Chapter 83: The King’s Decree, Serah Comes Knocking

  • Next Chapter

His Essence read 130. Fifty spent on the teleport. He was running low again but he was home.

He walked through the thirteenth level’s corridors toward the apartment. The familiar smell of recycled air and machine oil filled his lungs. The hum of ancient ventilation wrapped around him like a blanket he had forgotten he needed. His boots echoed off the metal floor in a rhythm that felt like a heartbeat.

The apartment door was closed. He opened it quietly.

Martha was awake. She sat up in bed with her hands in front of her face, staring at her own fingers. The grey crystalline patches were gone. Healthy pink skin remained. She flexed her fingers, touched them, tested them with the wonder of someone who had been given back something they thought was lost forever.

Leo was curled beside her, asleep, his charcoal drawings clutched to his chest. The newest drawing on the wall showed a stick figure standing under a pillar of light, but this time the stick figure had a sword and the light was not descending from the sky. It was rising from the ground.

Martha looked up when the door opened. Her eyes found Alvian. Her son in his tattered shirt, cracked sword at his side, bones humming with acid energy that made the air around him taste like rain on metal. She did not look afraid. She looked like a mother who understood that her son had become something she could not follow but would love regardless.

"You did something," she said. Not a question.

Alvian knelt beside the bed. "Yeah."

"Something big."

"Yeah."

Martha reached out and touched his face. Her hand was warm. Healthy. The hand that had been crystallizing for months was now just a hand, soft and real and alive. She cupped his cheek and held him there, her eyes searching his for something he did not know how to name.

"Are you okay?"

He thought about the question. His INT 207 ran the analysis automatically, cold and clinical. Physical status: Essence depleted, otherwise functional. Mental status: exhausted but stable. Emotional status: complicated. He had killed a Duke, fought a Calamity Boss, broken into the Royal Treasury, and fought reality’s immune system. He was sixteen years old and he had done things that most people would never believe.

"I’m okay," he said.

Martha’s hand lingered on his cheek. Her thumb traced the edge of his jaw where a bruise was fading. "I do not know what you have become, Alvian. But I know you are still my son."

He did not have a response for that. He just leaned into her hand and let himself be her son for a moment, in a dark apartment in the Undercity, with his brother sleeping beside them and the thirteenth level humming around them.

The System interface pulsed gently.

[DING!]

[Version 3.0 (Creation Tier) evaluation: ONGOING]

[Condition: One act of creation using dissolution principles]

Alvian closed his eyes. The apartment smelled like home. Martha’s hand was warm. Leo’s breathing was soft and steady. The thirteenth level hummed its familiar song.

What did he want to build?

He did not know yet. But for the first time in weeks, the question felt like a door opening instead of a wall closing.

The Fate Enforcer timer had stopped. The World Will had stepped back. The King was still out there, the political landscape was still fractured, and the future was still uncertain. But right now, in this moment, his mother was alive and his brother was safe and the System was asking him what he wanted to create instead of what he needed to destroy.

That felt like enough. That felt like a start.

He opened his eyes. Martha was smiling at him, tired and real and warm.

"Rest," she said. "You look like you fought the entire world."

He almost laughed. "Something like that."

—

Sleep lasted four hours.

Alvian woke to three sounds hitting at once. His communicator buzzing against the floor where he had dropped it. A knock on the apartment door, sharp and urgent. And Leo’s voice, high and confused, asking "Who is that?" from the corner where he was sitting up with charcoal smudges on his fingers.

Martha was still asleep. Her breathing was clear and even, the sound of healthy lungs doing what healthy lungs did. The sight of it, the sound of it, grounded Alvian in a way that no stat point or Skill evolution ever could.

He grabbed the communicator. The screen was flooded with notifications. Academy alerts. Extranet news feeds. A formal message from the Royal Palace stamped with the Crown’s seal.

He opened the Crown message first.

BY ORDER OF KING ALISTAIR VALDUS, SOVEREIGN OF V AELORIA AND GUARDIAN OF THE REALM.

ALVIAN VANCE IS HEREBY DECLARED AN ENEMY OF THE STATE FOR THE CRIMES OF TREASON, THEFT OF ROYAL PROPERTY, DESTRUCTION OF ROYAL TREASURY WARDS, AND REFUSAL OF ROYAL SUMMONS.

A BOUNTY OF 500,000 CREDITS IS PLACED ON HIS HEAD. ALL GUILDS, ACADEMY PERSONNEL, AND CITIZENS ARE REQUIRED TO REPORT HIS LOCATION TO THE NEAREST ROYAL AUTHORITY. HARBORING OR ASSISTING THE FUGITIVE IS PUNISHABLE BY IMPRISONMENT.

THE KING’S PATIENCE IS EXHAUSTED. SURRENDER OR BE REMOVED.

The knock came again. Three hits, fast and hard. Alvian’s hand moved to his cracked short-sword before his brain caught up. His bones hummed with the Clearwater mutation, the bone-level corrosion responding to his spike in alertness.

He crossed the apartment in three strides. He processed the door, the knock pattern, the Essence signature bleeding through the thin metal. Familiar. B-Rank SunFire, tangled with circuitry wire, wrapped in anxiety and determination.

Serah.

He opened the door.

She stood in the thirteenth level corridor with her circuitry pad clutched to her chest and her silver-trace forearms glowing faint blue from sustained Essence channeling. Her hair was a mess. Her clothes were wrinkled and stained with soot from the Academy tunnels. She looked like she had not slept since the Calamity Rift, and her eyes had the specific intensity of someone who had run out of patience for being patient.

"You absolute bastard," she said, and pushed past him into the apartment.

Alvian closed the door. Leo was staring with wide eyes. Martha stirred in the bed.

Serah’s gaze swept the room in three seconds. She catalogued Martha, cured and sleeping. She catalogued Leo, small and confused. She catalogued Alvian, standing in his tattered shirt with a cracked sword and bones that made the air taste like battery acid.

"I watched you walk into the Rift horde alone," she said, her voice tight. "I watched you catch that thing’s fist. I watched you dissolve its heart. Then you disappeared. No message. No note. Nothing. For hours. I thought you were dead."

"I was busy," Alvian said.

"Busy." She stared at him. "Busy doing what?"

He considered the question. Fighting conceptual entities in an empty wasteland sixty kilometers north of the capital was not something he could explain in a way that would make sense. But Serah was not asking for an explanation. She was asking for acknowledgment. She was asking to be treated like someone who mattered.

"Fighting things I cannot explain," he said. "Things above the physical tier."

Serah’s grip on her circuitry pad tightened. Her knuckles went white. "Above the physical tier. You mean conceptual."

He caught something in her tone. Not a question. A confirmation. She already knew. Or she had theorized.

"How much did your pad record during the Calamity Rift?" he asked.

"Everything." She set the pad on the table. The screen was cracked but functional. "The dimensional energy signatures from the Rift matched your Clearwater resonance at a fundamental level. The same type of energy. The same dissolution properties. The Rift was producing entropy and so were you. You were connected to it. And then the Aura Explosion, the God Roll, that pillar of light. I traced the residual energy trail. It led me here."

She stepped closer. The gap between them shrank to something that felt charged. Her SunFire warmth pressed against his Clearwater chill, the two Talents resonating in the small space, creating a tension that had nothing to do with combat. Her silver-trace forearms glowed brighter. Her breathing was uneven.

"You are not just anomalous anymore, Alvian. You are something the world has never seen. An E-Rank Talent that evolved into conceptual dissolution. A boy who fights reality itself and walks away." Her voice cracked on the last word. She caught herself, swallowed, and pushed forward. "I need to know what you are. I need to understand. Not for research. For me."

The honesty hit harder than any Skill. Serah was not asking for data. She was asking for trust. She was standing in his apartment, in the Undercity, with a bounty on his head and Royal Guards searching every district, and she was asking him to let her in.

Alvian looked at her. The faint blue glow of her circuitry. The soot on her collar. The way her lower lip was slightly chapped from biting it, a habit she had when she was scared but refused to show it.
