Chapter 87: Chapter 87 | Rejection

Kai made breakfast one-handed.

The left arm was in a brace , Dr. Harlen had confirmed two cracked ribs and a soft tissue strain in the shoulder at the clinic that morning. Nothing broken. Nothing that would not heal. He had been given a compression wrap, a brace, and a list of things not to do for three weeks. He had read the list. He had put it in his jacket pocket.

He made the specialty rotation one-handed.

It took longer. The second blend required a different technique to steep correctly without the standard motion. He figured it out.

He brought the bowls to the table.

Shira came out and looked at the brace and said nothing.

Mira came out and looked at the brace and her board came up immediately.

Dr. Harlen said three weeks.

"I know," Kai said.

You read the list he gave you.

"Yes."

And.

"And I’m making breakfast."

She held the board. She set it down. She picked up her spoon.

Shira said, to her bowl: "Two ribs."

"Cracked. Not broken."

"There’s a difference."

"Yes," Kai said.

She ate.

The table was quiet for a while. Outside the window the medical district was doing its morning things , delivery vehicles, early clinic staff, the particular quality of light that came through the corner windows before nine.

Mira’s board appeared.

The third operative. Did Denko identify him.

"Last night," Kai said. "All three are confirmed Renmei-contracted. Independent security firm, three-month retainer, the contract was signed four days after the criminal complaint was filed."

Four days.

"The day after the formal acknowledgment hit the hero authority system."

They were always going to do this.

"Yes," Kai said.

They just waited for confirmation that the complaint was real.

"Yes."

She lowered the board.

Shira said: "The third one called someone before Kai reached him."

"Yes," Kai said.

"Which means the family knew within minutes."

"Yes."

"Which means whatever they do next—"

"Will come fast," Kai said. "Denko is already filing the attack as an additional exhibit. The criminal complaint classification upgrades — physical intimidation of witnesses, obstruction. The Renmei family’s legal team filed a response this morning at seven."

Shira looked at him.

"Seven," she said.

"They were ready," Kai said. "They had the response drafted before the attack happened."

The table was very quiet.

Mira’s board: they planned to have something to file regardless of the outcome.

"Yes," Kai said. "If the attack succeeded and we disappeared the response was one thing. Since it didn’t—"

They file something else.

"Yes."

What did they file.

"A motion to have the criminal complaint dismissed on the grounds that the physical confrontation , their words constitutes a provocation by the filing parties designed to manufacture additional charges."

Shira set her spoon down.

She looked at the window.

"They’re saying we arranged it," she said.

"Yes."

"We arranged to be attacked in our own apartment."

"Yes."

She looked at the window for a long time.

Then she picked her spoon up and ate.

Mira’s board appeared. She held it toward the center of the table.

What did Denko say.

"He said the motion will be rejected before lunch," Kai said. "The operative contracts were signed four days after the complaint. The attack was documented by building security. The operatives are in custody. There is no mechanism by which the committee will entertain the motion."

Before lunch.

"His exact words."

Good.

She lowered the board.

She ate the rest of her rice.

====

Denko called at eleven-forty.

"Motion rejected," he said. "Ten minutes ago. The committee didn’t deliberate . they issued a summary rejection. First time I’ve seen a summary rejection in fourteen years of practice."

"What does that mean," Kai said.

"It means they read it and found it so without merit that deliberation was unnecessary." A pause. "It also means the committee is paying attention. They’re watching this case the way committees watch cases that are going to matter. The Renmei family just told the committee they’re willing to file frivolous motions. That’s information."

"The hearing date," Kai said.

"Accelerated," Denko said. "By one week. The attack, the motion, the summary rejection , the committee moved the formal hearing forward. You’ll receive the official notification this afternoon."

Kai looked at the window.

"One week earlier," he said.

"The Renmei family made a mistake," Denko said. "Two mistakes. The attack and then the motion. Each one gave the committee more reason to move faster."

"How are the operatives," Kai said.

"In custody. Talking." A pause. "The third one especially. He made a call before you reached him in the stairwell — we have the record of that call. The recipient is a number registered to a private security coordination firm that has appeared in two other Renmei-adjacent investigations. We’re working on the connection."

"Good," Kai said.

"How are the ribs," Denko said.

"Fine."

"Kai."

"Two cracked. I’ve been cleared to function."

"The list Dr. Harlen gave you—"

"Is in my pocket," Kai said.

Denko was quiet for a moment. "Tell both wives the hearing has been moved. They should hear it from you, not from a notification."

"I will," Kai said.

He hung up.

====

He went to Shira’s room.

Three knocks.

"Come in."

She was at the desk. Not the physio sheet , the notebook. She closed it when he entered but not quickly. She had not been trying to hide it. She just closed it the way you close something when a conversation is starting.

He told her. Motion rejected before lunch. Hearing accelerated by one week. The third operative’s call connecting to a coordination firm in two other investigations.

She listened without interrupting.

When he finished she looked at the closed notebook.

"One week," she said.

"Yes."

"The committee moved it themselves."

"Yes."

She looked at the desk.

"The motion," she said. "They filed it knowing it would be rejected."

"Denko thinks so."

"Then why file it."

"To see how fast the committee would move," Kai said. "To test whether the committee was paying attention."

She was quiet.

"And the answer," she said.

"Ten minutes," Kai said. "Summary rejection."

She looked at the notebook.

"Good," she said.
