Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Shadows in the Spire

The elevator shot upward, the digital floor indicator climbing rapidly toward the fortieth floor. The cabin was bathed in the harsh, pulsing red light of the emergency holographic alert.

Evelyn stood in front of the doors. She didn’t look panicked; she looked absolutely furious.

She reached for her wrist. The glowing tattoo flared, and the Bloodhound’s Fang materialized in her grip. The pristine silver blade hummed with violent, tightly controlled kinetic energy.

"How?" Evelyn demanded, her eyes locked on the elevator doors. "You said the Aegis Ward was absolute. You said it stops hostile intent."

"It stops physical force and standard elemental magic," Donald replied calmly. He stood behind her, unzipping his dark jacket halfway to free up his left arm. "Dark mana operates on a different frequency. It doesn’t break the door down; it slides under the crack. Whoever this is, they didn’t brute-force the ward. They picked the lock."

"Julian Vane," Evelyn guessed, her grip tightening on the hilt of her sword.

"No. Vane is an Enchanter. He’s an aristocrat," Donald said, watching the floor numbers tick up. 37... 38... 39... "He wouldn’t get his white suit dirty. He sent a professional."

Ding.

The elevator doors slid open on the fortieth floor.

The hallway leading to the Guild Master’s office was completely gone. It was swallowed by a thick, suffocating cloud of pitch-black fog. The ambient holy mana that Donald had pumped into the building was being violently suppressed by the localized dark magic. The temperature in the corridor was freezing.

Evelyn didn’t hesitate. She stepped out of the elevator.

Her S-Rank aura erupted. The celestial, sapphire-and-gold fire washed over the hallway, burning away the black fog in a ten-foot radius around her.

"Show yourself!" Evelyn’s voice boomed, amplified by her [Divine Pulse]. The kinetic pressure rattled the walls.

From the ceiling, a single drop of liquid darkness fell toward Evelyn’s shoulder.

Evelyn’s reflexes were instantaneous. She spun, swinging her silver blade upward in a blinding arc of holy fire to intercept the attack.

But it was a feint.

The moment Evelyn swung, the shadows on the floor behind her twisted.

A figure formed out of the dark mana, bypassing Evelyn entirely. The assassin didn’t engage the Valkyrie. She slipped past her in a literal blur of darkness, launching herself straight into the Guild Master’s office where Donald was standing.

"Donald!" Evelyn shouted, turning back.

She lunged for the door, but the assassin threw a handful of glowing black crystals onto the threshold.

[Curtain of Night]

A solid, impenetrable wall of hardened dark mana slammed down over the doorway. Evelyn crashed into it, her S-Rank strength violently shaking the barrier, but it didn’t shatter. The dark magic was impossibly dense, designed specifically to isolate and trap.

Inside the office, the heavy oak doors clicked shut.

Donald was completely alone in the dark. The floor-to-ceiling windows were coated in the same black fog, blocking out the morning sun entirely.

He didn’t panic. He slowly raised his hands, resting them casually in his jacket pockets. His golden [Valuation Eye] flared to life in the darkness, the UI cutting through the pitch-black room.

Ten feet away, the shadows condensed into a woman.

[Target: Sylvia]

[Class: A-Rank Dark Mage / Expert Assassin]

[Level: 58]

She wore a sleek, form-fitting tactical suit woven from dark, light-absorbing mesh. A black half-mask covered the lower half of her face, leaving only her striking, cold violet eyes visible. In each hand, she held a curved, wicked-looking dagger dripping with corrosive dark mana.

She didn’t posture. She didn’t monologue. She assessed him with the cold, calculating gaze of a predator looking at a trapped rabbit.

"You don’t look like a Guild Master," Sylvia said. Her voice was muffled slightly by the mask, but it was smooth and dead calm.

"I’m the Guild’s Investor," Donald said. "You’re trespassing."

"Dragonheart sends its regards," Sylvia replied, taking a slow, perfectly balanced step forward. "Nothing personal. You’re just the wallet keeping the Valkyrie fed. The Capital wants your accounts frozen. Permanently."

Outside the office, the entire wall shook violently. A massive, deafening CRACK echoed through the room as Evelyn slammed her sword into the dark barrier. Spiderwebs of holy light began to fracture the black magic.

Sylvia glanced at the door. "Ten seconds until she breaks through. I only need two."

"You’re an A-Rank Dark Mage," Donald noted, his voice completely level. "A prime assassin. Why is an independent contractor taking suicide missions for Julian Vane? If you kill me, Evelyn will hunt you to the ends of the earth. You know that."

Sylvia’s violet eyes narrowed. For a fraction of a second, Donald’s [Valuation Eye] caught a micro-expression of deep, suppressed bitterness in her gaze.

"Because... I don’t have a choice," Sylvia whispered.

She vanished.

It wasn’t a fast run. It was a [Dark Slip]. She dissolved into the shadows on the floor and materialized instantly in the air directly in front of Donald.

Her right arm whipped forward in a lethal, blindingly fast arc, aiming the corrosive dagger straight for his throat.

It was a flawless, textbook execution strike. Against the Level 1 Investor that had walked into Genesis City a month ago, it would have decapitated him before his brain even registered the movement.

But Donald wasn’t Level 1 anymore.

He was Level 16. He had 66 points in Speed, 66 in Strength, and a heightened Perception. He couldn’t outrun an A-Rank assassin, but his eyes could absolutely track her.

Donald didn’t try to dodge. He triggered [Bull Rush], pouring mana into his legs to violently shift his center of gravity forward, stepping into her guard.

He ripped his left hand out of his jacket pocket and raised his forearm.

CLANG.

Sparks violently illuminated the dark office.

Sylvia’s eyes went wide with pure shock.

Her dagger hadn’t sliced through flesh. It had slammed into the heavy, matte-black titanium plating of the Thunderclap Pile Bunker strapped to Donald’s forearm. The B-Rank metal held firm, absorbing the dark mana without buckling.

Donald stood inches away from her, the golden glow of his mask illuminating her stunned face.

"You missed," Donald whispered.

He twisted his left arm, trapping her dagger against the titanium housing, and drove his right fist forward in a brutal, tight uppercut aimed straight at her ribs.

Sylvia’s instincts saved her. She abandoned the trapped dagger, twisting her body mid-air to take the blow on her reinforced shoulder pad instead of her ribs.

The kinetic force of Donald’s 66 Strength hit her like a sledgehammer.

Sylvia was thrown backward, skidding across the hardwood floor and crashing into the side of the mahogany desk. She rolled to her feet instantly, pulling a spare throwing knife from her belt, but her breathing was sharp. She rubbed her bruised shoulder, staring at Donald like he had just sprouted a second head.

"You aren’t a civilian," Sylvia breathed, her violet eyes locked onto the heavy, humming machinery of the Pile Bunker.

"I’m an Investor," Donald corrected, lowering his arm. The blue electrical charge of the Thunder Core hummed loudly in the quiet room. "And I think we need to talk about your contract."

Before Sylvia could answer, the dark barrier covering the office door violently shattered.

Evelyn tore into the room. She was practically radiating celestial fire. The ambient temperature spiked so fast the windows cracked. She saw Sylvia standing near the desk and let out a roar of pure, kinetic fury, launching herself across the room with her sword raised.

Sylvia knew it was over. The hit had failed.

She slammed her hand onto the floor. [Shadow Well].

A vortex of dark mana opened directly beneath Sylvia’s feet. As Evelyn’s silver blade swung down to cleave her in half, Sylvia dropped backward into the liquid shadows.

Evelyn’s sword hit the floor, carving a massive, glowing trench through the hardwood and shattering the concrete subfloor.

But Sylvia was gone. The dark mana evaporated, leaving the office completely empty.

Evelyn spun around, her chest heaving, her blue eyes scanning the room frantically. She looked at Donald.

Donald was standing perfectly still, holding Sylvia’s abandoned dagger in his right hand. He was completely unharmed.

Evelyn let out a breath that sounded like a sob. She dismissed her sword and crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Donald by the shoulders and checking him for blood.

"Did she hit you?" Evelyn demanded, her hands running rapidly over his jacket. "Are you hurt?"

"I’m fine, Evie. I blocked it," Donald said gently, holding up his left arm to show the deep scratch in the Pile Bunker’s titanium plating.

Evelyn stared at the metal, then pulled him into a crushing, desperate hug. She buried her face in his chest, her S-Rank aura finally flickering and fading away as the adrenaline crashed.

"They got inside," Evelyn whispered, her voice shaking with raw anger. "Dragonheart sent an A-Rank into our home."

Donald wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on the top of her head. He looked over her shoulder at the spot where Sylvia had vanished.

His [Valuation Eye] was still processing the deeper data it had pulled during their brief clash. The golden text scrolled silently across his vision.

[Target Profile Updated: Sylvia]

[Affiliation: Former Crimson Lotus Operative. Current Dragonheart Asset.]

[Status: Coerced.]

[Primary Leverage: Subject’s younger brother held hostage by Dragonheart Emissary Julian Vane.]

Donald’s eyes narrowed in the dark.

Dragonheart hadn’t just sent an assassin. They had sent him his next investment.
