Chapter 434 | The Masseur’s Prerogative
Chapter 434: 434 | The Masseur’s Prerogative
It began in his palms the way the Tune Up had begun in his chest. Slow first. A bloom of warmth that didn’t burn but settled, heavy and liquid, like he’d dipped both hands into bathwater that was somehow exactly body temperature. The heat traveled. Not fast.
It moved deliberately through the bones of his wrists, through the narrow tendons that ran up his forearms, into the small stabilizer muscles between his fingers that nobody thought about until they stopped working. His knuckles loosened. The joints unlocked in sequence, pinky to thumb, each one releasing some micro-tension he hadn’t known was there.
His hands didn’t hurt. That was the strange part. If anything they felt lighter. Easier. Like every bit of tightness he’d carried from months of wrapping his fists for the heavy bag and gripping barbells until his palms burned and typing essays at two in the morning while his wrists screamed had just drained out through his fingertips and evaporated into the air.
And then the knowledge came.
Not like learning. Like remembering something he’d always known but forgotten. He understood, with a clarity that was almost uncomfortable, the exact architecture of muscle fiber as it laid itself across bone. He knew where the body stored stress.
The tight knots that formed under the shoulder blade when someone spent six months hunched forward over a ring light in a converted closet, back curved, neck bent, holding the same three angles for hours at a time. The specific tension that gathered in the lower back of someone who carried a double life and a dead father and a mother who couldn’t afford one more thing to worry about. He knew pressure.
He knew rhythm.
He knew the difference between the kind of pain that healed tissue and the kind that tore it apart from the inside. He knew the way touch could communicate things that words couldn’t, the way the right amount of force applied to the right place could convince a body to let go of something it had been holding for months.
He knew it the way he knew his own name. The way he knew Chloe’s smile. The way he knew, without checking, that his phone was still face down on the nightstand and the System was watching.
Chloe made a soft sound against his neck. Not a word. Just breath.
Jordan looked down at her.
She was still asleep, but her hand had moved. It had slid from his chest to his stomach, fingers curling loose against the ridges there, and her leg had tightened over his. In her sleep she’d chased something. He didn’t know what. His body, his warmth, the low static of whatever the System had just done to the air in the room.
He set the phone face down on the nightstand.
Okay. Test it. Small test. She’s asleep. She won’t even know.
Which was maybe not the most ethical reasoning, but Jordan had made peace weeks ago with the fact that he was not, on balance, an ethical person. He was a person who was trying, which was a different thing, and trying meant sometimes the trying looked a little sideways.
He moved slow. Slid his arm out from under her head, replaced it with the pillow, and turned onto his side so he was facing her back. Chloe rolled with him, ended up on her stomach, her face turned toward the window, the hem of his black henley riding up to expose the small of her back and the faint crescents his fingers had left on her hips two nights ago.
Jordan put his hand flat between her shoulder blades.
The skill activated on contact.
He felt it happen the way he’d feel a key turn in a lock. The warmth flowed out of his palm and into her, and under his hand he could sense every knot she was carrying, every place where her body had been storing the last six months of running two lives at once.
There was a coil of tension right below her right shoulder blade, the exact spot she’d complained about after long editing sessions. There was a tight band across her lumbar spine where the early pregnancy weight was starting to shift her posture. There was tension in her neck, in her jaw, in the small muscles at the base of her skull where she carried the specific stress of a girl who could never, ever fully relax.
He pressed down. Not hard. His thumb found the knot below her shoulder blade and moved in a slow arc, and the muscle, which should have resisted, which had resisted every time she’d asked him to rub her back before tonight, simply gave.
Chloe moaned.
"Mmmmh..."
The sound came out of her low and long and completely unconscious, dragged up from somewhere she didn’t have access to while awake. Her whole body went slack against the mattress. The tension he’d felt under his hand dissolved, and he felt it dissolve, felt the knot break apart under his thumb and the muscle lengthen and the heat sink down into it like water into dry earth.
Oh.
Oh, that’s what it means.
He worked the arc again, wider this time, tracing the muscle from her spine out toward her shoulder, and Chloe’s breath hitched and released in a shudder that had nothing to do with cold.
"Nnnh... Jordan..." Slurred. Half a word. Still asleep, or somewhere in the gray country between asleep and awake where the body responds and the mind stays dark. Her hips shifted against the mattress. A small, restless roll. "S’good... don’t stop..."
He didn’t stop.
His hands moved down her spine, and he wasn’t following any technique he’d learned from a YouTube video, because there was no video for this. The knowledge steered him. His thumbs found the tight band across her lower back and pressed in on either side of her spine, and the release rolled through her in a wave he could see, her shoulders dropping first and then the small of her back arching up into his hands and then a full-body shiver that pushed a sound out of her that belonged in one of Calypso’s private videos.
"Aah... hah..."
