INFINITE GROWTH SYSTEM: FROM NOTHING TO ABSOLUTE POWER
Chapter 184 - 183: The World That Remembered Him
Chapter 183: The World That Remembered Him
The creature climbed out of the Heart.
Auren did not move.
Neither did the boy.
For several seconds, the only sound was the enormous pulse beneath them.
Boom.
The world shuddered.
Boom.
The broken city trembled.
Boom.
Across the distant worlds, lights appeared one after another.
The creature lifted its head.
It had Auren’s face.
Not the face he wore now.
An older one.
Harder.
A face that had survived too much and forgiven too little.
Its eyes opened.
They were empty.
Then they smiled.
"You finally stopped running."
Auren’s expression hardened.
"I wasn’t running."
"You always say that."
The creature took another step.
The ground beneath its feet became solid.
Wherever it walked, memories surfaced.
A battlefield.
A throne room.
A grave.
A room with two chairs.
A forest beneath a white moon.
A woman standing beside a tree.
A child looking through a window.
Auren saw pieces of his journey scattered beneath the creature’s feet.
But something was wrong.
The memories were being rearranged.
Events that had never happened were appearing between the ones that had.
Auren watched himself kneel before a throne he had never accepted.
He saw himself kill Ethan.
He saw Edran standing beside him.
He saw his wife lying dead beneath the First Tree.
He saw himself laughing.
Then another version showed him saving her.
Another showed him abandoning her.
Another showed him never meeting her.
Another showed him becoming a god.
Another showed him becoming nothing.
The creature spread its arms.
"All of them are true."
"No."
"They could have been."
"That’s different."
The creature laughed.
"You still believe possibility makes a difference."
"It does."
"Then why are they all remembered?"
Auren’s jaw tightened.
The boy stepped forward.
"Because you’re cheating."
The creature looked at him.
For the first time, its smile disappeared.
"You."
The boy’s face became pale.
Auren noticed.
"You know him?"
The boy didn’t answer.
The creature did.
"He was there before you."
Auren looked at the child.
The boy lowered his eyes.
"He saw what you would become."
Auren waited.
The boy finally spoke.
"I saw possibilities."
"Which ones?"
"All of them."
The creature laughed again.
"And he was afraid."
The boy’s fingers curled.
"I wasn’t afraid of possibilities."
"Then what?"
The boy looked at Auren.
"I was afraid one of them would become you."
Auren stared at him.
The words should have hurt.
Instead, they clarified something.
The creature wasn’t trying to convince him.
It was trying to make him choose.
Every statement created another possibility.
Every possibility demanded an answer.
And every answer could become a world.
Auren looked around.
Thousands of versions of reality had already begun forming around them.
Some bright.
Some ruined.
Some peaceful.
Some violent.
They were all waiting.
Waiting for him.
Auren closed his eyes.
"No."
The creature tilted its head.
"No?"
"I won’t."
"Won’t what?"
"Choose."
The creature’s expression darkened.
The worlds began collapsing toward him.
The pressure was immediate.
Auren dropped to one knee.
The ground cracked beneath him.
The seventh symbol on his chest burned.
He heard voices.
Millions.
Some begged him to save them.
Others cursed him.
Some called his name.
Others called him god.
Some called him monster.
A few simply said:
Stay.
Auren’s fingers dug into the ground.
The creature approached.
"You can’t refuse forever."
"I don’t need forever."
Auren forced himself upright.
"I only need this moment."
The creature struck.
There was no warning.
Auren barely raised his arm.
The impact threw him through three worlds.
He smashed through a stone wall.
Rolled across a battlefield.
Passed through a burning city.
Then landed on a grassy hill beneath a gray sky.
His shoulder screamed.
He pushed himself up.
The creature was already there.
Auren barely saw the fist.
He blocked.
The shockwave tore the hill apart.
Auren flew backward.
He caught himself in midair.
His feet touched nothing.
The world beneath him stretched.
He could see the Heart.
It was enormous now.
Every world was connected to it.
Every choice fed it.
And the creature was attached to its center.
Auren understood.
"You aren’t trying to destroy the worlds."
The creature smiled.
"No."
"You’re trying to make them depend on me."
Silence.
That was the answer.
Auren’s eyes narrowed.
"If every world believes I have to choose for them, then eventually I will."
The creature’s smile returned.
"And then?"
"I become what I refused to become."
"A god."
"No."
Auren looked at the countless worlds.
"A prison."
The creature’s expression changed.
For the first time, Auren saw anger.
It rushed forward.
Auren didn’t retreat.
They collided.
The impact shattered the space between worlds.
Auren felt claws tear across his chest.
He struck the creature’s jaw.
It didn’t move.
The creature grabbed his throat.
"You don’t understand what staying means."
Auren’s hands closed around its wrist.
"Then show me."
The creature squeezed.
The world went white.
Auren’s vision blurred.
Then he heard a familiar voice.
"Auren."
His wife’s voice.
Not the false one.
The real one.
He froze.
The creature’s grip loosened.
Again.
"Auren."
The voice came from behind him.
He turned.
She stood in the distance.
Not young.
Not dead.
Not perfect.
Just herself.
The woman he remembered.
The woman who had chosen him.
The woman who had also chosen herself.
Auren’s throat tightened.
The creature whispered beside his ear.
"You know what you want."
Auren stared at her.
"Yes."
"Then take her."
His wife looked at him.
Her expression was sad.
"Auren."
He took one step.
The creature smiled.
Another step.
The worlds around him began to brighten.
The broken city repaired itself.
The dead returned.
The First Tree grew.
Everything he had lost began coming back.
His wife smiled.
"Come home."
Auren stopped.
He looked at the perfect world forming around her.
Then he noticed something.
She wasn’t moving.
She wasn’t breathing.
The leaves of the First Tree weren’t moving either.
Nothing was.
It was perfect.
Too perfect.
Auren’s eyes hardened.
"No."
His wife looked confused.
"What?"
"You wouldn’t ask me to take you."
The creature’s face changed.
Auren continued.
"You’d ask me to choose you."
The woman’s expression cracked.
Auren stepped backward.
"And you wouldn’t let me choose for you."
The perfect world trembled.
His wife smiled.
This time, the smile was almost real.
"Good."
The illusion shattered.
The creature screamed.
The worlds around them exploded outward.
Auren was thrown across the Heart.
He landed beside the boy.
The child was crying.
Not from fear.
From relief.
"You saw through it."
Auren pushed himself up.
"I’ve known her too long."
The boy wiped his face.
"That’s what witnessing means."
Auren looked at him.
"What?"
"You remember the difference between someone and what you want them to be."
Auren glanced back at the creature.
Its face was changing rapidly.
His wife’s face.
His own.
Ethan’s.
Edran’s.
The boy’s.
Faces from worlds he had never seen.
It couldn’t settle on one.
Auren realized why.
"It doesn’t have a face."
The boy nodded.
"It has everyone else’s."
The creature roared.
Its body expanded.
The Heart cracked.
Auren heard a sound beneath the worlds.
Something older than the creature.
Older than the Heart.
Older than the first question.
A door began forming inside the creature’s chest.
Auren stared.
The same small opening appeared.
The seventh symbol on his chest answered.
The boy stepped backward.
"No."
Auren looked at him.
"You know that door."
"Yes."
"What is behind it?"
The boy shook his head.
"Not what."
"Then what?"
"Where."
The door opened.
Auren saw nothing beyond it.
Not darkness.
Not light.
Absence.
A place where neither possibility nor memory had taken shape.
The creature stepped backward toward it.
Auren moved forward.
"You’re going in."
The creature smiled.
"You’re coming with me."
"No."
The creature laughed.
"You always come."
Auren stopped.
Then he smiled.
"Not this time."
He raised his hand.
The seventh symbol opened.
Across every world, people stopped.
Every person who had ever remembered Auren felt something change.
Not a command.
Not control.
An invitation.
Auren spoke.
Not to the worlds.
To the people inside them.
"I won’t choose for you."
The Heart pulsed.
"I won’t save you from every consequence."
Another pulse.
"I won’t decide what your lives should become."
The worlds began responding.
One city chose to rebuild.
A soldier lowered his weapon.
A dying man opened his eyes.
A woman walked away from a throne.
A child took another child’s hand.
A king stepped down.
A prisoner opened a door.
A world that had once chosen perfection finally allowed its sky to change.
The Heart grew brighter.
The creature screamed.
"No!"
Auren looked at it.
"You were feeding on dependence."
The creature recoiled.
"They’re choosing without me."
"Yes."
"You’re losing them."
Auren shook his head.
"No."
The seventh symbol burned.
"They were never mine."
The creature’s body began breaking apart.
Faces separated from it.
Memories flew free.
The false versions of Auren vanished.
His wife’s face remained for one final second.
She smiled.
Then she was gone.
The creature stared at Auren.
Its body was collapsing into the door.
"You think this is freedom?"
Auren stood alone before it.
"No."
The creature laughed weakly.
"Then what is it?"
Auren looked at the worlds.
"I don’t know."
The creature paused.
Then, unexpectedly, it smiled.
"Good."
The door pulled it inward.
Its final words were almost gentle.
"Now you’re finally becoming dangerous."
The creature disappeared.
The door remained.
Auren stared at it.
The boy came beside him.
"Are you going to open it?"
Auren looked at the boy.
"No."
The boy blinked.
"No?"
Auren shook his head.
"I’ve spent too long opening doors because something on the other side wanted me to."
The boy smiled.
"Then what will you do?"
Auren turned away.
"Wait."
The Heart beat.
Once.
Twice.
Then something answered from beyond the unopened door.
Not a voice.
A heartbeat.
Auren’s smile disappeared.
The boy looked toward the door.
"That isn’t yours."
"No."
Another heartbeat.
Boom.
Auren felt every world go silent.
Boom.
The seventh symbol closed.
Boom.
Something on the other side of the door whispered a single word.
Not Auren’s name.
Not the name of the first Witness.
Not the name of any world.
A word Auren had never heard before.
Yet somehow, he understood it.
It meant:
Home.
Auren stared at the door.
For the first time, he wasn’t afraid of what waited beyond it.
He was afraid that whatever waited there believed he belonged to it.
The boy slowly reached for Auren’s hand.
Auren looked down.
The child was trembling.
"Should we run?"
Auren looked at the door.
Then at the worlds.
Then at the boy.
"No."
"Why?"
Auren tightened his grip around the child’s hand.
"Because this time, if something wants to claim us..."
The door began opening by itself.
Auren’s eyes narrowed.
"...it can come out and ask."
The darkness beyond the door moved.
Something stepped forward.
And Auren realized the thing approaching was not another version of himself.
It was the first thing in existence that had never remembered him at all.
