Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 29 | Shira’s Is Worried About Kai Doing Too Much
Chapter 29: Chapter 29 | Shira’s Is Worried About Kai Doing Too Much
Her voice, at fourteen percent function, barely more than a breath, the shape of a syllable rather than a full sound, but a voice. Her voice. Making a word.
She stopped immediately.
Her hand went to her throat.
Kai held her left hand and said nothing.
Mira stood in the doorway with her hand at her throat and her face very still.
He could feel her pulse through their joined hands. It had jumped.
She was not going to write anything about what just happened. Not yet.
He was not going to say anything about it either.
He held her hand and breathed through the combined pressure behind his eyes and let the silence be what it was.
After twenty minutes he released her hand carefully.
Mira lowered her hand from her throat.
She picked up her marker.
She wrote something and held it up.
How long will it last.
"I don’t know," Kai said. "As long as it holds."
She nodded once.
She wrote: Go rest.
"I’m fine," Kai said.
She gave him the look she gave him every time he said he was fine when he was not fine, which was the whiteboard equivalent of Shira’s expression when he said enough instead of a number.
"I’ll sit down," Kai said.
She lowered the board. She stepped back into her room and closed the door.
============
Kai went to the couch.
He sat down and pressed both palms flat on the cushions and breathed.
The combined load was sitting behind his eyes and in his spine and in his hands and he processed it methodically , the breathing pattern from the discharge papers, the rhythm from Shira’s pain management section, the same four-second intervals.
After ten minutes it settled into something manageable.
Not gone. Present and continuous and clear.
But manageable.
He opened his phone.
『 INVESTMENT LOGGED. 』
『 ▸ Pain absorption — Shira Voss: 20 minutes. Chronic nerve pain (4/10 baseline) partially transferred to Host. Sincerity rating: ABSOLUTE. 』 『 ▸ Pain absorption — Mira Elys: 20 minutes. Chronic optic compression and headache partially transferred to Host. Sincerity rating: ABSOLUTE. 』
『 HOST NOTE: The system does not calculate returns on this investment yet. 』 『 The return will come when each wife achieves a breakthrough under the clearer conditions the relief provides. 』 『 The return will be enormous. 』 『 But that is not why Host did this. 』 『 The system is aware. 』
『 Non-material return — immediate: 』 『 Nerve Sense upgrade: Host can now feel nerve signal quality, pain levels, and Gift channel status in both wives without physical contact. Passive. Always active. 』 『 Gale Strike Echo Level 2 — wind pressure precision improved. 』 『 Additional: Resonance Echo Level 1 — faint sound frequency perception active. Host can now detect vocal cord activity in Mira Elys at range. 』
『 Bond Level — Shira Voss: 1.8 / 10. 』 『 Bond Level — Mira Elys: 1.8 / 10. 』
『 The system notes: 』 『 Shira Voss is doing her physio exercises right now. 』 『 Without the pain load, the nerve signal is 40% cleaner than yesterday. 』 『 She will not know that number. She will only know that today feels different. 』 『 That is enough. 』
『 Mira Elys has not made another sound yet. 』 『 She will. 』 『 The system is patient. 』
Kai put the phone down.
He pressed his palms to the cushion and felt both of them.
Shira — her room. The physio exercises. The wrist extension. The finger. The signal running cleaner than yesterday with the pain load lifted. He could feel the difference through the upgraded Nerve Sense without even trying.
Mira — her room. The audio reader. Still. Processing something.
He sat with both of them.
The pain behind his eyes was a four out of ten and steady.
He thought: This is one day. This is what they carry every single day without telling anyone.
He thought about Shira annotating the physio sheet in the margin. Making notes on her own recovery without being asked.
He thought about Mira in her room practicing word shapes with fourteen percent vocal function. Doing it alone. Not telling him. Just doing it.
He thought about the oh that had come out of Mira’s throat when the pressure left.
Her voice.
Her actual voice. Half a syllable. Less than a second. More than she had made in seven months.
He sat on the couch with both palms flat and both rhythms under his hands and thought: I can carry this. It’s one day. They carry it every day.
He closed his eyes.
========
Shira came out of her room at two.
She moved into the hallway and stopped when she saw him on the couch.
She looked at his face.
"You’re still carrying it," she said.
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked at him.
"Does it help," she said. Not with the tone that meant she was asking for reassurance. With the tone that meant she wanted an honest answer.
"You did the physio exercises for forty minutes just now," Kai said. "The signal was forty percent cleaner than yesterday."
Shira said nothing.
"The number will be on your clinic assessment next Friday," Kai said. "You’ll see it there."
She looked at the wall.
"That’s not what I asked," she said.
Kai looked at her.
"Yes," he said. "It helps."
She absorbed this.
Then she wheeled herself to the kitchen.
He heard her making tea. Handling the kettle and the cup — still learning to work with the brace but faster than before. Three minutes later she came back with two cups.
She set one on the table beside the couch.
Then she went to her usual spot by the window.
Kai looked at the cup.
He picked it up.
Shira was looking at the window.
They drank their tea.
Neither of them said anything else.
But the cup had been made and placed without being asked and that meant something that didn’t need to be named.
