Chapter 59: Chapter 59: Martyr

The underground holding cell beneath the Iron Guild headquarters smelled disgusting.

Sterling stood on the other side of the reinforced glass, watching Kaelen pace like a trapped animal. The Level 42 Berserker was a mess. He was sweating through his shirt, muttering to himself, his heavy boots scuffing the concrete floor. The sheer psychological weight of watching a demigod casually shatter an arena wall had completely broken his nerve.

Damian stood quietly beside Sterling in the observation room. The secretary held a small, lead-lined lockbox in his hands.

"The board members are calling for a vote of no confidence at midnight," Damian reported quietly. "Thorne Financial finalized the acquisition of our remaining corporate bonds an hour ago. The boy wasn’t bluffing. If we lose the finals tomorrow, we default. He will legally own this building."

Sterling didn’t blink. His gray eyes were locked on Kaelen.

His empire was completely crumbling. The political favors, the fear, the carefully crafted public image—it was all turning to ash. And the massive idiot pacing in the cell was his only remaining chip on the board.

"He can’t win," Sterling said, his voice completely void of emotion. "An A-Rank core cannot bridge the gap to an S-Rank. The math doesn’t work. Evelyn will take his head off in the first exchange."

"Unless the math changes," Damian murmured. He unlatched the heavy lead box.

Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was a glass vial. It was filled with a thick, violently bubbling crimson liquid. It didn’t look like blood; it looked like liquid hate.

"The forensic sweep at the warehouse district yielded results before the police shut it down," Damian explained. "When the boy incinerated Lord Valerius, the Vampire’s core was destroyed. But high-tier vampires leave residue. We scraped the ash, refined it, and condensed the remaining mana. It is a highly corrupted, concentrated blood-relic."

Sterling picked up the vial. The glass was freezing cold to the touch.

"What does it do?" Sterling asked.

"It is pure, unfiltered vampiric corruption," Damian said flatly. "If Kaelen drinks it, the relic will violently forcibly mutate his core. It will temporarily push his output into the S-Rank tier. His strength and regeneration will skyrocket to match a Valkyrie."

"The side effects?"

"Total cellular breakdown," Damian answered without hesitation. "It will burn out his lifeforce in less than thirty minutes. The pain will completely shatter his mind. He won’t be a Champion anymore. He will be a rabid, mindless monster."

Sterling stared at the vial. He didn’t feel an ounce of pity. Kaelen was an employee. And employees were expendable.

Sterling pressed the button to open the cell door. He walked into the concrete room, Damian right behind him.

Kaelen stopped pacing. He looked at Sterling, a desperate, frantic light in his eyes.

"Guild Master," Kaelen choked out. "We have to forfeit. You saw what she did to the Copperhead Twins! She didn’t even draw her sword! I’m not fighting her. I’ll die!"

"You aren’t going to forfeit, Kaelen," Sterling said warmly. He held out the vial. "You are going to evolve."

Kaelen stared at the bubbling crimson liquid. He was a brute, but he wasn’t completely stupid. He could feel the sickly, oppressive dark magic rolling off the glass.

"What is that?" Kaelen backed away, shaking his head. "That’s dark magic. That’s syndicate trash. You want me to drink vampire blood?"

"I want you to win," Sterling said, taking a slow step forward. "This will close the gap. It will give you the power to break her."

"It’ll turn me into a ghoul!" Kaelen shouted, his back hitting the concrete wall. "It’ll rot my brain! I won’t do it. Find someone else!"

Sterling’s warm expression vanished.

In a fraction of a second, Sterling crossed the room. His massive hand locked around Kaelen’s throat, slamming the Berserker against the wall so hard the concrete cracked. Kaelen gagged, grabbing at Sterling’s wrist, but the Guild Master’s strength was absolute.

"You don’t have a choice," Sterling whispered, his voice dark and hollow. "You owe this Guild your life. You will walk into that arena tomorrow, and you will tear Evelyn Vance apart. And if you die in the dirt doing it, you will die a martyr for my empire."

Sterling jammed the vial against Kaelen’s teeth. The glass shattered.

The thick, corrupted blood poured down Kaelen’s throat.

Sterling dropped him and stepped back.

Kaelen hit the floor, screaming. It wasn’t a yell of anger; it was a shriek of pure, tearing agony. He clawed at his own throat. His veins instantly turned a sickly, bruised black, bulging against his skin. His muscles violently expanded, tearing the fabric of his shirt to shreds.

The A-Rank aura radiating from his body twisted. It turned from a clean, aggressive red into a suffocating, tar-like black. The pressure in the room skyrocketed, cracking the reinforced glass of the observation window.

Kaelen rolled onto his back, his screams turning into wet, guttural snarls. His eyes snapped open. The whites were completely gone, replaced by solid, glowing crimson.

He didn’t look human anymore. He looked like a nightmare.

Sterling stared down at the twitching, drooling monster on his floor.

"Put him in a heavy transport cage," Sterling ordered Damian, turning his back on the mutating Berserker. "Do not feed him until the bell rings tomorrow."

---

The Zenith Spire was quiet.

High above the noisy, anxious streets of Genesis City, the penthouse was a haven of absolute calm. The city lights stretched out for miles through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting softly on the hardwood floor.

Donald sat on the edge of the gray sectional couch, a glass of dark amber whiskey resting loosely in his hand. He was exhausted. The mental strain of keeping the facade perfect, of buying debt, of playing the grand game of chess against Sterling was finally catching up to him.

But it was over. The board was locked.

Evelyn walked out of the kitchen and handed him a glass of water, taking the whiskey from his hand and setting it on the coffee table. She sat down next to him on the couch, pulling her legs up and resting her head against his shoulder.

She was wearing an oversized t-shirt and loose sweatpants. Her blonde hair was damp from the shower. She didn’t look like an S-Rank Valkyrie right now. She just looked comfortable.

"Drink the water," Evelyn murmured softly, tracing a slow circle on his knee with her thumb. "You need to stay hydrated. We have a hostile takeover to finalize tomorrow."

Donald smiled, picking up the water. "Aris texted me an hour ago. The paperwork is filed. If Sterling loses, the Awakener Association will freeze his assets immediately. His debt defaults directly to me. I’ll own the Iron Guild’s headquarters, their training grounds, and their charter by lunchtime."

Evelyn let out a quiet, relaxed breath. She looked out at the glowing city.

"I spent three years letting that man tell me what I was worth," Evelyn said, her voice quiet and grounded in the quiet room. "He threw me in the Obsidian Vault. He took my money. He tried to take my life."

She turned her head, looking up at Donald. Her blue eyes were soft, completely stripped of the fierce, burning intensity she carried in the arena.

"Tomorrow, I take his crown," Evelyn whispered. "And I’m going to drag him through the mud to get it."

"He earned every bit of it," Donald said softly.

He reached out, brushing a damp strand of hair away from her face. His fingers lingered on her cheek. The skin was warm, thrumming with the quiet, settled rhythm of her new core.

There was no frantic desperation tonight. No wild, explosive clash of mana like the morning she evolved. They didn’t need to prove anything to each other, and they didn’t need to hide.

Evelyn leaned into his touch. She shifted her weight, straddling his lap slowly, settling heavily against him. Sweatpants and an oversized shirt, damp hair, the quiet of the penthouse. She wrapped her arms around his neck and buried her face in the crook of his shoulder.

Donald ran his hands down her back and pulled her flush against his chest. He closed his eyes and breathed her in. Soap, and under it the faint ozone of her aura.

The kiss was slow. Deep, heavy, deliberately unhurried. Her mouth opened under his. She rolled her hips once, testing, and felt him harden under the thin fabric between them.

Evelyn pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it on the floor. Her palms dragged down his chest, then lower. She worked his belt open without breaking the kiss, shoved his pants down just far enough, and wrapped her hand around his dick. He was already thick in her grip, hot, twitching when she stroked him once from base to tip.

"Evie," he said, low.

"I know." She sat back on his thighs, pulled the oversized shirt off, and dropped it beside his. No bra. Her breasts were bare in the city light, nipples tight from the cool air and from him looking. She hooked her thumbs in the sweatpants and pushed them down with her underwear, kicking both off the couch. Then she settled back over him, naked, her pussy already wet where it rested against the length of his dick.

She didn’t rush it. She rocked, sliding her folds along him, smearing him with how wet she was, until the head caught at her entrance. Donald’s hands found her ass and held her there. She sank down inch by inch, taking his dick until she was seated fully in his lap, breath shaking against his mouth.

For a moment neither of them moved. She was tight and hot around him, walls fluttering as she adjusted. Evelyn rested her forehead on his and rolled her hips in a slow circle, grinding her clit against him every time she bottomed out.

"Stay like this," she murmured.

He did. His hands stayed on her ass, spreading her a little, guiding the rhythm instead of taking it. She rode him lazy and deep, breasts pressed to his chest, then leaning back so he could get his mouth on them. He sucked one nipple, then the other, tongue slow, while she kept that same unhurried pace. Every drop of her hips took him to the base. The wet sound of her pussy on his dick was quiet under their breathing.

Donald slid a hand between them and found her clit with his thumb. Evelyn’s rhythm broke. She clenched around him, a soft curse against his shoulder, and started moving harder without meaning to. Still not frantic. Just need, finally allowed to be need.

He tipped her back onto the cushions and followed her down, still inside her. Her legs wrapped his waist. He fucked her in long, heavy strokes, watching her breasts shift with each one, watching her mouth fall open when he ground deep and stayed there. Her nails dug into his back. Not drawing blood this time. Just holding on.

"Right there," she breathed. "Don’t change it."

He didn’t. Same angle, same pace, thumb back on her clit. Evelyn came with a broken sound, pussy gripping his dick in tight pulses, soaking him. He kept moving through it until the clench dragged him over. He buried himself and came, groaning into her neck, cum pulsing deep inside her while she shook under him.

They stayed like that. His dick still in her, her legs loose around him, cum already leaking where they were joined. City light cut long shadows across the couch. Donald kissed her shoulder. Evelyn’s hand rested in his hair, thumb moving in the same slow circle she’d drawn on his knee.

For the first time since he found her bleeding in that alley, neither of them was looking over a shoulder. They weren’t running.

Tomorrow they were going to war. Tonight they were exactly where they belonged.
