Not about Hale & Associates. Not about acquisitions or Vincent or anything with a professional reason attached. Just normal conversation. The kind that found its own direction without being steered.

She asked him about the businesses. Not professionally. Genuinely. What it felt like to own seven companies at eighteen. Xavier thought about it properly before answering which was not something he did with every question.

"Like building something that exists independently of me," he said. "Each one runs whether I’m paying attention or not. There’s something satisfying about that."

She looked at him. "Most people your age want to be the centre of everything."

"I’ve tried that," he said. In a previous life. "It doesn’t work."

She held his gaze for a brief moment. "What does work?"

"Infrastructure," he said. "Build the right things in the right order. Then let them run."

She was quiet for a moment.

"Vincent says you see things differently from how most people see them," she said.

"You mentioned that," he said.

"I’m mentioning it again," she said. "Because I’m starting to understand what he means."

Starting to understand, he thought. From 2% at the lift to starting to understand.

He checked the gauge at a red light.

Selene Adler — 42% → 48%

Six percent, he noted. From one drive.

48%, he thought. Getting close to intermediate.

The light changed. He pulled away.

They drove for another forty minutes without a destination. The city doing its Sunday thing around them. The Panamera quiet. The conversation finding its own pace. Sometimes words, sometimes just the city moving past in comfortable silence.

This, Xavier thought. This is what genuine looks like when it’s building.

Not manufactured. Not bought. Just two people in a car on a Sunday evening saying things that are actually true.

At 10:30PM Xavier turned toward her part of the city.

"I should get back," she said. Not reluctantly. Just noting it.

"Okay," he said.

He pulled up outside her building at 10:47PM. A different address from the office. Residential, clean, the kind of building that suited someone who had been in Kenvale three years and had found a place that worked.

She gathered herself. Picked up her shoes. Opened the door.

Then stopped.

Looked back at him.

"Xavier," she said.

"Selene."

"I called you tonight because I wanted to," she said. Simply. Directly. The way she said things that were actually true. "Not because I had a document or a professional reason." A brief moment. "I just wanted you to know that."

Xavier looked at her.

She said it out loud, he thought. Selene Adler who calls from office lines and attributes things to Vincent and uses site visits as cover. He held her gaze. Said it directly. No cover. No deniability.

"I know," he said. "I’m glad you did."

She held his gaze for one more moment.

Then she got out. Walked toward the entrance. At the door she turned back once. The same look she always gave at the end of an evening. Filing something away.

Then she went inside.

Still 48%, he noted. Same as before she got in the car. He looked at the building entrance she’d disappeared through. The evening moved something. The gauge didn’t register it yet. He tapped the steering wheel once. Which means whatever moved isn’t affection. Not yet.

But she said it out loud, he thought. No cover. No deniability. I called you tonight because I wanted to.

The gauge will catch up, he thought. It always does.

He opened his banking app. Cycled the remaining cap through donations before midnight.

⚠ Daily Cap Reached

[ Net Balance: $9,812,834.00 → $9,972,194.00 ]

$9,972,194, he noted. Cap hit. Clean Sunday.

Nearly ten million, he thought. Tier 3 active. Special package arriving tomorrow. Selene at 48%.

He started the engine.

Tomorrow, he thought. The package arrives.

Let’s see what the system sends this time.

_ _

Xavier woke up Monday morning knowing two things were coming.

The Asset Rebound from the manufacturing company’s second payment. And the special package.

He didn’t know which would arrive first.

He checked the system before getting out of bed.

[ Net Balance: $9,972,194.00 ]

[ Daily Cap: $2,000,000 ]

He looked at that number for a long moment.

$2,000,000 daily cap, he thought. First day of Tier 3.

He looked at it again.

From $10,000 at Tier 1, he thought. To $500,000 at Tier 2. To $2,000,000 now. He set the phone down. The cap isn’t the ceiling anymore. The cap is the floor.

He got up. Showered. Made coffee. Sat at the desk.

His phone buzzed at 8:47AM.

Manufacturing Company — Second Payment

3x Investment Return: $1,425,000

[ Net Balance: $9,972,194.00 → $11,397,194.00 ]

$11,397,194, he thought.

He looked at that number for exactly ten seconds.

Past eleven million, he thought. On a Monday morning before 9AM.

He set the phone face down on the desk.

In my previous life, he thought, eleven million dollars was a number that existed in news articles about other people. He picked up his coffee. Now it’s a balance notification on a Monday morning.

He drank his coffee and looked at the city through the window.

The package, he thought. Still coming.

He spent the morning cycling donations. Tier 3 cap at $2,000,000 meant the morning cycle looked completely different from anything before it. Larger amounts. Faster returns. The balance climbing in a way that made the Tier 2 cycle feel like a practice run.

$12,397,194, he noted. And still $1,000,000 of cap remaining.

This is Tier 3, he thought. This is what the new cap feels like.

He kept the remaining $1,000,000 aside. Investment opportunities incoming. Vincent might surface something. The USB list was exhausted but Vincent’s network wasn’t.

Keep the space, he reminded himself. Always keep the space.

He was at his desk at 11:23AM reading through Mr. Hartley’s catalogue. He’d planned to call Monday morning for new suits, the wardrobe situation needed to be addressed properly. When he heard it.

Not a knock.

A single ping from his doorstep.

The particular sound of something being set down and whoever set it down not waiting to be seen.

Xavier looked up from the MacBook.

The package, he thought.

He stood. Walked to the door. Opened it.

The corridor was empty.

But on the floor directly in front of his door sat a package. Slightly larger than the first one. Same dark wrapping material. Not quite paper, not quite cloth. No postage. No return address. No delivery service markings of any kind.

Just his name.

Xavier Cole.

Same clean precise print as the first time.

He picked it up and went back inside.

He set it on the desk and looked at it for a moment.

The first package contained a USB drive and a card, he thought. An Asset Rebound skill and shii.

What does this one change, he thought.
