Investing In Crippled Heroine and Villainess Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 50: The Tri-Balance
The main lecture hall of Wing 1 was built like an ancient stone theater.
Row after row of curved oak benches rose in high steps toward the vaulted ceiling.
Dust motes danced in the pale morning light streaming through high arched windows.
By nine bell, all fifty cadets of Class A sat in their assigned seats.
The room was split down the middle.
On the left side sat the noble cadets wearing Silver Knight badges, surrounding Cedric Vale.
On the right side sat the commoner cadets wearing Iron badges, including Rook.
Seraphina, Isolde, and I sat together on the top row of the central aisle.
Seraphina sat between us.
Her spine was straight, her golden hair braided neatly over her left shoulder.
Isolde sat on my left, her chin resting casually on her palm as she watched the noble cadets murmur below.
Professor Aldyn walked to the center stone lectern.
He carried a heavy black leather tome bound with tarnished iron straps.
He set the heavy book onto the wooden stand with a loud, hollow thud.
"Silence!" Aldyn called out, his voice echoing off the stone walls.
The chatter in the hall died down instantly.
"Today’s schedule has been adjusted," Aldyn announced, unlatching the iron straps of the tome. "The Directorate has instructed me to deliver the Bloodline History lecture three weeks early."
Cedric Vale sat up straighter in his front-row bench.
He smirked, glancing back up toward our top row.
’The World’s Will is moving pieces early again.’
’It brought the Bloodline Correction lecture forward.’
’It wants the academy to teach every cadet that Abyssal cores are violent anomalies.’
’It wants to isolate us even more.’
Aldyn picked up a piece of white chalk and tapped it against the large slate board behind him.
"Three thousand years ago," Aldyn began, drawing three distinct circles on the board. "Before the Great Unification, the continent was governed by three primeval forces."
He drew a golden flame inside the top circle.
"The Phoenix Order," Aldyn said. "Divine heat, holy illumination, and supreme structure."
He drew a dark crescent inside the second circle.
"The Draven Shadow," Aldyn continued. "Veil, spatial protection, and shadow arts."
Then he drew a dark, hollow circle at the bottom, linking the flame and the shadow together.
"And the Abyssal Anchor," Aldyn murmured, his voice dropping an octave.
The lecture hall went completely still.
Many cadets leaned forward, staring at the bottom circle on the slate board.
Rook looked back toward us from his bench, his eyes wide in quiet surprise.
"According to the ancient murals recovered from the Third Anchor era," Aldyn explained, pointing his chalk at the linked diagram. "These three forces were never enemies. They formed the original Tri-Balance of the world."
Cedric Vale frowned in his seat.
"Professor!" Cedric called out, raising his hand without waiting for permission. "The modern Church scriptures state that Abyssal power is a demonic corruption! It threatens reality!"
Aldyn looked at Cedric over his spectacles with a dry, unbothered stare.
"Church scriptures reflect modern royal edicts, Cadet Vale," Aldyn said calmly. "I am teaching ancient history. The murals in Wing 1 archives show that the Abyssal core acted as a harmonizing Crucible."
Aldyn tapped the center point where the three circles overlapped.
"Phoenix magic produces intense divine heat," Aldyn explained, looking up toward Seraphina. "Without a counter-weight, Phoenix heat burns the caster’s own vitality from within."
Seraphina’s fingers twitched slightly against her skirt.
She touched her right thigh through the fabric, remembering the terrible heavy weight that used to scorch her legs before our marriage.
"Shadow magic creates extreme spatial cold," Aldyn continued, glancing at Isolde. "Without balance, Draven cold dims the caster’s sight and freezes their lifeforce."
Isolde’s shadow on the stone floor flickered once, darkening as she listened.
"And what does the Abyssal Anchor do?" Aldyn asked the silent room.
"The Abyssal core possesses no element of its own.
It is a void.
It acts like a Crucible Anchor, absorbing the burning heat of the Phoenix and the freezing cold of the Shadow, holding them in perfect harmony so neither power destroys its wielder."
A quiet wave of whispers broke out across the rows of cadets.
"So the Abyssal core isn’t a corruption?" a Class B cadet whispered near the middle row. "It’s the anchor holding the other two together?"
"Look at the diagram," another noble student murmured. "If you remove the bottom circle, the top two circles burn each other out."
Cedric’s face turned pale.
He looked back at us, his eyes wide with sudden realization and bitterness.
’The original story didn’t want a Tri-Balance.’
’The World’s Will wrote the story to force the Heroine and Villainess apart.’
’It wanted Seraphina to burn from Phoenix heat.’
’It wanted Isolde to go blind from Shadow cold.’
’Because as long as they were suffering, the novel’s tragic script stayed on track.’
’My Abyssal core is the one piece that fixes both of them.’
’I am the Crucible Anchor that breaks the Will’s script.’
Aldyn closed the heavy leather tome with a dull, final thud.
Thump.
"Lecture dismissed," Aldyn announced. "Review pages forty through sixty for tomorrow’s written assessment."
The cadets stood up slowly, picking up their leather satchels and books.
We walked down the stone aisle toward the high arched exit of Wing 1.
Cadets moved out of our way, whispering quietly as they watched us pass.
They looked at Seraphina’s steady, unbothered walk.
They looked at Isolde’s sharp, clear eyes.
They looked at my Iron collar badge.
As we stepped into the bright afternoon sunlight of the main courtyard, Seraphina walked close beside me.
Her hand swung lightly at her side.
As we crossed the cobblestones near the central fountain, her fingers brushed against mine.
It was a gentle, deliberate touch.
I turned my head slightly, catching her eye.
Seraphina smiled, her golden eyes shining with a soft, warm light in the sun.
She leaned in close, her voice a quiet whisper meant only for me.
"He called you the Crucible Anchor," Seraphina murmured softly.
"Do you like the title?" I teased, letting my fingers weave through hers for three brief seconds before we reached the crowded gateway.
"I don’t care about the title," Seraphina whispered back, her breath warm against my cheek. "I just care that you’re mine."
Beside us, Isolde let out a soft, amused hum, closing her eyes as the warm sun hit her face.
"He’s ours," Isolde corrected playfully, her shadow stretching beside mine on the cobblestones.
I laughed quietly, sliding my left hand into my coat pocket as we walked back toward the East Annex.
The World’s Will had tried to write a story of destruction.
But we were building something unbroken.
