Chapter 58: Chapter 58 | Five Days Is Nothing!

"At least thirty minutes that I’m aware of."

"Are they moving."

"No. Watching."

"Your wives are inside."

"Yes."

Han Dori was quiet for a moment.

"Licensed heroes with protective jurisdiction can request district security monitoring," he said. "You’re provisional but the jurisdiction is on record. File the request through the hero authority portal. It creates an official log. Surveillance operatives operating near a protected residence under hero jurisdiction — that gets district attention fast."

"How fast," Kai said.

"Fast enough," Han Dori said. "File it now. While they’re still there."

Kai filed it.

The portal was straightforward. Address, jurisdiction reference number, description of surveillance activity, time logged. He submitted it and got a confirmation number in forty seconds.

He sent the confirmation number to Denko.

Denko replied immediately: Good. That’s on the district record now. They’ll have to be careful.

Kai looked at the window.

The first watcher was still at the corner.

’Careful,’ he thought. ’Not gone. Careful.’

He stood up.

He went to Shira’s door and knocked.

"Come in," she said.

She was at the desk. She had not moved from the desk. The physio sheet was open but she had not been reading it — her eyes came up too fast when he entered.

"Two of them," Kai said. "Foundation-connected, three steps removed. They’re watching, not moving. I’ve filed a district security monitoring request through the hero authority portal. It’s on record. They’ll know we know."

Shira looked at him.

"That changes their calculus," she said.

"Yes."

"They can’t move without the district noticing now."

"Correct."

She looked at the physio sheet. Then back at him.

"Five days," she said.

"Five days," Kai said. "After the hearing, the Foundation has nothing. Whatever they’re trying to build — they need to build it before Thursday."

Shira was quiet.

"They’ll try something," she said. Not alarmed. Analyzing.

"Probably," Kai said. "I want you to know in advance so you’re not surprised if something happens."

She looked at him steadily.

"What kind of something," she said.

"I don’t know yet," Kai said. "But I’m going to find out."

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then she said, quietly: "The canyon dungeon. When I cleared it. There were two other teams in the dungeon at the same time. Different routes. We didn’t cross paths." She paused. "I always wondered if the routing was deliberate. If someone needed us separated."

Kai looked at her.

"The incident," he said.

"The incident was three years later," she said. "But I’ve thought about the routing sometimes." She looked at the physio sheet. "Probably nothing."

"I’ll look into it," Kai said.

She shook her head once. "Don’t do that now. One thing at a time."

"After the hearing," he said.

"After the hearing," she agreed.

He went to Mira’s door.

Three knocks.

It opened.

Mira was standing with the board already written.

She held it up before he could speak.

Two. Foundation connected. Watching. You filed district monitoring.

He looked at the board.

"Denko told you," he said.

She wrote: He messaged me ten minutes ago. He said you’d brief me after Shira.

Kai made a mental note to tell Denko to brief in parallel next time.

"I was going in order," Kai said.

She wrote: I know. I’m not criticizing. I’m confirming I have the information.

"Good," Kai said. "Do you have questions."

She held the marker. She thought for a moment.

Then she wrote: What do they want.

"Information right now," Kai said. "Before the hearing — probably a pressure point. Something they can use."

She wrote: On you or on us.

"I don’t know yet," Kai said. "I’m working on it."

She looked at him for a moment. The particular stillness of someone processing something she wasn’t going to write.

Then the board came up.

Are you worried.

He looked at the board.

’Am I worried,’ he thought.

He had been calm since he noticed the watcher. He had made lunch, notified Denko, recalibrated the dampener, filed the district monitoring, briefed Han Dori, briefed both wives. He had moved through each step the way he moved through everything — without rushing, without stopping.

But underneath that.

"Yes," he said. "Not for me."

She looked at him.

He looked back.

"Five days," he said. "I just need five more days."

She held the board.

She wrote something slowly.

She held it up.

We’ve lasted three years. Five days is nothing.

He read it.

He read it again.

"Yes," he said. "You’re right."

She lowered the board.

She closed the door.

He stood in the hallway.

’We’ve lasted three years,’ he thought. ’She said we.’

He pressed his palm to the wall.

Both rhythms. Both steady. Both of them in their rooms with information he had given them and a clear picture of what the next five days looked like.

Neither of them had panicked.

Neither of them would.

’They’ve been handling worse than this for three years,’ he thought. ’Two surveillance operatives on the building is nothing compared to what they’ve already survived.’

He went back to the table.

He opened the notebook.

He wrote the assessor’s name.

Underneath it he wrote: Cross-family authority. Joint expedition. Deliberate classification alteration. Target list — why these two specifically.

He looked at the question.

He didn’t have an answer yet.

He would.

Evening.

After dinner, after the dishes, both wives in their rooms.

Kai sat on the couch. He pressed his palms to the cushion and expanded the Nerve Sense to full external range.

The first watcher was gone.

The second was still at the east corner. Different person from three hours ago — the rhythm was different. They had rotated again.

’Professional,’ he thought. ’Patience.’

He looked at the ceiling.

Five days.

The system chimed — the soft single tone, not a financial notification.

『 The system notes: 』 『 Two surveillance operatives. Foundation-connected. Watching the building. 』 『 Host noticed them, verified them, filed district monitoring, briefed both wives, and made the apartment safer — all within ninety minutes of first detection. 』 『 The system notes this not because Host needs to be told he handled it well. 』 『 But because both wives heard his voice through the door before he knocked. 』 『 Shira had already put the physio sheet away. 』 『 Mira had already written the first board message before he finished the second knock. 』 『 They were ready before he arrived. 』 『 The system notes this because Host should know that both of them were already moving toward him before he came to them. 』

Kai read it.

He put the phone down.

Through the wall — Shira. The deliberate rhythm. She was doing the shoulder rotation sequence, the Gale Strike preparatory form, working through it methodically in the dark.

Through Mira’s door — the audio reader. Low. And then the Resonance Echo found it.

Not the Gift frequency tonight.

Her voice. At fourteen percent function. The shape of words rather than sounds — the vocal cords moving through syllables she was not producing yet but practicing the architecture of.

He couldn’t hear what words.

But she was practicing words.

’You’re getting ready,’ he thought. ’Both of you. In your own ways. Getting ready for what comes next.’

He pressed both palms flat to the cushion.

He lay back.

Five days.

He was still awake an hour later when the second watcher rotated out and a third came in.

He tracked the new rhythm.

Filed it in his awareness.

Kept watch until his own eyes finally closed sometime past midnight.
