second generation. Confirmed."

She held it toward the wall for a moment.

Then she lowered it.

She ate.

Kai looked at the wall.

He ate.

---

At two Kai said: "Carson Webb wants to meet you both."

Shira looked at the window.

"I know who Carson Webb is," she said.

"He went public with the forty-one minute record," Kai said. "He was the first to confirm it."

"I know what he did," Shira said.

She looked at the window.

"He was at Vanguard," she said. "B-rank. Combat-type. Good eyes. He knew what forty-one minutes meant when everyone else was pretending it meant something else."

She looked at the window.

"Tell him he can come," she said.

Kai looked at Mira.

Mira’s board appeared.

"He already knows what time we eat breakfast."

Kai looked at the board.

Shira looked at the board.

The corner of Shira’s mouth moved.

"Yes," she said. "He probably does."

Mira ate.

Her board appeared again two minutes later.

"Tell him the form runs at five-fourteen."

Shira looked at the board.

She looked at Mira.

The underneath expression. Clear and present.

"That’s not necessary," Shira said.

"It means he knows the apartment is occupied," Mira wrote. "And won’t knock before six."

Shira looked at the board.

She looked at her bowl.

"Practical," she said.

*Yes.*

"Fine," Shira said. "Tell him."

Mira ate with the satisfied quality of someone who had just won something small and entirely reasonable.

Kai sent the message to Denko.

---

That afternoon Shira went back to the second bedroom.

Kai was at the table with the prosecution documentation when he felt it through the Nerve Sense. The form starting. Not the count version. The full sequence. Shoulder rotation. Elbow. Forearm. Signal building toward the cutoff.

Crossing.

Fifteen beats. Sixteen. Seventeen. Eighteen. Nineteen. Twenty. Twenty-one.

She held twenty-one.

He sat at the table and did not move.

From Mira’s room the RF-7 opened at eight-forty hertz. Then her voice, running the second phrase of the album. Not the first phrase. The second one, the harder one with the extended hold.

Forty seconds. Forty-five. Fifty.

She held fifty and let it end.

She ran it again.

The node in the official record at eight-forty hertz.

Her voice at eight-forty hertz.

Kai sat at the table and listened to both of them and did not think about the specialty rotation or the noodle shop or Dorothy’s four notes or all five fingers moving deliberately on the kitchen counter in the morning light.

---

At five Mira came out.

She had the board and she sat at the table and looked at Kai.

She wrote: "Shira."

He looked toward the hallway.

The form had stopped twenty minutes ago. The apartment was quiet.

"She’s in the second bedroom," he said.

"I know,"Mira wrote. "She’s been in there for three hours."

He looked toward the hallway.

"She’s thinking," he said.

"I know," the board came back. "What are you doing."

He looked at the documentation.

"Not much," he said.

She held the board.

She wrote: "The node is confirmed. The prosecution proceeds. Denko has everything. Carson Webb is coming."

"Yes," he said.

"So what are you not doing."

He looked at the documentation.

He looked at her.

"I keep picking up the pen," he said, "and then not writing anything."

Mira looked at the board.

She looked at the wall near his shoulder.

She wrote very slowly.

She held it up.

It said: "The node was there the whole time. Before the expedition. Before the filing. Before you. It was always going to be found. It just needed someone to keep looking."

He looked at the board.

She held it for a moment.

She lowered it.

She wrote one more thing.

"You kept looking."

He looked at the board.

She set it face-down on the table.

She got up.

She went to the kitchen.

He heard the kettle.

Three minutes later she came back with the tea and set a cup in front of him.

She set one at Shira’s empty spot.

She took hers and went back to her room.

He looked at the three cups.

He looked at Mira’s closed door.

He sat there for a while.

---

Shira came out at five-thirty.

She saw the tea at her spot.

She sat down.

She picked it up.

She drank it.

She set it down.

She looked at the table.

"Mira," she said.

"Yes," Kai said.

She looked at the table.

"She made the tea," Shira said.

"Yes," Kai said.

Shira looked at the table.

The board appeared from under Mira’s door. It slid out slowly into the hallway.

It stopped.

It sat there.

Shira looked at it.

She got up.

She went to the hallway.

She picked it up.

It said: *The specialty rotation is ready when you want it.*

Shira looked at the board.

She looked at Mira’s door.

She knocked once.

The door opened.

Mira had the marker.

Shira held the board out to her.

Mira took it.

They looked at each other for a moment.

Shira said: "Thank you."

Mira looked at her.

She capped the marker.

She held the board up one more time.

It said: "The tea was at the right temperature."

Shira looked at the board.

The corner of her mouth moved.

"Yes," she said. "It was."

She went back to the table.

Mira closed the door.

---

That evening the system chimed.

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 4.2 / 10. 』

『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 4.2 / 10. 』

『 MULTIPLIER: ×2,000. ACTIVE. 』

『 The system notes: 』

『 The node is confirmed. 』

『 The prosecution proceeds. 』

『 Shira Voss moved all five fingers at the kitchen counter at seven in the morning. 』

『 She put her hand back in her lap. 』

『 Host kept making the specialty rotation. 』

『 The system notes that neither of them said anything. 』

『 The system notes this is the correct thing. 』

『 Mira Elys held the board toward the wall and wrote: the node is in the official record. 』

『 The system notes she was not writing to the wall. 』

『 Mira Elys made tea for three people. 』

『 She did this without being asked. 』

『 She set Shira Voss’s cup at her spot. 』

『 She set Host’s cup in front of him. 』

『 She took hers and went to her room. 』

『 The system notes that this is the first time Mira Elys has made tea. 』

『 Shira Voss said: thank you. 』

『 Mira Elys said: the tea was at the right temperature. 』

『 The system notes: it was. 』

『 The canyon dungeon node is in the official record. 』

『 Tomorrow Carson Webb is coming. 』

『 The form runs at five-fourteen. 』

『 He knows not to knock before six. 』

Kai read it.

He put his phone down.

He looked at the table.

Three cups. His half-finished. Shira’s empty. Mira’s door closed.

He washed the cups.

He put them away.

He went to bed.

He lay in the dark and thought about five fingers moving deliberately on a kitchen counter and a board held toward a wall that was not really for the wall and tea made by someone who had never made it before and the right temperature and thank you.

Small things.

The smallest things.

He closed his eyes
