Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 95 | Husband
Chapter 95: Chapter 95 | Husband
The investigation went public at seven in the morning.
Kai found out through Denko’s call at seven-oh-four.
"The hero authority issued a formal bulletin," Denko said. He sounded like a man who had been awake for thirty-six hours and was entirely at peace with that. "Criminal prosecution confirmed. Renmei family dungeon access licenses revoked. The patriarch under formal investigation for conspiracy. And—" A pause. "The canyon dungeon unsealing is confirmed for next week. The investigation team goes in Monday."
Kai stood at the kitchen counter.
"The node," he said.
"Will be confirmed by Tuesday at the latest," Denko said. "When it is, every count in the criminal complaint becomes provable in a way documentation alone cannot achieve." Another pause. "Three hero news sites have already picked up the bulletin. By noon it will be everywhere."
"Their names," Kai said.
"Yes," Denko said. "Shira Voss and Mira Elys. Both names. In the bulletin. In the news sites. Forty-one minutes corrected record. The Resonance node discovery credited to the Gift assessment." He paused once more. "They wanted them forgotten. It did not work."
Kai looked at the hallway.
Both doors closed. Both wives still in their rooms. Neither of them knew yet.
"Thank you," he said.
He hung up.
He stood at the counter for a moment.
Then he went to make the specialty rotation.
---
Shira found out from her phone at seven-forty.
She had been running the form in the second bedroom. Kai felt her stop through the Nerve Sense , the signal cutting off mid-sequence, the particular stillness of someone who has read something and gone somewhere in their head.
She came out at eight with the phone in her hand.
She did not say anything.
She sat at the table and looked at the specialty rotation Kai had set out and picked up her spoon.
Halfway through she said, to her bowl: "Three sites."
"Yes," Kai said.
"At seven."
"Denko called at seven-oh-four."
She ate.
"By noon," she said.
"More," he said.
She looked at her bowl.
She ate.
---
Mira came out at eight-fifteen.
She had the RF-7 case and the board and the marker and she sat down and looked at her bowl and did not write anything for a full minute.
Then the board appeared.
’’The bulletin.’’
"Yes," Kai said.
’cBoth our names.’’
"Yes."
’’The node credited to the Gift assessment.’c
"Yes."
She held the board.
She set it face-down on the table.
She ate two spoonfuls.
She picked up the marker.
She held the board toward Shira.
It said: ’’They said your record first.’’
Shira looked at the board.
She looked at her bowl.
"Yes," she said.
Mira lowered the board.
She ate.
The table was quiet for a while. Not the empty kind. The full kind, the kind that had something warm and large settled into it that did not need naming.
Then Mira’s board appeared again.
She held it toward the center of the table.
It said: ’’Today.’’
Kai looked at the board.
Shira looked at the board.
’’The noodle shop,’’ it said. ’’Green awning. Today.’’
Shira looked at the board.
She looked at Mira.
Mira was eating. Deeply, peacefully eating. The board sitting there between them.
Shira looked at Kai.
Kai looked at his bowl.
"Today," he said.
---
Dorothy Callahan knocked at nine.
No container. Just herself, in the hallway, with the reading glasses on her head and an expression he had not seen on her before. Not the checking expression. Not the approval expression.
Something quieter than both.
He opened the door.
She looked at him.
"I saw the bulletin," she said.
He waited.
"My husband filed his complaint in his nineteenth year," she said. "I told you. They returned it. He filed again. Four times over two years." She looked at him. "The dungeon he filed about was never properly investigated. I watched him stop. I watched him carry it until he died."
She looked at the hallway past him.
Shira at the window. Mira at the kitchen doorway with the board.
"This morning," Dorothy said, "when I read the bulletin." She stopped. She looked at the floor joins in the hallway. "I thought. He would have been glad."
Kai looked at her.
She looked at the floor joins.
"The joins are still level," she said.
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked up.
"Are you going somewhere today," she said.
"The noodle shop," he said. "Green awning."
She looked at him.
"All three of you," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She looked at him for a moment.
"Good," she said.
She turned.
She stopped.
"Kai," she said.
He waited.
"My husband would have liked you," she said.
She went back to two-twelve.
He stood in the hallway.
He stood there for a while.
From the kitchen Mira’s board appeared over the doorframe.
’’She called you by your name.’’
"Yes," he said.
’’First time.’’
He looked at the board.
"Yes," he said.
The board disappeared.
---
They left at noon.
Accessible cab. Shira in the new chair. Mira with the cane and the RF-7 case. Kai with nothing in his hands because there was nothing to carry.
The medical district moved past the windows.
Nobody said much.
Then Shira said, to the window: "The comment sections."
Mira’s board appeared immediately.
’’Don’t.’’
"Three hundred on one site alone," Shira said.
’’Don’t read them.’’
"I already did."
Mira held the board.
She wrote: ’’All of them?’’
"Most of them."
’’What did they say.’’
Shira looked at the window.
"They remember us," she said.
Mira held the board.
She lowered it.
She looked at the wall near Shira’s shoulder.
She wrote very slowly.
She held it up where Shira could read it without turning her head.
It said: ’’I remember us too.’’
Shira looked at the board.
She looked at it for a long moment.
Then she looked at the window.
"Yes," she said.
---
The noodle shop.
Green awning. East commercial block. Exactly as described.
Kai had called ahead. Corner table. Accessible. They were seated immediately.
The menu was paper. Old-style, the laminated kind with the photos slightly faded from years of handling. Mira ran her fingers along the edge of it. Not reading it. Just holding it.
Shira looked at the menu for thirty seconds and put it down.
"The same thing Dexter always ordered," Mira’s board appeared.
Kai looked at the board.
