Xavier opened the business overview. All nine running. Gerald Obi’s logistics company. The Meridian Street property. The food distribution company. The printing company. The manufacturing firm. The commercial cleaning company. The courier company. Nwosu Logistics. Millhaven Print and Design.

Nine businesses, he thought. Running while I was in a presidential suite in Millhaven eating room service and walking through someone else’s history.

Infrastructure, he thought. Built correctly.

He closed the overview.

Started cycling the Sunday donations. Tier 3 cap at $2,000,000 — the first full Sunday with the new cap and he intended to use it properly.

His phone buzzed.

He glanced at it between transactions.

Then stopped.

Amira, he thought.

Not one message. Several. And missed calls. Three of them, spread across Friday and Saturday and one Sunday morning at 8AM Millhaven time when he’d been in the presidential suite watching the city come up through the floor to ceiling windows.

He opened the messages.

Amira: Xavier where are you. You weren’t in the exam hall.

Amira: I know you said someone was handling it but they weren’t there either. The invigilator asked for you by name.

Amira: Xavier answer your phone.

Amira: okay I spoke to the department administrator. They said your attendance record shows 61% which means you qualified to sit. But you weren’t there. This is going to be flagged.

Amira: Xavier I swear if you’re somewhere being Xavier right now I am going to be very annoyed with you.

Amira: it’s Saturday morning. Still no answer. Campus Admin sent a formal notification to your student email about the missed examination. You have 48 hours to respond before it escalates to the faculty board.

Amira: Xavier.

Xavier read through all of them.

The exam, he thought. The person Campus Admin sourced to sit it. He scrolled back to the Friday morning messages. They weren’t there.

Somebody didn’t show up, he thought.

On the one day it actually mattered.

He called Campus Admin immediately.

The contact answered on the third ring.

"Mr. Cole," the voice said. The particular careful tone of someone who knew something had gone wrong and was deciding how to present it.

"The exam," Xavier said. "What happened."

A pause.

"The individual I sourced had a personal emergency Friday morning," the contact said. "I tried to reach you but..."

"You didn’t reach me," Xavier said.

"No sir," the contact said.

Xavier was quiet for exactly three seconds.

The exam is missed, he thought. Faculty board notification in 48 hours. Amira has been sending messages since Friday. He looked at the notification on his student email that had arrived while he was in Millhaven eating wagyu beef with Selene.

Fine, he thought. Fixable.

"Find me the faculty board’s resolution process," he said. "Medical grounds or exceptional circumstances. I want the paperwork on my desk tonight."

"I’ll... yes," the contact said. "Tonight."

"And find someone for the resit," Xavier said. "When it’s scheduled. This time confirm forty eight hours in advance."

"Understood," the contact said.

Xavier hung up.

Opened Amira’s chat.

Xavier: I know. It’s being handled. Don’t worry about it.

The three dots appeared almost immediately.

Amira: Xavier it is literally already worrying me. Where have you been since Friday.

Xavier: away. I’m back now.

Amira: away.

Xavier: yes.

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: Amira.

Amira: the faculty board notification said you have 48 hours. That’s tomorrow evening.

Xavier: I know. It’s being handled tonight.

Amira: how

Xavier: exceptional circumstances paperwork. Campus Admin is sourcing it now.

A brief moment.

Amira: you’re going to forge exceptional circumstances paperwork.

Xavier: I’m going to file exceptional circumstances paperwork.

Amira: Xavier that’s the same thing

Xavier: it really isn’t

Amira: ?? you were somewhere weren’t you. Doing something Xavier-shaped.

Xavier: yes

Amira: are you okay

Are you okay, he thought. Same question. Every time. Direct. No performance.

Xavier: yes sweetheart. I’m okay.

Amira: don’t call me that when you’ve just told me you missed your end of semester exam and are apparently fine about it.

Xavier: I’m handling it.

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: Amira. It’s handled. I’ll see you Wednesday.

A longer moment this time.

Amira: Wednesday. And you’re going to tell me where you were.

Xavier: some of it.

Amira: ???? fine. Wednesday. Some of it.

Xavier: goodnight sweetheart.

Amira: it’s 1PM Xavier.

Xavier: good afternoon sweetheart.

Amira: ?????? go handle your exceptional circumstances paperwork.

He put the phone down.

The exam, he thought. Campus Admin sourcing exceptional circumstances documentation tonight. Resit scheduled when it comes through. Faculty board notification responded to before tomorrow evening.

Manageable, he thought. Everything is manageable.

He opened his banking app and continued the Sunday donation cycle.

Base Multiplier (Tier 2): 2x

Total Return: $1,400,000

[ Net Balance: $19,377,383.00 → $20,077,383.00 ]

$20,077,383, he noted. Sunday cycle running. Exam situation being handled. Amira informed.

He looked at the room.

Tuesday, he thought. Apex Fitness. Jade. First official training session.

Wednesday, he thought. Campus. Amira. Some of it.

Thursday, he thought. Her restaurant. Selene.

And Tuesday and Wednesday, he thought. Asset Rebound from both Millhaven acquisitions landing. $1,650,000 from Nwosu. $1,260,000 from the printing company. $2,910,000 incoming.

Everything moving, he thought.

Right on schedule.

He ate Mama Elizabeth’s food at the desk. Proper food. The kind she always made without apology.

Presidential suite room service Saturday night, he thought between bites. Mama Elizabeth’s container Sunday afternoon.

Both good, he thought. In completely different ways.

He finished eating. Opened his laptop. Pulled up the faculty board exceptional circumstances process that Campus Admin had already sent through. Faster than expected, which told you that the $8,000 he’d paid at the start of semester had purchased more than just attendance record adjustments.

Manageable, he thought again.

Always manageable.

$20,077,383, he noted. Clean Sunday. Base.

He leaned back in the chair and looked at the city through the window.

Twenty million, he thought. Nine businesses. Three bindings — Amira at Maximum Bond, Selene at Standard, Sarah terminated. Two Millhaven acquisitions processing. Tier 3 active. Passive returns running. Jade on Tuesday. Amira on Wednesday. Selene on Thursday.

And the exam situation, he thought. Getting handled tonight.

Different life, he thought.

Very different everything.
