Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Human Shield? Revenge on the Spot

Watching the insects, which had become even more frenzied because of the blood, the female student’s legs gave out.

Her face turned ashen. She clamped a hand over her mouth, tears streaming uncontrollably down her cheeks.

She had been terrified of bugs her entire life, and now, the dense swarm before her was nearly suffocating.

Giant cockroaches, hairy spiders, writhing centipedes... Their rustling crawl was everywhere as they poured from the walls, the ceiling, and the cracks in the floor, making it seem as if the entire room was alive and squirming.

She felt her heart about to leap from her throat, and her vision began to darken.

’I’m really going to pass out.’

’Why was I chosen for this Disaster Game?’

’I want to go home.’

The man in black coldly swept his gaze around the room, his eyes pausing for a moment on the female student, Martin Lewis, and the others.

A flicker of impatience crossed his eyes as he saw how they were reacting.

He no longer wanted to stay here. When he first saw Mission Two, he’d thought he could cooperate with these people.

But after getting a quick measure of them, he realized they were useless. With this group of deadweights dragging him down, they wouldn’t last three hours, let alone three days.

He grunted, his muscles tensing abruptly. His skin took on a metallic sheen, and in the blink of an eye, his entire body had transformed into one of steel.

"If you want to live, figure it out for yourselves."

With that, he violently shouldered open the rickety door and charged out.

Seeing this, Martin Lewis remembered the man’s previous help. He gritted his teeth, knowing he couldn’t hesitate any longer.

He thrust out his hand, activating his Telekinesis. An invisible force seized a giant pouncing cockroach, holding it suspended and struggling in mid-air.

Seizing the opportunity, he bolted, chasing after the man in black.

"Follow him!" he yelled over his shoulder. "He’s clearly an experienced Player!"

The others finally snapped out of it. The female student was no longer faint; she staggered to her feet. The couple scrambled forward, and the man in the suit, swallowing his fear, stumbled after them.

They all understood: staying here meant certain death.

Seraphina Sullivan’s eyes were calm. She was about to make a quick retreat when, in the instant she turned, a forceful shove came from behind!

She stumbled, nearly falling. After quickly steadying herself, she whipped her head around just in time to see the man in the suit brush past her.

A cold sneer played on the man’s lips, his eyes glinting with triumphant malice. He had clearly pushed her on purpose, intending to use her as a shield against the swarm!

"Hmph." Seraphina Sullivan’s eyes turned cold.

That single moment of delay had left her at the very back of the group.

The swarm behind her, as if sensing prey, suddenly intensified its rustling. Countless compound eyes locked onto her, and the sharp, scraping sound of their limbs was enough to make one’s skin crawl.

She was surrounded.

And yet, Seraphina Sullivan wasn’t particularly afraid.

’This is a perfect chance to test my Ability.’

"Sweet Fragrance!"

Seraphina Sullivan suddenly pulled down her mask and blew a puff of pink, fragrant mist toward the nearest part of the swarm.

A dozen or so flying insects at the forefront of the swarm caught a whiff of the pink mist and instantly began to wobble as if drunk.

A single thought formed in Seraphina Sullivan’s mind: ’Protect me!’

The insects that had inhaled the Sweet Fragrance actually turned and began to attack their own kind, tearing at them viciously.

Seraphina Sullivan found it easier to Control creatures of low intelligence like these with her Sweet Fragrance.

But more of the insects were still closing in.

Seraphina Sullivan dodged aside, quickly pulling a bottle of alcohol from her Space. She lit it with a lighter and hurled it at the swarm.

"BOOM!"

Flames instantly engulfed the front rank of insects, filling the air with the sickening stench of burning protein.

Using the opening, Seraphina Sullivan shot toward the door like an arrow.

As for the man in the suit, despite his air of a ’social elite,’ he was pot-bellied and a slow runner. That was why he’d pushed Seraphina Sullivan—to make her a shield. He was simply too slow.

Otherwise, he would have been the one left behind.

Seraphina Sullivan quickly caught up to the man in the suit.

As she passed by him, she suddenly reached out—

"Sleeping Fragrance!"

A wisp of blue mist sprayed precisely onto the man’s face.

"What is this!"

He stared with wide, terrified eyes, and before he could react, his legs went soft and he collapsed to the ground.

An overwhelming drowsiness washed over him, as if he were about to pass out at any moment.

"You..." Before he could finish, his entire body went limp and he crumpled to the ground as if drunk.

"Sleep well," Seraphina Sullivan said, coldly stepping over his body. "With the insects, of course."

Seraphina Sullivan had never claimed to be a good person. Her principle was simple: don’t start trouble, but don’t be afraid of it either.

Since the man in the suit dared to use her as a shield, he had to be prepared for her retaliation.

The man’s bloodcurdling screams echoed from behind her, accompanied by a horrifying, wet chewing sound.

Seraphina Sullivan didn’t even look back. She just walked away.

The others who had escaped earlier were already gone.

Seraphina Sullivan stood on the ruined street and began to carefully survey her surroundings.

The world outside was even more bizarre than it had been indoors.

Under the blood-red sky, the entire city was being devoured by wildly growing plants.

Thick vines snaked around skyscrapers, and giant ferns sprouted from cracks in the asphalt. The air was filled with an Aura of decay.

’Is this an insect apocalypse dungeon or a plant apocalypse dungeon?’ she wondered.

’But the system prompt called this dungeon [The Insect Frenzy], so it must be an insect one.’

She reached out and touched a giant Venus flytrap beside her. The plant instantly snapped open its gaping maw, revealing rows of dense spikes inside.

"AHH!" A piercing female scream echoed from the distance.

Seraphina Sullivan didn’t even bat an eye. Instead, she quickly retrieved the Sound Wave Vibration Gun from her Space.

After she activated its Sound Wave Detection mode, the gun’s display screen lit up.

But the moment she saw the screen, Seraphina Sullivan’s pupils contracted sharply.

The entire screen was covered in a dense cluster of red dots, with almost no empty space.

"My God..." she murmured in disbelief. "There isn’t a single spot without bugs."

The insects weren’t just crawling on the ground; they were lurking in the thick vegetation, and some were even hiding in the sewers right at her feet.

Forcing down the goosebumps rising on her arms, Seraphina Sullivan carefully analyzed the data on the screen. Finally, she found an area where the red dots were relatively sparse.

She headed in that direction without hesitation.

As she passed an abandoned newsstand, Seraphina Sullivan suddenly stopped in her tracks.

The newsstand’s glass was crawling with tiny red spiders. In the center of their webs, a yellowed map was conspicuously stuck to the pane.

"Not bad luck," she said, putting on gloves and carefully peeling off the map.

The map showed the city’s main buildings.

A slight smile played on Seraphina Sullivan’s lips.

’Looks like this dungeon isn’t a complete death trap after all.’

Seraphina Sullivan continued on her way.

’It’s not safe to stay outside for long. I need to find a safe place to use as a Shelter.’
