Chapter 90: Chapter 90 | What Mira’s Board Said II

He looked at her.

She picked up the marker. She capped it. She looked at the wall.

He said: "Mira."

She looked at the wall.

He said: "Thank you."

She held the board in her lap.

She uncapped the marker.

She wrote something slowly.

She held it up facing the wall rather than him.

It said: You’re welcome, Kai.

His name. Both words. Written deliberately, the letters even, the way she wrote things she had been practicing.

He looked at the board.

She lowered it.

She went back to her room.

He sat at the table.

He sat there for a while.

===

At two Shira came to the kitchen doorway.

She looked at the spare board on the counter.

"You read it," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"The fourth beat."

"I’ll fix it," he said.

She looked at him.

"Show me," she said.

He stood up. He moved to the center of the kitchen. He ran the form from the first movement. Shoulder rotation. Elbow. Forearm angle. Signal building. Third beat. Fourth beat.

"Stop," she said.

He stopped.

"You felt it," she said.

"Yes," he said.

"Your shoulder rotates slightly on the fourth beat. Just slightly. But it breaks the elbow alignment. The elbow drops because the shoulder moved first."

He stood with the form held at the fourth beat.

"The shoulder initiates before the forearm is set," he said.

"Yes," she said. "You’ve been doing it since the stairwell. The impact changed something in your initiation sequence and you compensated without noticing."

He looked at his arm.

"The brace," he said.

"The brace changed your weight distribution," she said. "You adjusted everything else around it and the shoulder sequence shifted."

He lowered his arm.

"How long," he said.

"Three days," she said. "Since the brace."

He looked at the counter.

"Run it again," she said. "Shoulder stays fixed through the fourth beat. The forearm sets first."

He ran it.

He felt the difference immediately. The forearm setting before the shoulder rotated. The elbow staying level through the fourth beat. The signal traveling differently, more direct, less interference.

"Better," she said.

He ran it again.

"Again," she said.

He ran it.

"Again."

He ran it four more times. By the fourth the sequence was consistent, the shoulder staying fixed, the forearm setting, the elbow level.

"That’s the correction," she said.

He lowered his arm.

She was looking at him with the analytical expression. But underneath it something else was present that he had started to recognize. Not the armor. Not the soft version. The one that came after both of those.

"Three days," he said. "You waited three days to tell me."

"I wanted to see if you’d catch it yourself," she said.

"Did you think I would."

She looked at the doorframe.

"No," she said.

He looked at her.

"You should have caught it yourself," she said. "But you were managing the documentation and Mira’s filings and the brace and the ribs and you didn’t notice." She looked at the doorframe. "So I wrote it on the board."

He looked at the board on the counter.

"Before six," he said.

"You wake up at six-thirty," she said. "I wanted it there when you came out."

He looked at the board.

He looked at her.

She looked at the doorframe.

"Three days," he said.

She said nothing.

"You’ve been watching my form for three days with that correction in your head," he said.

She looked at the doorframe.

"Yes," she said.

He looked at the board.

He picked it up.

He handed it back to her.

"Next time," he said. "Tell me the same day."

She took the board.

She looked at him.

The underneath expression. Full and still.

"Yes," she said.

She went back to the living room.

He stood in the kitchen.

He looked at where she had been standing in the doorway.

He stood there for a while.

===

That evening the system chimed while Kai was at the table.

『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 3.5 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 3.5 / 10. 』 『 MULTIPLIER: ×2,000. ACTIVE. 』 『 The system notes: 』 『 Shira Voss wrote the elbow correction on the spare board at five-forty a.m. and left it on the counter. 』 『 She has been holding that correction for three days. 』 『 She held it because she wanted Host to find it himself. 』 『 When he did not she wrote it down and left it where he would see it first thing. 』 『 The system notes: that is not how someone behaves toward a person they are indifferent to. 』 『 Mira Elys wrote Host’s name today. Both words. On the board. Held toward the wall. 』 『 She has written it on scrap paper seventeen times. 』 『 Today was the first time she wrote it for him to see. 』 『 The system notes the difference. 』 『 Dorothy Callahan’s husband attended forty-one committee hearings. 』 『 The system notes this number without comment. 』 『 The hearing is in three days. 』 『 The node documentation is in the record. 』 『 Denko filed the counter at eight-fifty this morning. 』 『 The system is satisfied with today. 』

Kai read it.

He put the phone down.

From the living room the form started again. Not the count version. The late evening version that was slower and more deliberate, like she was going through the corrections she had just given him and running them on herself to see what they changed.

Shoulder fixed. Forearm first. Elbow level through the fourth beat.

He could feel the difference in the Nerve Sense from where he sat.

She ran it twice and then stopped.

Then from Mira’s room the RF-7 started. The receiving channel opening at eight-forty hertz. Then her voice following the second phrase of the album.

Not the first phrase.

The second one. The harder one.

Thirty-eight seconds. Forty-one. Forty-four.

She held forty-four and let it end naturally.

She started it again.

Kai sat at the table and looked at the spare board he had put back on the counter and thought about five-forty in the morning and a marker pressed harder than usual and three days of watching him miss the same correction.

He thought about Mira tracking the motion pattern for six weeks without telling him.

He thought about the node documentation sitting in the record and Denko’s counter filed at eight-fifty and the hearing in three days.

He got up.

He went to Shira’s door.

Three knocks.

"Come in."

She was at the desk. The notebook was open. She did not close it.

He looked at the page.

Not training notes. Not the expedition roster. Something else — a list of names. Written in her handwriting. The wind-type provisional Cara Venn at the top. Joel Marsh below it. Dana Holt. Reese Calloway. Five more names he did not recognize.

"The expedition team," he said.

"Full roster," she said. "Denko sent it last week. I’ve been going through the classification records for each of them."

He looked at the list.

"All of them had classification irregularities in the eighteen months after the canyon," she said. "Not just us. Not just the two additional heroes who filed. Every member of the expedition team had at least one dungeon assessment altered in the period following."

He looked at the list.

"They were systematic," he said.

"Yes," she said. "Anyone who was there. Anyone who could have spoken."

He looked at the list.

"Does Denko know," he said.

"He knows," she said. "It’s in the documentation."

He looked at the list.

"Cara Venn," he said.

"Filed once. Blocked. Stopped."

"The others."

"Three filed and were blocked. Four never filed. Two left the hero system entirely within six months."

He looked at the list.

He looked at her.

"This goes in the hearing," he said.

"Denko has it," she said.

"All of it."

"All of it," she said.

She looked at the list.

"They thought they were managing it," she said. "Case by case. Blocking here, transferring there. They didn’t understand that every person they blocked was a thread. And threads don’t disappear. They just wait."

He looked at the list.

"Three days," he said.

"Three days," she said.

He went back to the table.

He sat down.

He looked at the documentation spread in front of him.

He picked up his pen.

He worked until midnight.
