Xavier woke up Thursday at 7AM.

Today was going to be a busy day. He’d gone to sleep knowing it and woke up knowing it the same way you woke up knowing a flight was catching. Not anxious, just aware.

He checked the system first.

$15,258,003, he noted. A Clean start.

He got up. Showered. Dressed in dark trousers and a clean shirt. Mr. Hartley’s appointment first, he didn’t need to suit up for measurements. The irony of going to a tailor without a suit on was not lost on him.

Mama Elizabeth was at her door when he came down the stairs.

She looked at him. Looked at the time. Looked back at him with the expression of someone noting that he was leaving earlier than usual for a Thursday.

"Morning ma," he said.

"Morning," she said. She already had the container ready. He didn’t know how she always knew and had stopped trying to figure it out. "Eat before you go."

"I’ll eat in the car," he said.

She handed it over with the look that communicated everything she thought about eating in cars.

He took it and headed out.

He ate Mama Elizabeth’s food at a fuel station two blocks from the hostel. Filled the tank. Pulled out into the Thursday morning city.

Hartley & Sons was on Meridian Street. The same street as the commercial property he’d acquired two months ago. He pulled up outside at 9:47AM. Found a space. Locked the Panamera.

Mr. Hartley was already at the door when Xavier came up the steps. The old tailor looked at him the way he always looked at him. Assessing the frame before acknowledging the person.

"Mr. Cole," he said.

"Mr. Hartley," Xavier replied.

They went inside.

The shop was the same as the first visit. Dark wood, precise lighting, the particular atmosphere of a space that had decided what it was a long time ago and had no intention of reconsidering.. Mr. Hartley’s assistant — a young man Xavier hadn’t seen before. Had four fabric swatches laid out on the measuring table already. The same ones from the phone photos. The windowpane charcoal. The midnight blue. The warm grey. The black.

In person they were different from the screen version in the way that expensive things were always different from their photographs.

Better, Xavier thought. Significantly better.

Mr. Hartley updated the measurements efficiently. Xavier had been to the gym twice now. Tuesday and this morning before the appointment and the baseline was shifting in ways that were small but present. Mr. Hartley noted the adjustments without comment, the way someone noted a fact that required incorporation rather than discussion.

"The suits will be ready in three weeks," Mr. Hartley said when he was finished.

"Three weeks," Xavier confirmed.

"The black first," Mr. Hartley said. "Followed by the midnight blue. Then the others." He folded his measuring tape with the precision of someone who had been folding it the same way for thirty years. "The fabric arrived from the mill this morning. Good material. You’ll notice the difference immediately."

"I trust your judgment," Xavier said.

Mr. Hartley nodded once. The nod of someone who had heard that said by many people and had learned to tell the ones who meant it from the ones who were being polite.

He settled the remaining deposit at the desk.

$15,546,088, he noted. Four suits paid in full.

He shook Mr. Hartley’s hand at the door. The old tailor’s grip was firm and brief. The handshake of someone who considered the transaction complete and had the next thing to attend to.

Xavier walked back to the Panamera.

10:30AM, he noted. First thing done.

He drove back toward the hostel. Cycled donations from the car.

Back at the hostel at 11:15AM. He had until 3PM.

He sat at the desk. Opened the MacBook. Checked Vincent’s emails. Nothing urgent, the businesses running quietly, Patricia handling the ownership transfer administration without requiring his direct involvement.

Everything was running smoothly , he thought. Without me watching it constantly.

That’s what infrastructure feels like, he thought. When it’s built correctly it doesn’t need you every minute.

$15,846,088, he noted. Past fifteen and a half million.

He looked at the Millhaven tickets on the shelf.

Tonight, he thought. Selene’s restaurant. I’ll ask her.

And if she says yes, tomorrow it is.

His phone buzzed at 12:30PM.

Jade.

Jade: still on for 3? 😊

Xavier: sure. I’ll send the address now.

He sent the hostel address.

Jade: 😊 see you soon

He put the phone down.

Looked around the apartment. Desk clean. MacBook closed. The suits on order. The tickets on the shelf. The city through the window doing its Thursday afternoon thing.

2PM, he thought. One hour.

He stood up. Straightened the room. Not performing tidiness, just the natural order of someone who preferred their space to reflect a certain standard. Moved the Millhaven tickets from the shelf to the desk drawer where they’d be out of sight. Not hidden. Just not the first thing someone noticed when they walked in.

Context matters, he thought.

One thing at a time, he thought.

Then 3PM clicked.

The knock came at 3:02PM.

He opened the door.

Jade was standing in the corridor.

Different from the gym version. No leggings, no performance top. This time, she wore a fitted caramel-colored dress that hugged her figure before stopping just above the knee, its simple design somehow making her look even more distracting. The fabric followed every curve without needing to try too hard, and the outline of her nipples was subtly visible beneath it, adding an effortless edge to the otherwise elegant look.

Her hair was down, falling freely around her shoulders. Her brown eyes were doing their usual work. Slow, confident, and impossible to ignore. A small bag rested over one shoulder, completing the picture of someone who looked perfectly composed while knowing exactly how much attention she was drawing.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

Different environment, he thought. Still giving the same energy.

"You actually gave me your address," she said. A slight smile. "I half expected you to cancel."

"I don’t cancel," he said.

She looked at him for a moment with the expression of someone filing that information away.

"Nice apartment," she said. Looking past him at the room.

"It works," he said.

He stepped aside.

She came in.
