Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 92 | Cara Venn
Chapter 92: Chapter 92 | Cara Venn
The letter arrived on a Tuesday.
Denko called first.
"She contacted me this morning," he said. "Cara Venn. She found the filing through the hero authority public record. She wanted to know if Shira Voss’s name was real or a clerical error."
Kai was at the table with the documentation.
"What did you tell her," he said.
"I told her it was real," Denko said. "She asked if she could send a letter. I gave her the address." A pause. "I should have asked you first."
"No," Kai said. "You shouldn’t have."
Denko was quiet for a moment.
"She sounded very young," he said.
"She’s twenty-three," Kai said.
"Yes," Denko said.
He hung up.
===
The letter came that afternoon.
Standard envelope. No return address. Denko’s office address on the back as the relay point.
Kai brought it to Shira’s door.
Three knocks.
"Come in."
She was at the desk. The notebook open. She looked at the envelope in his hand.
He set it on the desk.
"Cara Venn," he said.
She looked at the envelope.
He left.
He closed the door behind him.
====
He made tea.
He brought Mira’s cup to her door and knocked once. She opened it and took the cup without the board appearing. She looked at him.
He said: "Cara Venn sent a letter."
Mira held the cup.
She looked at the wall near his shoulder.
She closed the door.
He stood in the hallway.
From Shira’s room — silence. Not the form. Not the physio sheet. Just silence.
He went to the table and sat with his tea and the documentation and did not look at the hallway.
====
Forty minutes.
Then Shira’s door opened.
She came out.
She positioned herself at the kitchen doorway and looked at the table.
She did not look at him directly.
"She filed once," Shira said. "Eight months after the expedition. They returned it. Procedural grounds." She looked at the kitchen wall. "She filed again four months later. They returned it again. Different reason."
Kai looked at his tea.
"She stopped after the second time," Shira said. "She thought she was doing something wrong. That her application was genuinely missing something. She spent three months asking colleagues what she had omitted." She was quiet. "Nobody could tell her. Because there was nothing missing. The filings were being returned deliberately."
He looked at his tea.
"She’s been working as a civilian weather consultant for two years," Shira said. "She uses the wind-type Gift in the readings. She says it’s the only thing she kept from before."
He looked at the table.
Shira looked at the kitchen wall.
"She wants to know if I’m actually running again," she said. "The form. She heard through a colleague who heard through the investigation."
He looked at her.
"Word travels," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"She said—" She stopped.
She started again.
"She said she was glad someone kept going," she said. "That she hadn’t been able to. And that it helped to know someone did."
The kitchen was very quiet.
He looked at his tea.
She looked at the wall.
"Tell Denko she can send another letter," she said.
He said: "The first letter already arrived."
She looked at him.
"Then tell him she can send another one," she said.
He looked at her.
She went back to her room.
====
He sat at the table.
He sat there for a while.
Mira came out at six.
She had the board.
She sat at the table and set the board face-up.
It said: Did she ask about the form or did Shira tell her.
"Shira told her," Kai said.
Mira held the board.
Good, she wrote.
She ate dinner in silence. Not the heavy kind. The kind that had something decided sitting in it.
Halfway through she pushed the board toward him.
It said: Joel Marsh used to write letters. To the hero authority, to the classification board, to the expedition coordinators. After the canyon. He wrote eight letters in fourteen months.
Kai looked at the board.
They were all returned, it said. Different reasons. Always a different reason.
He looked at the board.
I didn’t know he was writing them until Dana Marsh told me, she wrote. He never said. He just kept writing.
He looked at the board.
She took it back.
She ate.
She did not write anything else.
====
After dinner Denko called.
"Cara Venn’s reinstatement application," he said. "I mentioned it to her today when she called. The program exists — it was established as part of the prosecution fallout. Heroes whose licenses lapsed due to Renmei-related classification interference are eligible to reapply under expedited review."
"She qualifies," Kai said.
"She qualifies," Denko confirmed. "I sent her the forms. She said she would think about it."
"She’ll file," Kai said.
Denko was quiet.
"You sound certain," he said.
"She sent a letter today," Kai said. "She didn’t have to do that. She could have just read the public record and kept quiet." He looked at the hallway. "People who send letters file applications."
Denko was quiet for another moment.
"The dungeon unseals in eight days," he said.
"I know," Kai said.
"When the investigation team confirms the node the prosecution timeline accelerates. The formal verdict hearing gets moved."
"I know," Kai said.
"There will be press," Denko said. "When the node is confirmed. The hero news sites have been watching the investigation. The moment the confirmation goes public both wives’ names will be everywhere."
"I know," Kai said.
"Are they ready for that," Denko said.
Kai looked at the hallway.
Shira’s door. Closed. From behind it the form was running. Not the second bedroom — the main room. He could feel the signal through the Nerve Sense. Seventeen beats. Eighteen. Nineteen.
Mira’s door. Closed. The RF-7 at eight-forty hertz. Then her voice, low and steady, following the third phrase of the album. Forty seconds. Forty-five. She held it and let it end naturally.
He looked at the hallway for a moment.
"Yes," he said.
Denko hung up.
====
At nine Kai was clearing the table when Shira came out.
She did not go to the window.
She came to the kitchen doorway and stopped there.
She had the letter in her hand.
She held it out toward him.
He looked at it.
"She left a contact," Shira said. "At the bottom. A frequency she checks for mail."
He took the letter.
He looked at the bottom.
A frequency address. The civilian communication system for non-licensed Gift users.
"She checks it every Tuesday," Shira said.
He looked at the address.
"Today is Tuesday," he said.
"Yes," Shira said.
He looked at the address.
He looked at her.
She went back to her room.
He sat at the table with the letter and the frequency address and the sound of the form starting again through the wall — not the count version, not the practice version, just the form running because she wanted to run it.
He got up.
He went to his desk.
He wrote a letter.
It was not long. Six lines. He said the form was still running. He said the signal crossed twenty-one beats on the best attempt last week. He said the next attempt was tomorrow morning at five-fourteen.
He signed it with Shira’s name.
He sent it to the Tuesday frequency.
He sat at the desk.
From Shira’s room — the form stopped.
A long pause.
Then it started again.
====
The system chimed at ten.
『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 3.8 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 3.8 / 10. 』 『 MULTIPLIER: ×2,000. ACTIVE. 』 『 The system notes: 』 『 Cara Venn sent a letter. 』 『 She filed twice and stopped. She thought she was doing something wrong. 』 『 She was twenty-three and one year out of Vanguard and she stopped because nobody told her there was nothing missing. 』 『 Shira Voss read the letter for forty minutes alone. 』 『 She came out and told Kai what was in it. 』 『 She did not have to do that. 』 『 She left the frequency address. 』 『 She did not have to do that either. 』 『 Kai wrote six lines and signed them with Shira’s name. 』 『 The system notes this is the first time Host has written something on behalf of a wife. 』 『 The system notes she let him. 』 『 Joel Marsh wrote eight letters. 』 『 Mira Elys told Kai this tonight. 』 『 She had not told anyone before. 』 『 The dungeon unseals in eight days. 』 『 The system is paying attention. 』
Kai read it.
He put the phone down.
He sat at the desk.
Eight days.
