Chapter 71: The Ultimatum, The Skill Fusion Catalyst

  • Next Chapter

The guest quarters were beautiful in the way a cage is beautiful.

Silk sheets. Warm air. Soft light. A window looking out over the palace gardens where flowers grew in neat rows and nothing tried to kill you. The walls were paneled in dark wood that smelled like expensive nothing.

Alvian sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the door.

Two Level 55 Royal Knights stood outside. He could hear their breathing through the heavy oak. Steady. Professional. Bored. They had been standing there for three hours already and would stand there for eight more. The King paid well for patience.

He already mapped the room. Essence-dampening crystal hidden behind the wood panels, cutting his Skill output by twenty percent. Anti-teleportation wards on the window, pulsing with a soft blue light he could see through the curtain. Spatial locks embedded in the floor, anchoring the local coordinates so standard teleportation would fail.

The King thought this room was a prison.

The King didn’t know about the System Shop.

[DING!]

[Host is bored.]

[Host is trapped in a luxury room with silk sheets and temperature control.]

[Host has 235,000,000 EXP in the Bank and nothing to spend it on.]

[The System suggests the Host browse the VIP Shop.]

[The System suggests the Host do this before the King’s deadline expires.]

[The System also suggests the Host stop staring at the door. The Knights are not going to open it.]

Alvian closed his eyes and opened the System interface.

The VIP Shop tab glowed gold in his mind. He hadn’t browsed it since purchasing the Fate’s Loaded Dice. The inventory was limited but the items were real. Fate’s Loaded Dice was gone, consumed. The Concept Override Token sat there at 2,000 KP, locked and untouchable. Flesh Limit Permanent Expansion at 1,000 KP, also locked.

His KP was 53. Not enough for the big items.

But EXP was a different currency entirely.

He switched to the EXP Shop tab. A new section he hadn’t explored before. The items here were expensive but they ran on Banked EXP instead of Karma Points.

[EXP SHOP INVENTORY:]

[Minor Skill Evolution Catalyst: 500,000 EXP]

[Skill Fusion Catalyst: 100,000 EXP]

[Weapon Reinforcement Module: 200,000 EXP]

[Essence Pathway Temporary Boost: 1,000,000 EXP]

[Flesh Limit Emergency Expansion: 5,000,000 EXP]

Alvian’s mind locked onto the second item.

Skill Fusion Catalyst. The description expanded in his vision.

[Skill Fusion Catalyst: Allows the Host to fuse two compatible Skills or skill-like abilities into a single, higher-rank Skill. The fusion outcome depends on the Skills’ underlying properties, the Host’s Stats, Talent resonance, and the proficiency multiplier rolled during fusion. Higher multipliers produce more powerful results. Potential for mutation exists at Epic tier and above.]

Fusion. Two Skills into one. Something higher.

His mind raced through the possibilities. He had Abyssal Dissolution Domain. He had Severing Sword Aura. He had Clearwater Palm. He had Clearwater Coating.

But fusion required compatible properties. Two Skills that shared a thematic element. Dissolving space and dissolving matter were both dissolution but the Domain was already S-Rank and fusing it might destabilize the Skill.

He needed something else. Something that solved his actual problem.

The Treasury was below him. Sub-level 3. Three vials of golden medicine that could save Martha’s life. The wards were layered. Physical doors, magical barriers, spatial locks.

His Void Step idea from the Colossus fight returned to him. During the Declan Maddox fight in the tournament, he had developed a spatial tracking ability. Not a formal Skill. Just an instinct born from reading Void Step footprints in his Clearwater-coated floor. He could perceive spatial displacement. He could sense where things were in three-dimensional space by the way they distorted the air.

Clearwater Coating manipulated surface energy. Spatial tracking perceived dimensional displacement. Both were movement-related. Both involved understanding how things existed in space.

’If I fuse them, I might get a movement Skill. Something that lets me move through space. Something that bypasses wards because it doesn’t go through them.’

The fusion would need a high roll. Epic tier or above to produce something S-Rank. Something that could actually breach the Treasury’s defenses.

But the World Will was at CRITICAL. An Epic roll would trigger Fate Enforcers. The System had been very clear about that.

He had 67 hours left. If he burned an Epic roll now, the timer would accelerate. He’d have less time to prepare.

’But without a way into the Treasury, I can’t get the Tears. Without the Tears, Martha dies. If Martha dies, none of the rest matters.’

The math was brutal but simple. He needed the teleportation Skill. He needed it now. The cost was time he didn’t have but the alternative was worse.

He selected the Skill Fusion Catalyst.

[DING!]

[Item: Skill Fusion Catalyst.]

[Cost: 100,000 EXP from Bank.]

[Confirm purchase?]

"Yes."

[Purchase confirmed.]

[EXP Bank: 235,000,000 → 234,900,000.]

[Skill Fusion Catalyst added to inventory.]

[Note: The Catalyst must be used within 24 hours of purchase.]

[Note: The Host needs to select two compatible abilities for fusion.]

[Note: The System will evaluate compatibility and display the fusion interface.]

Alvian allocated 10,000,000 EXP to INT before proceeding. The numbers shifted in his vision.

[EXP Allocation: 10,000,000 EXP.]

[INT: 142 → 192.]

[EXP Bank: 234,900,000 → 224,900,000.]

The increase hit him like a cold splash of water. His thoughts sharpened. The room around him seemed to slow down as his processing speed jumped. He could track the individual dust motes in the air. He could hear the heartbeats of the two Knights outside the door. He could feel the ward frequencies pulsing through the walls and identify each one by its resonance pattern.

INT 192 was a different kind of power. Not strength. Not speed. Just pure, cold calculation running at superhuman speed.

He activated the Skill Fusion Catalyst.

The System interface changed. Two empty slots appeared in his vision, glowing with soft golden light. Below them, a spinning wheel waited. The brass and steel proficiency wheel from Version 2.0.

[Skill Fusion Interface initialized.]

[Slot 1: EMPTY.]

[Slot 2: EMPTY.]

[Please select two compatible abilities for fusion.]

Alvian placed Clearwater Coating in the first slot. The Skill’s data appeared in a small window next to it. E-Rank. Surface energy manipulation. Acid film generation. Corrosive properties. Passive bone integration.

He placed the spatial tracking intuition in the second slot. The System hesitated for a moment, analyzing the ability.

[Ability detected: Unclassified.]

[Source: Combat-developed spatial perception.]

[Properties: Dimensional awareness. Spatial displacement tracking. Movement-related perception.]

[Evaluating compatibility...]

The System processed for three seconds. Then the compatibility rating appeared.

[COMPATIBILITY: HIGH.]

[Clearwater Coating: surface-level energy manipulation.]

[Spatial Tracking: dimensional perception.]

[Shared thematic element: Movement and spatial understanding.]

[Fusion potential: Movement-type Skill.]

[Estimated outcome rank: Dependent on proficiency multiplier roll.]

[Common (1x-10x): D-Rank movement enhancement.]

[Uncommon (11x-100x): C-Rank movement Skill.]

[Rare (101x-1000x): B-Rank movement Skill with dissolution properties.]

[Epic (1001x-5000x): S-Rank teleportation Skill. Bypasses physical and dimensional barriers.]

[God Roll (10000x): Beyond S-Rank. Theoretical only.]

Alvian stared at the probability table.

45% Common. 35% Uncommon. 15% Rare. 4% Epic. 1% God Roll.

Five percent chance of getting what he needed.

’Five percent. I’ve had worse odds. The Fate’s Loaded Dice was a 0.1% chance and I hit it. This is fifty times better.’

But the Fate’s Loaded Dice had been a guaranteed modifier. This was pure chance. No safety net. No re-roll. He’d used the Re-Roll Token weeks ago in the tournament.

He thought about waiting. Building KP. Buying another probability modifier. But that would take days he didn’t have. The King’s deadline was tomorrow. Martha was dying. The Fate Enforcers were coming.

’No more waiting. I’ve been waiting my whole life. Tonight, I roll.’

He looked at the fusion interface. The two slots glowed. The proficiency wheel waited.

His finger hovered over the confirmation prompt.

[WARNING: Epic or above roll will accelerate World Will monitoring.]

[WARNING: Fate Enforcer deployment may trigger ahead of estimated 67-hour window.]

[WARNING: The Host is choosing to gamble with cosmic consequences.]

[The System asks: Are you sure?]

Alvian thought about Martha’s crystalline fingers. About Leo drawing stick figures on the wall. About the sound of her breathing getting thinner every day.

"I’m sure," he said.

His INT 192 calculated the exact moment the guard rotation outside would create maximum sound cover. The Knights changed positions every four hours. The next shift was in eleven minutes. The noise of armored boots on stone would mask any sound the System might make.

He waited. Eleven minutes. The Knights shifted. Boots scraped. Armor clinked.

Alvian pressed the confirmation.

The proficiency wheel began to spin.

The brass and steel wheel ignited.

Three reels of polished metal spun in Alvian’s vision, each one displaying symbols that blurred into streaks of gold and silver. The System’s secondary proficiency engine hummed with mechanical precision. Every symbol that flashed past represented a multiplier tier. Bronze for Common. Silver for Uncommon. Gold for Rare. Prismatic white for Epic. And something beyond white, something that didn’t have a color, for God Roll.

The reels spun faster.
