Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 37 | Gearing Up!
Chapter 37: Chapter 37 | Gearing Up!
Day one of ten.
Kai was up at four-fifteen.
He moved quietly through the dark apartment to the living room and began.
Nerve Sense drills first. He sat on the floor with his back against the couch and expanded the active focus outward in rings. Five meters. Ten. Fifteen. He held it at fifteen and catalogued everything within range. Both wife rhythms through the walls. The couple two floors up whose sleep patterns he had learned without trying. The old man in the apartment beside theirs who woke at precisely four every morning and sat in his chair by the window for an hour before going back to bed.
He tracked all of them simultaneously and held the awareness steady.
After thirty minutes he stood up.
Gale Strike Echo drills next.
He moved to the kitchen doorway where there was a small alcove between the frame and the wall. He had put a folded towel there three days ago as a target. He practiced the rotation quietly — forearm initiating, elbow locked through the full cycle the way Shira had told him at lunch yesterday, waiting for the completion point before release.
The displaced air was small. He was not trying for force. He was trying for consistency.
He did it forty times.
On the thirty-sixth attempt something clicked in the mechanical feeling of it and the output was noticeably cleaner than the thirty-fifth. He did the last four attempting to replicate that sensation.
Three of the four matched it.
He noted that in the notebook.
Day 1. 40 reps. Consistent from rep 36. Elbow lock is the variable. Lock earlier in the rotation cycle.
He put the notebook down and started the kettle.
=======
Breakfast.
Shira came to the table and looked at his notebook on the counter.
She looked at Kai.
"You were up at four," she said.
"Four-fifteen," he said.
"I heard you at four," she said.
He put the bowl in front of her.
"The alcove in the kitchen doorway," Shira said. "The displaced air from the rotation hits the frame at a specific frequency. I can hear it."
Kai looked at her.
"You’ve been listening to my training," he said.
"I’ve been lying awake," Shira said. "You’ve been training loudly."
"I thought I was quiet," Kai said.
"You were quiet," Shira said. "I was listening specifically."
Kai sat down.
"Thirty-six reps before consistency," Shira said. "That’s too many. In a dungeon you will not have thirty-five warm-up attempts before you need the ability to work."
"I know," Kai said. "I’m working on it."
"The elbow lock," Shira said. "You’re still initiating it too late. The lock needs to precede the forearm rotation by a full beat. Not simultaneous. Sequential. Lock first, rotate second."
Kai reached for his notebook.
He wrote: Lock precedes rotation by one full beat. Sequential not simultaneous.
Shira ate her breakfast.
Mira came to the table.
She found her bowl. She sat.
She wrote something without preamble and held it up.
I heard you too.
Kai looked at the board.
"Am I waking you up," he said.
No, she wrote. I was already awake.
She lowered the board and ate.
Kai looked between them.
Both of them lying awake listening to him practice in the hallway at four in the morning.
He thought about saying something about it.
He decided against it.
He ate his breakfast.
============
After breakfast he went to the specialty equipment district.
Han Dori’s list had been specific. A resonance dampener, a standard protective layer rated for C-rank dungeon environments, basic mana-resistant gloves. Nothing premium. Functional and reliable.
The equipment district was three train stops east of their apartment. It occupied four city blocks and smelled like processed mana and industrial cleaner.
Kai spent two hours moving between shops with Han Dori’s list on his phone.
The resonance dampener took the longest. The shop assistant was thorough and showed him four options in the functional range. Kai asked the right questions. He chose the third option because its resonance calibration was adjustable, which meant as his Nerve Sense range changed he could recalibrate instead of replacing it entirely.
56,000 coins.
The protective layer was straightforward. Standard grade, C-rank rated, fitted to his measurements in the shop.
38,000 coins.
The gloves were the cheapest component.
8,000 coins.
Total: 102,000 coins.
He noted every item in the notebook with the price.
『 MATERIAL INVESTMENT LOGGED. 』 『 Combat equipment purchase: 102,000 coins. 』 『 Classification: self-investment for wife protection capacity. 』 『 Applicable investment return: yes. Host’s combat ability is a direct function of wife investment returns. Equipment enables deployment of those returns. 』 『 Queued return: 51,000,000 coins at ×500. Pending breakthrough. 』 『 Previous account balance: 228,087,847 coins. 』 『 Current account balance: 227,985,847 coins. 』
Kai looked at the queued return number on the way home.
51 million coins from buying protective gear.
He thought about the mandarin lines in the original breakdown. Three pieces of fruit at forty-two coins each returning 21,000 per mandarin.
The system had no ceiling. He had understood this intellectually since the night the protocol unlocked.
He was still not fully used to it.
He put the phone away and watched the city move past the train window.
=======
He got home at one-fifteen.
He set the equipment bags inside the door and went to the kitchen to start lunch.
From Shira’s room he heard something he had not heard before.
Not the physio sheet sound. Something more physical than that. A rhythmic resistance sound, short and repeated, coming through the wall with a quality that meant effort.
He stood at the kitchen counter and focused the Nerve Sense.
Shira was doing something with her arms that was not the physio sheet exercises. The upper body resistance pattern was different. More comprehensive. Like someone who had decided the sheet was not enough and had gone beyond it.
He said nothing.
He started lunch.
Shira came out at one-thirty. She positioned herself at the table and looked at the bags by the door.
"Equipment," she said.
"Resonance dampener, protective layer, gloves," Kai said. "Han Dori’s list."
She looked at them.
"The resonance dampener," she said. "Which model."
"Adjustable calibration," Kai said. "The third option the shop showed me."
Shira was quiet for a moment.
"That was the right choice," she said. "The fixed calibration models are cheaper but they require full replacement when your sensory range upgrades. Adjustable scales with you."
"That’s what I thought," Kai said.
"It was the right thought," Shira said.
She looked at the bags for another moment.
Then she looked at her bowl.
Mira came to the table.
She sat. Found the bowl. Wrote something before she picked up her spoon.
You went to the equipment district.
"Yes," Kai said.
How much.
"Enough," Kai said.
