Investing In My Crippled Heroine Wives For Infinite Rebate
Chapter 121 | The Calloway Foundation’s Name
Chapter 121: Chapter 121 | The Calloway Foundation’s Name
Seven in the morning.
Kai phone lit up.
Hero authority bulletin. Association seal. Senior director’s signature.
He read it once.
’Fourteen years,’ he thought.
He read it again.
’Not one dungeon. Not one family.’
He set the phone down.
He picked it up.
He went to both doors.
====
Shira opened hers before he knocked.
She looked at the phone.
She read it.
She said: "Fourteen years."
"Yes," he said.
She handed it back.
She went to the window.
He went to Mira’s door.
===
Two knocks.
She was already there — she had heard his footsteps through the Sound Mapping and knew the difference between normal and something-has-happened.
He held out the phone.
She took it.
Held it close to the RF-7.
The unit processed it.
She handed it back.
She held the board.
She wrote.
She held it up.
Renmei started six years ago, it said. The Foundation was already running when they joined.
"Yes," he said.
She set the board face-down.
She came out.
====
The table.
All three of them.
Phone face-up in the center.
Outside: the medical district doing its ordinary morning things. Clinic supply vehicle. Physiotherapy centre opening. The street vendor extending the heat pack cart to the clinic entrance.
Ordinary.
Shira looked at the window.
She said: "The classification board."
"Emergency session," he said. "Denko said within twenty-four hours."
"The active signature."
"Han Dori is watching."
She looked at the window.
She said: "He needs to move first."
Kai picked up his phone.
He called Han Dori.
Han Dori answered first ring.
"I’m already moving," he said.
He hung up.
Eight-oh-three.
The Chronicle ran it.
Six hundred words. Factual. Same language as the bulletin.
’Fast,’ Kai thought. ’They were watching the feeds.’
Eight-forty: civilian outlet.
Nine-fifteen: three more.
Shira had not moved from the window.
’She’s been standing there since seven-fifteen,’ he thought. ’Watching the district do its ordinary things while the extraordinary one spreads.’
Mira came out at nine-thirty.
Board. RF-7 case. Cane. Nine steps to her chair — unassisted.
She sat.
Board face-up immediately.
Seven pieces, it said.
"Yes," he said.
The assessment board quarterly ran one.
"Yes."
She held the board.
She wrote: weeks of preparation. they knew it was coming.
"Han Dori," Kai said.
She held the board.
She set it face-down.
She looked at the wall near the window.
She said: "Someone wanted it in print."
"The same day it dropped," Kai said.
She looked at the wall.
"Good," she said.
===
Ten-twenty.
Denko called.
"Four journalists," he said. "Declined all four."
"The board session," Kai said.
"Three o’clock. Twelve members."
"Han Dori."
"Moved at eight-fifty," Denko said. "The active signature — administrative suspension. Escorted from the building at nine-fifteen."
’Before the session,’ Kai thought. ’Han Dori’s timing.’
"Kai," Denko said.
"Yes."
"By noon this is national," Denko said. "Both names are in the bulletin. The press will find the building."
Kai looked at the window.
Two camera units already at the entrance below.
"How long," he said.
"Forty-eight hours minimum," Denko said.
Kai looked at the window.
He looked at Shira.
He looked at Mira.
’The Sound Mapping,’ he thought. ’She’ll hear them in the entrance from the third floor. Every camera. Every journalist. The Pressure Sense will catch the crowd frequency through the stairwell.’
He thought of somewhere.
"I’ll move them," he said.
"Where," Denko said.
"Somewhere quiet," he said.
"Call when you’re settled."
He hung up.
====
He went to Shira first.
She was at the window.
He stood beside her.
Below: two camera units. A journalist talking to the building manager. The manager saying nothing in the tone of someone fulfilling that instruction with visible satisfaction.
’Fast,’ he thought again.
Shira said: "How long."
"Forty-eight hours," he said.
She looked at the units.
"Mira will hear them," she said.
"From this floor," he said. "Yes."
She looked at the units.
She said: "Where."
"Carson Webb," he said. "Northern district. He offered two months ago — no press address, quiet building."
She looked at the units.
"When," she said.
"Now."
One beat.
"Twenty minutes," she said.
She went to pack.
===
He knocked on Mira’s door.
She opened it.
He told her.
She held the board.
the Sound Mapping will catch them in the entrance, it said.
"Yes," he said.
from this floor.
"Yes."
She held the board.
She looked at the wall near his shoulder.
She said: "Carson."
"Yes."
"Northern district."
"Yes."
She looked at the wall.
She said: "Tuesday."
He looked at her.
"It’s Wednesday," he said.
She looked at the wall.
She said: "He missed Tuesday."
"Yes," he said.
She set the board down.
She picked up the RF-7 case.
She went to pack.
====
Ten-fifty-three.
The entrance.
Camera unit across from the door. Second one at the corner. Journalist with a recorder moving toward them.
’Here we go,’ he thought.
The journalist said: "Shira Voss—"
Shira looked at her.
Not the armor expression. Not the underneath one.
The third one — the committee room expression. Level. Precise.
I have given testimony to a criminal prosecution committee, the expression said. I am going to the cab.
She went to the cab.
The journalist turned to Mira.
Mira was looking at the wall above the journalist’s shoulder. Sound Mapping running. She walked — nine steps, unassisted — and got in.
The journalist said: "Can you—"
"Denko’s office," Kai said. "All press inquiries."
He got in.
Door closed.
’Good building manager,’ he thought.
===
The cab moved north.
The medical district giving way to the transit junction. The northern commercial block. Quieter buildings. More space between them.
Shira at the window.
Mira with the board face-down.
Kai looked at the route.
At the first junction Mira’s board appeared.
he missed Tuesday, it said.
"He’ll be at the board session," Kai said.
and miss Tuesday.
"Yes."
She set the board face-down.
She produced a biscuit from somewhere.
She ate it.
Kai looked at the biscuit.
’Where,’ he thought.
He looked at the front of the cab.
He looked at Shira.
Shira was looking at the window with the expression of someone who knew exactly where the biscuit had come from and was not going to say.
He looked at the ceiling of the cab.
He said nothing.
Mira ate the biscuit.
Deeply.
Profoundly.
Unbothered.
====
Carson’s apartment. Fourth floor. Northern district.
No press address. View of an empty park — renovation fencing, dead January grass, complete quiet.
Carson’s message with the key: top shelf has tea. second shelf has the blue label. take what you need. I’ll be at the board session.
Kai read it.
He read it again.
’He keeps the same tea,’ he thought.
He looked at Shira.
She had read it over his shoulder.
She said: "He kept the same tea."
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked at the message.
The corner of her mouth.
She went to see the apartment.
==
Mira stood in the doorway.
Sound Mapping running — he watched her head orientation shift. Reading the room’s frequency geography. Different from theirs. Higher ceiling. Wood floor. Different echo quality.
Her board appeared.
better acoustics, it said.
"Than ours," Kai said.
yes.
She went to find a chair.
’She’s already cataloguing it,’ he thought. ’Every surface. Every frequency. The whole apartment in the first thirty seconds.’
===
Noon.
The news cycle was what Denko had said it would be.
Eleven pieces. The hero association journal ran a second — deeper, with the expedition roster, both names, the forty-one minutes, the canyon node, the full timeline.
The Foundation’s legal team issued a counter-statement at twelve-forty.
Mira read it through the RF-7.
She came out with the board.
a data discrepancy, it said.
"Yes," Kai said.
fourteen years. they’re calling it a data discrepancy.
"Yes."
She held the board.
’She’s angry,’ he thought. ’The board is flat but she’s angry.’
that’s smart, she wrote. not true. but smart. shift the language before the board session sets it.
"Can they," Shira said from the window.
Mira wrote: not if the board adopts the bulletin language.
"Carson," Kai said.
yes, the board said. someone needs to be in that session.
He picked up the phone.
He called Carson.
First ring.
"I read it," Carson said.
"The language," Kai said.
"I know," Carson said.
"Make sure—"
"I was already planning to," Carson said.
He hung up.
====
Two-thirty.
Shira came away from the window.
She sat at the table.
She looked at it.
She said: "Fourteen years."
"Yes," Kai said.
"The canyon was three years ago."
"Yes."
"Renmei joined something already running," she said.
"Yes."
She looked at the table.
She said: "The source node is further back than any of it."
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the table.
"The Foundation didn’t create it," she said. "They found it. And then they spent thirty-one years keeping everyone else from finding it."
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the table.
"When we find it—"
"We find the beginning," he said.
She looked at the table.
Mira’s board appeared.
the beginning of what, it said.
Shira looked at the board.
She said: "Whatever they were actually doing."
we don’t know yet, the board said.
"No," Shira said. "We don’t."
She looked at the table.
She said: "Today is a good day."
Simply. Factually.
The way she reported form results.
"Yes," Kai said.
Mira’s board appeared.
Carson is going to be insufferable about the session.
Shira looked at the board.
"He has a notebook," she said.
what does he write.
"I don’t know," Shira said. "He covers it when he notices me looking."
board frequency patterns, Mira wrote.
Shira said: "What."
he said. research.
"Into what."
board frequency patterns.
Shira looked at the board.
She looked at the window.
She said: "There are no patterns."
that’s what I said, the board said. he wrote it down.
Shira looked at the board.
’He wrote down that there are no patterns,’ Kai thought. ’Of course he did.’
He looked at his tea.
He said nothing.
=====
Five-forty-three.
Carson’s message.
systemic classification interference. twelve members. unanimous. it’s in the record.
Kai showed both wives.
Shira read it.
She said: "Unanimous."
"Yes," Kai said.
She looked at the empty park.
She said: "Good."
Complete. Decided. Nothing further required.
Mira’s board appeared.
insufferable, it said.
"He earned it," Kai said.
yes, the board said. still insufferable.
She set it face-down.
She ate a biscuit.
Kai looked at the biscuit.
He looked at the ceiling.
He said: "Where are you getting those."
Mira looked at the wall near the window.
Shira said, to the empty park: "Carson’s kitchen. Top shelf."
"The top shelf," Kai said.
"She mapped it when we arrived," Shira said.
He looked at Mira.
She was eating the biscuit.
Looking at the wall.
Deeply unbothered.
there were eight, the board appeared. four remain. fifty percent retention.
"We’re replacing them," Kai said.
I know the shop, the board said.
"How."
I mapped three shops in the northern district on the cab ride.
"Through the Sound Mapping."
yes.
"From inside the cab."
yes.
He looked at the ceiling.
He looked at the empty park.
He said: "Of course you did."
Shira said, to the park: "She also found the good acoustics in the second room."
better than ours, the board said.
"For the album," Kai said.
She held the board.
She set it face-down.
She looked at the wall near the window.
She said: "Joel said to record the real one."
"Yes," he said.
She looked at the wall.
She said: "This room."
He looked at her.
"I want to come back," she said. "With the RF-7."
"I’ll ask Carson," he said.
She looked at the wall.
She said: "Thank you."
Out loud. Spontaneous.
He looked at her.
She looked at the wall.
Shira said, without turning: "He’ll say yes."
"He will," Kai said.
Shira said: "He kept the same tea."
The three of them sat with that.
The empty park outside.
January last light through the renovation fencing.
Then Mira’s board appeared one more time.
It said: he also kept the same biscuits.
"Mira."
four remain, the board said. I counted.
"We know you counted."
statistically significant retention.
"That’s not what that—"
fifty percent, the board said.
He looked at the board.
He looked at the ceiling.
He looked at the empty park.
He drank his tea.
